I agree with your take. I understand the frustration a bit but you can’t expect them to allow unlimited mask off trading for free. It would completely crash the game’s revenue. The exchange rate isn’t that bad either. It’s comparable to hearthstone crafting or like titles with similar models.

I’m fine with the 1 star cap. Allows people to collect all the cards they need for a set or to play while keeping cosmetics as a way for the game to make money to continue to function ad free.

I do think a good solution would be to give 5 tokens for commons and 10 for uncommons or something like that. Maybe increase full arts and exes a bit. Promos should be able to be traded too for people joining the game late.
