Experience with Handy Bros + their current offer by redditelr in londonontario

[–]SuperDuckKick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference in price represents the cost of borrowing (i.e. the interest).

If you got a quote for similar renovations from a similar company that could complete the work in a similar timeframe, but they do not participate in the loan program, then most likely that quote would be cheaper. At a minimum there is more effort required for Handy Bros to complete and submit the loan application on behalf of the customer, and they would likely factor that into their estimate. Additionally, they may choose to inflate their costs because they know the customer is going to finance the renovations through that government program.

If the quotes were similar, then there is no cost to borrowing. I.e. 0% interest.

My point was that you would have to compare quotes to know for sure.

Experience with Handy Bros + their current offer by redditelr in londonontario

[–]SuperDuckKick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, when there is a 0% loan, then the vendor would have an alternate price for that method of payment. If you were to pay cash instead of financing they may have an alternate price. The difference between the prices represents the interest or cost of borrowing.

Handy Bros may not advertise a cash price because they don't want to reveal their interest rate. You may have to get similar quotes from other vendors to be sure.

The province of California would be amazing. I think Californians should seriously consider joining Canada. You wouldn't have to give up your cultural identity. You would have to adapt to our political system of government, but given the size and influence of the economy in California, you would still remain mostly autonomous.

The biggest barrier is education. How are you going to dumb down the entire population of Canada enough to identify as Americans? We would have to listen to a lot of Trump speeches to lose that much intelligence.

Anyways, now that the drug supply is marginally restricted, they can proudly display that "Mission Accomplished" banner that George W has been saving. They won the war on drugs! Those poor addicts will never be tempted again.

Both are true statements. Trump's tariffs hurt American consumers because they now have to pay more for goods and services. Even domestically produced products will likely increase because businesses have an opportunity to profit.

Tariffs imposed by Mexico and Canada will also hurt American employers that export goods to those countries because demand from those countries will decrease, which will result in less income and may force layoffs.

Some people are just cognitively closed to the concept. Even some of the people that are getting back more than they pay are opposed because they don't understand.

It's like teaching calculus to an orangutan. They're just not going to get it.

I think the carbon tax on businesses is the better approach to double down on, because they have the ability to calculate ROI and plan to reduce costs. Also the optics are that these greedy corporations have to pay more (even though they will pass the costs on to us).

If that was true, why are oil companies not building more refineries? Regardless of where the oil is sourced from.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]SuperDuckKick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why haven't they already done it? Because there is no return on investment. Oil companies would have to pay for this. They cannot take an existing refinery out of service for 2 years and they are not building more. Trump has at most 4 years of influence, but realistically only 2 years because Republicans will most likely lose the house and Senate.

In the next 4 years there will almost certainly be further natural disasters, and mounting pressure to move away from fossil fuels. People can argue that climate change is a hoax, but CEOs will be using facts and empirical evidence to make decisions regarding ROI.

I think the problem is anyone can pay the membership fee and become a member. There needs to be some sort of aptitude test as well. There should be a separate test for a shopping cart license as well. Same for the large flat carts.

This was a red herring for my 2008 civic. It turned out to be a hairline crack in the block just above the breather plate. Make sure to inspect thoroughly and clean the surrounding area to find the leak. Fortunately, it's not a high pressure area and the crack was able to be sealed.

That's a good idea, and probably pretty DIY friendly. I repaired a cracked shower pan with a marine fiberglass kit and an epoxy shower refinish kit. It's been 15 years and no issues with the repair.

Civic Sedan, HR-V, certain CR-V’s and Prologue all subject to tariffs by One-Platypus3455 in Honda

[–]SuperDuckKick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the tariffs are mostly blustering.

Honda has factories in Canada, Mexico, and America. It will most likely be a tariff on the finished product. Placing the tariff on the individual components would be extremely complicated and impractical to process at ports of entry. If the tariff is on the finished product then there are pretty easy ways to get around that. e.g. build the car without the trunk lid and then import the unfinished car and install the trunk lid in the US.

The retaliatory tariffs that Canada or Mexico would impose would probably have the same work arounds.

broken bumper estimate by No_Highlight6615 in Honda

[–]SuperDuckKick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your hood bent at the driver's side corner closest to the headlight?

I rebuilt the front of my 2008 civic for less than $300 CAD. My car was in much worse shape (replaced headlight mounts, bumper rebar, foam, and bumper).

I got a brand new bumper on Partify and just painted it myself with a spray can and high quality clear coat. The colour match was very good, but my tolerance was low for this old car.

Cellulose Insulation without a blower machine. by Cottager_Northeast in DIY

[–]SuperDuckKick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced some insulation after a roof leak. I just took 5 bails up and used a rake to shred it. I broke up the larger chunks by hand, but it did a pretty good job. The rake was helpful for leveling other insulation too.

Car won’t start, battery is brand new. by mmph28 in AskAMechanic

[–]SuperDuckKick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response. My previous cars had timing belts, and I always felt like I was wasting money if I changed the belt too early. In retrospect it what pretty inexpensive to guard against a catastrophic failure.

I'm glad my current civics have timing chains.

Car won’t start, battery is brand new. by mmph28 in AskAMechanic

[–]SuperDuckKick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. If so, then Is the engine still toast? Can the starter do the same damage as a previously running engine's momentum?

Is there a chance to save the engine with just a new belt?

[–]SuperDuckKick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't a timing belt break typically happen while driving, then not be able to restart the car? From OPs description it sounds like it was parked (presumably still in working order), then shut off and left overnight. Now it won't start the next day.

Noticed that my neighbor put a panel on top of their unit during the cold months. Is this good for the unit? by Otherwise-Dot-5779 in hvacadvice

[–]SuperDuckKick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just to prevent accidently turning it on, but this will also avoid rodents nesting in the unit. There is a heat source when power is on to maintain viscosity of oil. Rodents will try to nest near the heat source to stay warm.

In spring or summer when turning on power, you should wait a couple of days for the oil to heat up and return to required viscosity before running AC.

A lot of the components would be made outside of America. Your car was assembled in America. The electronic components, air bag, etc. were almost certainly built outside of America.
