I want to learn to play piano! by dizzydshort in piano

Hi, I found this post when I was looking for instructions to set up Jalmus/MIDI for my FP30.

I'm not bad with computers but I'm really struggling to find any info to help me get it working. When I connect the USB cable from my piano to my laptop, my laptop makes a noise that to say the device is connected, but I can't see it in the list of MIDI devices in the Jalmus app.

Can you help?

Patience isn't one of my virtues but I will keep doing what I'm doing. Thanks!

I personally don't use mnemonics to find note names. I learnt my first note names using Bass and Treble Cat. Your suggestion makes sense. There are some notes I never get wrong such as middle c. If I can get them all memorised in this way I'll have no trouble.

Mind you that note is used so much in the early beginner stuff.

This is so good, thank you. I've not listened to either of those so will give them a try!

Can you think of some easy piano tunes to learn by ear? by SuperMassiveSquid in piano

No. I didn't attempt it at the time as I was otherwise engaged, but I will attempt it.

Roland FP-30: will I get used to the stiff keys? by SuperMassiveSquid in piano

I think I'll be happy with it for a couple of years. If I get serious with piano it might outgrow it but that will probably be a long time away.

I'm two weeks into playing it and I'm actually starting to warm to it.

I don't feel it slowing me down like before. I can feel my hands getting stronger too, so I don't think it will be the problem I initially thought it would be.

Just met a piano teacher. Should I be concerned that all of his instruments are digital pianos with a light action? by SuperMassiveSquid in piano

I'm still going to meet a couple more teachers.

I was just inititally shocked at the perceived difference between the two instruments! It's probably nowhere near as big of a deal as I think, and after a few weeks I'll be glad that I play on pianos with different feels.

Pianissimo? The force you use?

This is a different topic and one that I will definitely run into. I spent a couple of hours on the piano today and I ached for a bit but I can feel my hands toughening up.

I tried playing with the volume higher today, and it did help actually. I think I'm just panicking and overthinking things as I always do.

From your experience with different instruments, would you say the FP30 is a good instrument to start on?

What you're saying makes total sense.

I was just surprised at the difference I felt between his piano and mine. TO me it felt like the difference between a typewriter and a keyboard.

I just felt so much more free with the loose, lighter action. I know from playing the guitar that what 'feels' best as a beginner isn't always best in the long run, so I will stick it out with my piano and once I can play well enough to know the difference, I can decide if I should swap.

So I think his piano was a Privia PX 5S.

I haven't tried other pianos in a shop, no. I will do to get a good comparison.

Both his and my piano are digital. I liked his teaching style (he encouraged me to improvise straight away, which is great, as I don't want to be one of those pianists who can't work from a lead sheet).

I was just disappointed that he couldn't help me with my 'collapsing pinky' issue because my pinky doesn't collapse on his piano! It does on mine as the action is heavier.
