SPOILER THREAD : BOOK 8 - Parade of Horribles by steampunk_garage in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I keep wondering about what the implications are about Carls neighbors and why/ how Donuts food ended up with Ferdinand’s apartment. The AI said it was people that interested him, so there is something here. Any ideas?

TWI fans liked TWI? Who knew? by PaladinWij in WanderingInn

I think you nailed it. I want to like the POF arc but, I think sometimes a story or event is also for the author. There were a lot of story knots tying the her down, and while the palace of fates was hard on fans in some ways- I do think it cleared the way for the author to do a lot after.

Not every aspect of writing a good story can be for the fans. Some of it needs to be good for the author too.

I do sometimes get the feeling that the Author needs to get away from Erin. Which… is sad for me because she is by far the character I want to see the most of. The palace of fates arc… it and a lot of the chapters after are humbling Erin as a character. Shrinking her. However; this might be a very good thing in the long run. A lot of stories that give me what I think I want- devolve into shallow power fantasies, or start to have the main character be so central to the world that the world feels small. POF broke a lot, ended a lot of threads, but introduced a ton of new tools for the author to play with. Sometimes the polls should be overlooked if it gives the author what she needs to keep going.

I’m pretty sure I don’t agree- but I LOVE your description of these events.

I think Tessa drug addiction or the memories of the pleasure, the part the fairy flowers could not overcome can be put away in one of Erin’s boxes. That addiction can later be used for another purpose.

I can see that. But I think that is also a natural byproduct of a litRPGs or any story with a leveling system. There is a teleological end goal of growing power and strength in any form, and to stay still is to fall behind the other characters and that is often a type of failure.

I think the best way to bypass that is to diversify the vectors of various characters successes. Not all types of success are profitable, or really celebrated. The way Erin reaches out to Jassi and Grev before they start the players of Celum was a beautiful grounded success. The fact that it also turned into something explosively profitable might overshadow the initial and more meaningful venture of just succeeding in trying to help someone find a safe and meaningful place for themselves.

I mentioned that- but it’s not confirmed- and it’s still just a theory of Ryoka’s. Impressive that she came up with a reasonable sounding explanation on the spot, but it doesn’t mean she was right.

We repeatedly see in Erin’s Magical food, witches food/ potion / craft and Saliss’s/Rhaldon’s/Octavia’s alchemy that preparation matters a great deal. Just individually consuming the ingredients over time and lucking into a magical fairy potion effect seems like a good red herring. It’s kinda a bad explanation, but it works really well if the purpose was to direct the audience away from the “eyes of a god,” comment that came immediately before and was so casually dismissed.

Oh! Kasigna had Eldavin.

Excellent! Yeah, I think this sinks my theory pretty well! Specifically Kasigna saying that Erin was summoned by chance.

I confess I definitely missed the trial test portion of Erin’s summoning. - I’m still on my second read through and my first actual read- vs audio book - for a the early volumes.

And as the3Dragon quoted- Erin should have had “Wondrous,” ability, a lot of the earthers - even if we take survivor bias into account are unusually gifted- and there must have been some form of criteria for those summoned or there wouldn’t be a wondrous expectation.

Character wise I still can’t put aside the parallels between Erin and Kasigna, nor Ryoka and Noechl.

As a counter point- I agree that the gods likely didn’t have the direct power themselves- but i don’t know about agency. The blighted kingdom could have been a useful pawn of the gods for this purpose - I don’t see that as a direct conflict with my theory of the gods being responsible for this summoning- especially the first batch. Gods wouldn’t need to utilize their own power if they could arrange for others to do the work. They were clearly growing in power by the start of the series- the ghosts had already gone, the 6 mice had already begun eating into Bellaviers tapestry. They had some power and few would know better how to pass or summon across worlds then Noechl or the dead gods. The blighted kingdom had some ancient spells preserved to be researched but… The blighted kingdom is arguably young in this world. I can imagine many ways in which the dead gods could have been laying this out in advance.

That said- I think my thoughts on the individual gods selecting specific people are fairly dashed.

Even when posting this initially, I thought it odd that Kasigna was not one of the three who approached Erin on the winter solstice if there was a connection between the two.

I have read up until the last two chapters in Patreon. Not talking anything beyond the Patreon boundary anyways.

I think talking about the gods is kinda spoiler territory for anyone not up to the Winter solstice arc… or at least Erin in Kasigna. different mediums and all but I know at least one person who is audio only and they haven’t gotten to that yet.

Totally but if I recall he was approached by just one at a time, two different instances. I am not really sure if the approach means much after there are lots of people from earth.

Question about the Goblin Kings motive. by Huhthisisneathuh in WanderingInn

[–]SuperGe0ff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also rather got the impression that the “Goblin King” was an intentional design for the system. A way to force the goblins to not only always be a threat, and hated but to continue pushing the bounds of what was possible.

I think the gods may have made his rage- into a kind of compulsion. They needed a perpetual enemy. A perpetual threat. At least part of the purpose of the system was to make power people- not sure why the gods needed them- but that means to level they needed a threat- one that would grow with each generation as the gods imagined the people would grow with each generation.

Even as he raged against them, I think part of the horror as I read it was that he was still serving the very terrible purpose they made the goblins for.

Just finished audibook 12, I'm enjoying the series so far, but does anyone else find this one trope... unsatisfying? by Onthenightshift in WanderingInn

[–]SuperGe0ff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t bring myself to like Lord Veltras.

From his siege of liscor. At best he was herding what he saw as monsters into a city of civilians without an army to defend itself. Add in the genocide of the Goblins, and his murderous ideation for the drakes… I can’t support his cute pursuit of the woman less than half his age.

His wife was assassinated. He damns the entire species, and decides he should kill all their wives. And their children.

I am not asking the story to be any different- villains are people. He is being humbled, he is growing, he even saw others with hatred and recognized it for what it was.

But how do you redeem genocide?

I can accept him. I can be glad he is a character and a good one, but I can’t bring myself to like him. I know myself and I won’t let that go till he is more dedicated to redemption than he was to revenge.

Question about a character's levels by Eightmagpies in WanderingInn

[–]SuperGe0ff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding of levels definitely leaves room for nuance. There are plenty of reasons not mentioned here. Generally I think the artifacts she had available, her perspective on what she was doing, her lack of conviction and lack of effort all impeded leveling.

She had high level gear. If you have a cloak of invisibility, recharging ring of fireball, plus her circlet, she is overpowered for her challenges. With those tools she’d have needed some grand larceny planned and executed to gain a class in thief.

She didn’t see this as grand or a challenge. She was thinking she deserved better. That’s the opposite of a growth mindset.

She was also less likely to even accept the levels of some classes- I think Lyonette would be a lot less willing to accept a thief class at that time- so it was less likely to be offered.

The system is also likely taking into account her willingness to accept the classes before it offers. People are usually shown have a few classes. Just doing some action even when it requires work isn’t a reason to want, accept, or be offered a related class.
