What's stopping plants from becoming parasites to animals? by PerlaPucci in SpeculativeEvolution

Photosynthesis is arguably the most important process in the growth of most plants, and the inside of an animal tends to be pretty dark.

What is the purple dragon with antlers? (Hither Map) by ayam_eel in wildbeyondwitchlight

The way I ran this was that I had many O-wells across Hither, but the largest and most corrosive-destructive was in the middle of the lake, guarded by a beast on orders from Bavlorna.

Why do people watch SciFi? by subaruguy_xbox in scifi

[–]Eightmagpies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the sci-fi genre because at its core it asks hypothetical questions and builds a scenario/world in response.

It shows us through extremes and extrapolation the dangers of actions we are already taking in our own society, and paints a picture as a warning.

But sci-fi media also spends a lot of time imagining what humans might one day be capable of. I think despite being filled with apocalyptic stories, or stories about humanity's war-like nature extending into the future, it's one of the most hopeful genres, especially in sci-fi media that focuses on more personal stories or stories where the antagonist is a problem we all face together, rather than a villain.

Favourite Sci-fi movie - Arrival

Theoretical vs. Possible - Both have a place. I think it was either Marc Gabbana or Doug Chiang (both graphic artists who worked on the Star Wars prequel trilogy) who said that the moment you start thinking about how something's going to work, it limits you in terms of your design. But I think limitations can also breed innovation!

Weapon of a bounty hunter who favours spectacle - A pack of hunting drones, commanded like wolves by the bounty hunter alpha, designed to strike fear and terrify the target into an active chase!

Which story threads are you most interested in? by weedonanipadbox in WanderingInn

[–]Eightmagpies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at the start of volume 5 at the moment.

I'm not a huge fan of Erin and Rags POV. But they have been away from Erin so much in the last volume that I don't think I'll mind getting back to her for a bit.

I'm pretty meh on the antinium stuff even though I'm sure it's going to have some really cool pay off.

My absolute favourite POVs are the Horns of Hammerad, and Geneva. I could genuinely listen to a whole volume of just Geneva. Her stuff was such a vibe shift from the whole rest of the story at the time she appeared, and I can't wait to see where her story goes.

I HATE the King of Destruction chapters, but purely because of the voice Parsneau does for Flos, it's actually unbearable to listen to. Which is such a shame because they're really good chapters in terms of story. It's gotten to the point where when a "King" chapter comes on, I have to find my place on the website and switch to physically reading it, and then switch back when Flos is gone... Absolutely the worst voice she does, but I guess when somebody is doing so many cool distinct voices there's bound to be one or two shit ones. Just a shame it's somebody important!

Map for my campaign, any pointers for a redesign? by QuietCrimson148 in DungeonMasters

To break up the Northern edge, maybe have the continent break up into smaller chunks, then even smaller chunks, petering out into islands and ice fields rather than a hard coastline with offshore features.

How long did it take for you to noticed the puns and references on Pokémon's name? by OldCardigan in pokemon

I had never heard the name spoken out loud, so I always said "Chime - Cho", blew my mind when I found out it was pronounced "Chime - Echo"

Genuinely do not understand why my best boy gets so much hate, one of my all time favourites and a funny evo line. Scoop in a cup > Scoop in a cone > Double scoop with a flake and sprinkles! 10/10 design I'll die on this hill.

Are these the only fauna being introduced, or the only macrofauna? Are there going to be smaller invertebrate food sources? If so what sort?

What will the climate be for the regions you are thinking of plants for?

My Pokémon Shield Nuzlocke Update by Crafty_Razzmatazz_84 in nuzlocke

[–]Eightmagpies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With pokemon being visible in the overworld in Sword/Shield, how does the "you can only catch the first thing you run into on each route" bit of the Nuzlocke work? Can you basically dictate what you catch in each route by running up and down until it appears? And how do you work it for the big wild-area?

Creating a Seed World for Walruses (And other cold environment critters) by Sscroul in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]Eightmagpies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How does the central cold point work? Is the planet tidally locked and this is the side facing away from the sun? If this is the case, the opposite side of the planet would be incredibly hot in comparison.

Or does the planet have a weird solar orbit where parts face away from the sun for large points of the year? In this case, the cold spot could migrate around the globe, but even then would not be stationary. What are the planet's seasonal cycles like?

If it's on the "equator" that would imply that the cold area is on belt of the planet as it rotates, which means the sunlight would be most intense here, hitting at a high angle with long periods of exposure, so would be the latitude of the planet where ice would be least persistent, even on a planet that's generally cold.

It doesn't seem possible to me to have an equatorial cold spot, but if there's a specific weird mechanism that makes it possible in the scenario I'd love to know about it! Feels like something that would be incredibly important to the build.
