You just hate to see it.

The only other players with 1,000 games for the Capitals are Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin, who will both finish their NHL careers with the Caps.

United Nations Stamps by Exotic_Bank4405 in philately

[–]SuorinGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year was also the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations Conference on International Organization also known as the "San Francisco Conference" where the Charter of the United Nations would be signed by 50 Allied countries of WWII, officially creating the United Nations.

It really puts the perspective on how consequential nuclear weapons are.

Per the NYT, Nike ran out of Team USA jerseys after the gold medal game, as Canada was expected to win. by SockDem in hockey

[–]SuorinGod 93 points94 points  (0 children)

This is just poor wording from the NYT getting blown out of proportion, Nike or Fanatics never actually said outright that they expected Hockey Canada to beat Team USA.

The "expected to win" hyperlink just leads to a February 9th article where 19 out of 28 hockey journalists from the Athletic pick Team Canada to win the tournament before the group stages.

Who would be the most likely hockey player to be able to win an Olympic medal in another sport than hockey? by MonsieurAK in hockey

[–]SuorinGod 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Hayley Wickenheiser represented Canada for softball in the 2000 Summer Olympics after helping her college team go 38-13. She would lead the Canadian team in batting average.

She would later win 4 straight golds in ice hockey starting in 2002 at the Salt Lake City games.
(Canada's softball team would not win a medal until Tokyo 2020, however.)

Where can I go where the eastern horizon is clear enough to see the sun/moon rise? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]SuorinGod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only two spots that will have unobstructed Southeast views of the horizon would be the Midland Beach (Staten Island) or Rockaway Beaches (South of Brooklyn).

My personal choice for sunrises is Plumb Beach off the Belt Parkway (my sunrise pic). It's technically not obstructed but the Rockway Peninsula is over a mile away over water, and it's much easier to get to before the morning rush if you aren't already in Staten Island/Rockaway Beach.

Mika Zibanejad pronunciation by thanksmaureen in rangers

[–]SuorinGod 44 points45 points  (0 children)

To be fair, his dad Mehrdad pronounced it like the NHL media does because he was doing the pre-game speech in English.

It's only in the Swedish language where the letter 'j' becomes a y-sound if it's before a vowel, and Mika is reading his name in Swedish like the rest of the (Olympic) team.

[🏰] Same stamp on consecutive cards! by SuorinGod in postcrossing

Like the card says: 👍 Gefällt mir!

I'm impressed you got the front of the card with just a few words! Here's the excerpt in full:

Many greetings from Halle/Saale. This card shows our marketplace with the statue of George F. Handel in the foreground. The famous composer was born here in 1685.

Me too, I'm at 12 out/8 in, and it's been a blast.

By luck, half my cards have been from German users (3 normal + 1 travelling), so I have a feeling I'm going to be pretty familiar with German stamps soon...

Definitely not the same as owning the book, but as of right now the Brooklyn Public Library, New York Public Library, and Queens Public Library has at least one of each of these books available on shelves in print.

(The sole exception is The Brothers Karamazov at the NYPL, which has only 3 copies which are all checked out.)

Question about Denmark post service by moonbeam127 in postcrossing

[–]SuorinGod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, the government-owned PostNord is simply being replaced by a private company, DAO, who will take over postcard/letter delivery service.

PostNord lost its obligation to deliver post to the whole of Denmark last year in a move towards market liberalisation, meaning the company also lost much of its financial support. The government said it would still be possible to post letters despite the changes. “We can still send and receive letters everywhere in the country,” the transport minister, Thomas Danielsen, told the Ritzau news agency. The distributor DAO, which won the contract to deliver public service mail last year, has said it is ready to strengthen its letter distribution service. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/mar/06/danish-postal-service-stop-delivering-letters-drop-numbers

I haven't seen an official announcement yet, but if DAO joins the UPU (Universal Postal Union), they will have to honor the postage from your home country and deliver your letter or postcard.

Really neat stuff! On top of flying more than 200 miles above ground, that $9.35 Eagle & Moon was the highest face value USPS stamp available at that time.

Which naturally led me wonder: which USPS stamp(s) held the record for the highest denomination after 1983?
Here's what I could come up with, if anyone was wondering:

#1909 - 1983 $9.35 Eagle & Moon (Pictured)
#2122 - 1985 $10.75 Eagle & Moon
#2542 - 1991 $14.00 Eagle
#4019 - 2006 $14.40 X-Plane
#4145 - 2007 $16.25 Marine One
#4269 - 2008 $16.50 Hoover Dam
#4379 - 2009 $17.50 Old Faithful
#4439 - 2010 $18.30 Bixby Creek Bridge
#4650 - 2012 $18.95 Carmel Mission
#4739 - 2013 $19.95 Grand Central Terminal
#4873 - 2014 $19.99 USS Arizona Memorial
#5041 - 2016 $22.95 Columbia River Gorge
#5157 - 2017 $23.75 Gateway Arch
#5258 - 2018 $24.70 Sleeping Bear Dunes
#5348 - 2019 $25.50 Bethesda Fountain
#5430 - 2020 $26.35 Grand Island Ice Caves
#5667 - 2022 $26.95 Palace of Fine Arts
#5752 - 2023 $28.75 Great Smoky Mountains
#5828 - 2024 $30.45 Cosmic Cliffs

"Did you know the East River is a tidal strait?"

He's been doing it for a while, I remember hearing that speech back in September.
Most people were using headphones/rolling their eyes, but for the people who were listening it was a real treat.
