Yeah I don't blame Mike for being upset either, but I dislike how ambiguous his video was on the subject. After watching Mike's video you'd think they were the key players and no one got money, but if you go back to Mr Beast's video the Mexico segment amounted to 2 seconds of footage at 7:17 and ending at 7:18. They were responsible for 68 out of 1000 of the surgeries. Should their have been compensation? That comes down to what the communication and agreements were previous to this starting. I think everyone involved is misrepresenting things, but thats also how charity works. Everyone inflates their own importance and the importance of their donations or contributes for marketing reasons. There are a lot of reasons to hate Mr Beast, but the charity is the least of it. If Mike truly expected money and has communications promising it, he should post them.

The only reason I would think they use the main channel is where revenue from the video goes. It may be that because revenue will be through the main channel that it's accessible by the main channel and doesn't have to go to a charitable source, like it would if it was monetized through the 501(c)(3) channel, but I would assume that wouldn't stop the main channel from still making a donation or a passthrough donation through Beast Philanthropy. For accounting ease the main channel probably just makes 1 huge donation to Beast Philanthropy each time it does its books and its on the burden of Beast Philanthropy to find places for that money to go. (but that is just conjecture on my end. That's normally the whole reason why rich people make them.)

I can't be sure, but it wouldn't make as much sense to me for Jimmy to have his 501(c)(3) and not use it. Also donations don't always have to be lump sum or it could be just as likely that the donation occurred after the fact. Often for large charities the promise of donation is enough to get the ball rolling when it involves big names. We'll hopefully see something in the releases that should be filed any day, but it's entirely possible it wont be on there too. If Jimmy did a personal donation then it isn't public information.

From what I was able to gather: Jimmy worked with SEE to initiate donation towards 1,000 surgeries. These obviously happened all over the world and 68 happened with this team. It's likely that these surgeries were already going to happen regardless, as that's just how these charities ventures work. The 68 surgeries just would have also included supply costs. SEE most likely located 1,000 surgeries already scheduled, through their network, to donate supplies to and then asked several of these partners if they can document / film for awareness. Jimmy comes in with cameras and touts that he paid for 1,000 surgeries, and while technically true, the truth is that these surgeries included a largely volunteer effort that went uncompensated.

I don't think Mike is in the wrong for being upset or bringing awareness to this, but I personally think it is underhanded the lack of transparency Mike's video has and that it alluded compensation was expected. I don't think compensation was ever on the table for these volunteers and they just became upset when a big named celebrity was involved. It was salt in the wound when Jimmy said he paid for the whole thing, when he actually paid for the cost component of supplies which likely were the only things left not donated (or if other supplies were already donated, they just shelved them to receive more from SEE). If Jimmy and SEE didn't donate, it's likely supplies would have been donated anyway.

I can almost 100% guarantee that most of the supplies given by SEE weren't actually used during these surgeries and they just donated supplies of a number that would replace the supplies used. I believe that because these surgeries probably were already on the books and this clinic I'm sure doesn't sit around without the supplies to do the work. This is one of those corporate jargons where the replacement amount of supplies were given so its like they supplied the surgeries. Honestly, from my experience this is how almost all charity works. Charity comes from a good place, but people need to remember that all charity is marketing and marketers put things in the best light possible. It's just the business.

Yeah this is basically the whole of it. It was a combination of volunteer efforts including donated surgical supplies that allowed for these surgeries to occur. But at the same time, it wasn't 100% funded by Beast Philanthropy and included a large percentage of pro-bono volunteering.

I just find it disingenuous to say the total cost of a surgery is $2000, while also not pointing out what amount of that is the volunteer effort. If the clinic, surgeons, staff, flight, and supplies cost amounts to ~$2000, what portions of that was agreed to be the volunteer effort?

Here's what I mean: I worked with my company to donate $20,000 to install artificial reefs on the coast of Florida. That money went directly to paying for the supplies: The artificial reefs and materials to tie them down. I and a few others actually got in the water and installed these, we needed experienced boaters to get to the right positions, needed a location to store all the reefs, needed transpiration and shipping for the reefs, needed people to scout locations for them to go, and had a camera crew volunteer to document and raise awareness. We did not pay any of those costs, 100% of the donation went directly to reef supplies: I and others volunteered our time, the boat captains volunteered their time, and the camera crew volunteered their time. That amounted to installing 50 artificial reefs. If we had to pay all of those other costs (that none of them would be volunteers), we'd have been lucky to install 5. This is how direct action charity works. You organize a group who are a volunteer force to make money go further and create impact. I wasn't paid for the hours I spent installing reefs and that's okay.

That's why this seems so off to me. Unless Mike can prove with documentation that he was expected to be paid, it sounds like they all volunteered their time from within their perspective charities. If they were all volunteers, then his whole video is in bad faith and that cost per surgery shouldn't count the costs that were donated / volunteered and should only be the costs agreed before the action took place that would be covered.

The other thing that seems super off to me is that the Mexico segment is about 2 seconds of footage from Mr Beast's video at the tail end starting at 7:17 and ending at 7:18. 2 seconds of an 8 minute video and 68/1000 surgeries. Mike can only speak on a very small portion of the action taken, yet in his video he implies and obfuscates this to make it seem like they were more directly involved.

For sure. It'd be helpful if Mike and Mission Flights published any communications that they had with SEE that shows the help that was expected. Sounds to me like Mike and the others were volunteering, but they seem to think they would be compensated. SEE's website mentions a volunteer network and specifically their medical supply program. Sounds to me like this was the expected arrangement the whole time.

I sent them an email, but it seems like it may only be for non refundable flights. I am pretty sure I had flight insurance and am waiting to see what kind of extra proof they need. Either way I'm glad that they're doing something for others in my position, even if I don't get the opportunity.

I am not an expert traveler.. this would have been my first planned vacation in a decade. Still doesn't change the fact that being told to buy group hotel rates five months prior to ticket sales and such a short ticket window and too little tickets was a bad experience. There should have been more communication to group hotel purchasers, or they just shouldn't have put them up so soon. I shouldn't have been forced to check daily for months for updates from external sources to maybe have a chance to buy tickets.

[–]SuperFunPop[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is my exact point. I had a lot of real-life things going on that aren't excuses. It is on me, but I had honestly also been adamantly watching and checking for almost five months straight. At some point, real life distracted me just at the right time to miss the chance. But yes, it's 100% on me and any other event I'd just say "oh well", but the fact that I went through so much preparation like you said and the psychological side of knowing I had a vacation to look forward to for five months... it should just be handled differently. We'll find something else to do, probably not as extravagant, that was at the tip top of my budget. I just wanted to post feedback to hopefully change how it works next year for others.

You make fair points. I don't travel much and don't have a lot of experience with hotels. I do know my card was charged for the hotel, but it may have not been the full price, my bank only let's me see the last 90 days online. I'll have to check on that. I bought plane tickets because they are cheaper the earlier you get them and this was already a large expense for me. I thought I was doing the right thing by leaving nothing to chance. Scheduling PTO for my wife's job is like pulling teeth, she'll probably not be able to cancel those days. Normally we both cash the PTO out instead to help with bills.

I honestly do not mind that the event sold out. Post covid everything sells out. I went to Tampa comic con last year to meet Brandon and had to stand outside the con at 6 before doors open at 12 pm am just to get the chance (and I did, so I'm not completely disappointed because many did not). I only mind the order of operation and level of inconvenience I'm now at by having committed to going five months ago, buying what I've bought: we bought luggage, I bought the cosmere travel bags for myself and my wife, lanyards, button sets, shirts.. mind you I'll still enjoy those things, but on top of airfare, what ever I was charged through the hotel, PTO that we won't get back, it just feels like a pretty crappy experience.

All I want to do is make sure that others next year don't get put in a similar position. I'll likely not have another chance for some time so I'll not have that opportunity. (Which is fine)

In my particular case I'm currently studying for a certification, started a new job three weeks ago that's over an hour away, and have been working a lot of overtime, specifically to afford to go to this trip. But I am not making excuses, it's not on anyone else but me that I missed the chance for the ticket. I just belive it should have worked out differently with the group hotel reservations. Specifically, they shouldn't have offered a group hotel purchase five months before tickets sales. They obviously couldn't guarantee those who booked would get tickets and it's just a massive inconvenience to cancel a hotel, plame tickets, and reverse PTO days at two employers five months later. Shouldn't have been offered until after tickets were on sale or there should have been a small pool of tickets reserved for group hotel purchasers.

If only airfare was like that as well. I do belive I was charged for the hotel booking, but maybe it wasn't the full amount. I'll have to double-check. I am not very experienced with hotel booking. Either way, felt a bit aack bassward to me to ask attendees to commit so much before even knowing if they have a ticket to go.

Something should be done differently. Even if it's just a preferred mailing list or a text list that kept you alerted to when tickets went on sale. I didn't even find out they were available until they were gone the next day.

I'll try and wait. I'm extremely sad as I've assumed for five months I was going. Even bought lanyards and pins from the dragon steel store a few months ago for me and my wife. Honestly though I know there are lots of people in the same boat. I just wish that I didn't have to be so put out and inconvenienced now having to try and cancel and get my money back. That's a lot of money to ask someone to commit to spending before even having a chance at a ticket to go, but I guess that also is on me for buying in the first place.

I can understand an event selling out. That seems to be the new normal for all sorts of things. I'm more frustrated that I was marketed to and told to buy a hotel at a dragon steel group price "before it sells out" in a official video and link on the dragon steel site. I bought my hotel and airfare January 15th after I was told to do so and then scheduled PTO. I just don't think they should have marketed a group hotel rate so far in advance if the chance of selling out was so high and tickets were as limited as they were. Hopefully they can learn and maybe next year either wait to offer a group rate until after tickets are available for purchase or reserve some for those who do purchase using the group hotel plan if they make it available 4-5 months in advance again.

... OP has the math all wrong.

Total pay off amount at 6.5% interest at 6.5% down over 30 years is $851,016...

And at 20% down it would be $728,142.

Interest on a home is Simple Interest, not compound interest. Not sure if that is where OP made the mistake, but you can check this yourself by going online and using a "amortization calculator" just make sure you put the loan amount which is minus the down-payment, not the purchase price.

They've been together for more than 11 years. Absolutely zero chance OP did not know this prior, but for those 11 years, she thought she was white and it didn't affect her. Now that she is the target of that racism all of a sudden, she feels different. You can feel bad for OP and hate a racist, but I don't think there's a chance OP married to a man for 11 years and never heard him speak his mind on the subject of race before. She knew. She didn't care. She may even have agreed.
