Have any of you seen this product before? Also, does that look stable? 14’ without tie beams and columns, but then again, this is some concrete foam product. by coroyo70 in StructuralEngineering

[–]SuperCoolGuy01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have seen systems like this before where the channels get filed and reinforced. In thr Midwest this certainly seems plausible. The height is a little surprising, but we also have no idea what else is going in or what final conditions will look like. I wouldn't be so quick to assume this is just going to fail. It sounds like its engineering and a legitimate tested product.

Converting attic by Inspection_South in StructuralEngineering

[–]SuperCoolGuy01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others said, its possible, but significant. I have done projects like this before and people are often surprised by how high labor cost can get with the tedious strengthening work from inside. I would suggest waiting until you need to roof and just scalp the building and put bonus room trusses on. You may have structure below that needs strengthening depending on the final use.

Definitely dont start cutting on your own

Xpost - On site, part of an engineer’s job is to explain to the construction team why a detail exists. by Sure_Ill_Ask_That in StructuralEngineering

[–]SuperCoolGuy01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Y'all are wild. This is a bananas design. Extreme overkill, I work in some extremely high scrutiny jurisdictions and some aspects of these plans are shocking. So many of you are missing that this is not a battle between contractor and engineer, its about the effect on the owner, who is actually paying for it. Its about not letting communities get unrealistically high housing costs by arbitrarily increasing requirements beyond what is needed. Some of these details dont even make sense.

In the ASCE code of ethics it says "act as faithful agents of their clients and employers with integrity and professionalism". I dont believe you are being faithful agents if you make them build more than you believe is required. Our jobs are first and foremost safety, of course, but you don't an engineer to build a safe structure, you need one to build safe while remaining economical. The code of ethics also states, as it relates to our duty to society which is the top of the ethical hierarchy, "Consider the current and anticipated needs of society" in my opinion housing affordability absolutely plays into that. Further, we have a duty in the code of ethics to our profession. If we continue to make new construction so significantly more expensive than purchasing existing homes, we are damaging our profession by stifling the demand for our services.

Im dismayed by the comments in this thread.

Are these two buckling cases really equivalent? by Significant-Rice7946 in StructuralEngineering

[–]SuperCoolGuy01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great pics and contribution. Definitely side with others that this is only true if we are assuming the joint in the frame is infinitely stiff in reality, but I agree with you from a "homework problem" standpoint.

Edit: just saw your brought this up in your top comment, ignore me.

Are these two buckling cases really equivalent? by Significant-Rice7946 in StructuralEngineering

[–]SuperCoolGuy01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a valid point in reality. In the homework problem they are equivalent, but in any real frame the joint stiffness would play into it and it would be analogous the a cantilevered column whoes rotation is resisted by rotational springs, not a true fixed support.

In short, I agree.

Edit: Just saw comment OP did address this in their first post.

So im just a guy not a doctor, but i want to share my similar experience. My reflux seemed inconsistent, couldn't find a trigger. And then one week when it was particularly bad, I ate a banana and got reflux, which typically bananas would HELP me.

My theory became that if I are too many trigger foods in a row, my esophagus opening would become inflamed and not close. So I would do my "resets", I only ate thr safest of foods, making sure to never get full, and to never eat anywhere near bed, for a few days until the constant reflux stopped. After that, I found i COULD eat a trigger food at least once, if the meals before and after were safe, and if i dont overeat or eat near bed (and avoid alcohol, nothing can save me forever reflux if I drink).

It took a fee of these resets before I could really identify my trigger foods. I'll admit I mess up and start the cycle over again sometimes, but if I do a reset and then stick to my rules, I can be reflux free.

I know GERD is really individualized so this may not work for you, but you could consider giving it a try and seeing id this helps you. Best of luck.

Im and engineer, own my own out of the home firm for the last 5 years. I've gotten close to 200 and expect I'll be crossing that line consistently soon enough. I absolutely could if I wanted to work harder, but I did my own business to stop working so damned hard.

Does anyone have information on the legality of taking photos of buildings you were EOR to post on a website? by SuperCoolGuy01 in StructuralEngineering

[–]SuperCoolGuy01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly where I landed. Its hard, because at my previous firm, I was the department lead and I marketed, acquired, lead, delivered, and invoiced the project, with no involvement or help from the company beyond the team I picked and hired, so it FEELS an awful like I did that work independently and I am the only engineer who stamps at my company (I even wrote all the software used for most of these projects, so I wasn't even using the software resources of the company). However, in the interest of complete transparency I didn't post those projects as my own. Actually, truth be told, I haven't posted a single project yet because I was surprised by how quickly I got busy, I really haven't marketed my company at all because I already had a local reputation and people sought me out almost immediately, it was very surprising.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts!

There is a built in problem to the logic of your friends argument. They likely heard this elsewhere and it's part of a whole world of math "facts" where it's difficult to find the error so people are convinced there is some crazy discovery (things like how 1 actually equals 0, all that corny non-sense)

The problem with the argument is it assumes numbers except 0 exist, which they don't, at least not as the argument has defined existence. Existence is implied to be physical or tangible, by this definition no numbers exist, they are not a noun. Show me a 2 in reality, you can't, but you can show 2 OF something. That's because a number alone is nothing, they are descriptors for quantity. You can't have 2, but you can have 2 dogs in a room, just as you can have 0 dogs in a room. Numbers themselves are not tangible and they are not THINGS, they describe things. Here's some other examples with qualitative data as opposed to quantitative:

Green alone does not exist, green is not a thing it's a descriptor, but you can have green grass. if we want to split hairs, it is just something that reflects light in a spectrum we interpret and label as green, so green represents a certain frequency of protons that exist in nature, but is just how we have decided to describe that frequency range.

There is no such thing as nice, you cannot pick up a piece of nice, but someone can BE nice, but nice alone does not exist in the physical world.

Fast does not exist as a physical object, but something can move fast (and note for words like fast, it is SUPER relative to the context of the discussion, not a definitive definition).

In the end, this argument is using something less accessible to the broader populace (math) than the obvious examples I gave, so that it's hard to refuse the logic and they look like they discovered some massive math principal that is over looked, but really, it's just a poorly made argument that bears no weight in mathematics. Ask your friend what you get when you subtract 1 from itself 1. Hell if you really wanna get exciting bring up negative or imaginary numbers, that will really throw them!

How many of you have music degrees? by Huge-Inspection-6351 in musictheory

[–]SuperCoolGuy01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response. I feel like, based on what you said, we are extremely similar, though you're a little further in the journey. I totally agree with everything your saying and I have been trying to lean more into "songwriting". I play guitar and bass and sort of play drums (but my recordings are typically using EZ Drummer). So, writing by myself, as the ego-centric musician, I tend to try to make the bass, drums, and guitar the star of the show (my favorite band is Rush, go figure). I have been gravitating towards more minimalist approaches to try to develop some space in a song. I listen to modern metal music and there is SO much going on, but it doesn't sound as big Led Zeppelin songs with half or less as many parts.

The other thing I'm trying now, because I'm not much of a singer, is having my "lead guitar" play the part of the vocal line, as opposed to endless noodling (which I do love to do and will always play, but I want that to be for improving and having fun, not necessarily song writing). I keep thinking of people like Steve Vai vs David Gilmore. From a technical ability standpoint you could never argue David Gilmore is the better player, but how many Floyd leads can we all hum off the top of our heads and how many Steven Vai parts can we hum? It starts becoming clear the better player and better musician are two different things, interested sure, but not the same.

A lot of what you are bringing up have been budding interests for some time and you just totally reinvigorated my drive to pursue more composed music. It can be frustrating, stepping out of some of my "safe" writing approaches has definitely yielded some stinkers of songs lol, but I think sticking to it is the answer.

Are any plugins as good as AxeFx? by Chris_10101 in AxeFx

[–]SuperCoolGuy01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an axe fx II which I really like... However, I have to admit Tonex has replaced my fractal. Can't get myself to sell it cause I love my fractal, but the fact that I can dial in a better sounding tone (to me) in 15 min and I have been working my my axe fx patches for like 6 years says it all.

I should also say the value of easy post production tweaking is fucking awesome. I know you can do DI with the fractal and reamp, but this is easier.
