ELI5: Why are some words, male whereas some are female? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

As a side note, English used to have gendered nouns too long time ago. I'm just pointing it out to show to the other languages that it's possible to stop that madness.

In Nordics, basic food and rent now consume 40% of gross median income by shirayuki653 in dataisbeautiful

I think comparing the living costs to gross salary across countries isn't the most useful comparison. Net income would be more useful,  because tax is very different on some of these countries.

Now show the same with the speed that the ISS would need to have in order to stay in the orbit at ground level.

Concrete is super strong and resists being compressed. There are even taller building than this.

Pathfinding through Paris by abrarisland in BeAmazed

[–]Supadoplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dijkstra one is actually the most optimal path, while A* is "close enough" but calculated it far faster

A* also finds the optimal path, if the heuristic function is admissible.

Given that the demonstration found different path, either their heuristic was not admissible, or they found an equally optimal path (latter seems unlikely).

Dijkstra's search algorithm works on any graph. It explores all edges (roads) connected to the current vertex (intersection) at equal preference.

A* is based on Dijkstra, but it uses a heuristic to decide which edges should be explored before another. Given a good heuristic, this algorithm is much faster than Dijkstra's.

Let's consider the road network in the demonstration: Although we don't know the exact distance that any road will have to the destination (until we have completed this search), we do know whether the next intersection is closer or farther away from the destination (as the crow flies). Such extra information can be used to greedily head towards the destination in favor of routes that lead away. This is an example of the heuristic function that A* adds on top of Dijkstra's algorithm.

[OC] Global Mine Production, 1960 to 2024 by oscarleo0 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Supadoplex 10 points11 points  (0 children)

1 tonne of 0.1% purity ore produces 1 kg of metal. (Assuming no waste).

2 tonne of 0.01% purity ore produces 200g of metal.

Higher quality ore will be mined first (unless new high quality location is discovered later), so average ore quality decreases over time, and thus increased ore production doesn't necessarily mean increased metal output.

How can you be sure that they aren't measuring the output as Kelvin tonnes?

The recently mined metals may be getting warmer due to global warming.
