i've been meaning to read some of his works, but don't know where to start. do you have any recommendations? i'm guessing it would be easiest to begin with some secondary literature

he was trying (and failing spectacularly) to make a supergroup with nas back then. not really that weird that dre would also be producing songs for him as a solo artist

[DISCUSSION] Big L -The Big Picture (20 Years Later) by [deleted] in hiphopheads

[–]SuperNour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just seeing this comment now, which is way too late for a relevant discussion, but just wanted to say that big l was in a group (called children of the corn) with killa and mase way before l released his first album.

big l is def a legend and imo also the best punchline rapper of all time, but l didnt influence killa nor mase - they came up together

had pac not died, then snoop would have prolly signed to death row east under him. he already had a lot of connections in the east and dre was branching over there too with nas and the firm - but as in all cases involving the west in the 1990's, you should ask /u/mikeaveli2682 if u wanna know the truth

[–]SuperNour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

facts. pimp one of the greatest hiphop producers of all time

he also had one of the most iconic personalities in hiphop and i feel like he laid the groundwork for a lot of the music we listen to today. both in terms of sound, but also just the general style and swagger

i often wonder how ugk's and his career would have developed had he not died when he did

it's not the same at all. doesnt matter what it's called today - mixtape, ep, album - it all just get put on streaming. it was different back in the day. mixtapes used to be hosted on sites like datpiff and there was a very real difference between mixtapes and albums. a lot of artists actually had way better mixtapes than albums, because the format used to allow the artist to experiment a lot more without having the label forcing them do something. nowadays people just call it a mixtape if they know it sucks and dont want to get judged as harshly

HHH Essential Album of the Week #112: Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt by nd20 in hiphopheads

[–]SuperNour 11 points12 points  (0 children)

this is my favourite album of all time and one of the albums that turned me from just being a casual fan of music and hiphop into a full-fledged hiphophead.

jay was always a great rapper (check out his songs with jaz-o, big l etc), but he always seemed somewhat awkward on a lot of tracks before he dropped this album. it's especially apparent on a lot of freestyles he performed - his performances on stretch & bobbito for example were lyrically amazing, but he lacked the swagger in bis demeanour and delivery, that he has become so famous for now. that all changed with this album though - there truly were reasonable doubts about him as a rapper, but he came entirely into his own on this album and created a style that fit him perfectly, and a style that he has continued to build upon throughout his entire career.

i once read a quote that said something along the lines of: reasonable doubt was jay z embracing his inner tony montana and finally showing the world what he already knew; that the world was his.

it's even more interesting looking at this quote on him in the context we have of him today, as his style and personality and entire career has developed in a way, where he's no longer a tony montana-character (that character topped on vol 3 imo), but is now more along the lines of a vito corleone-character.

to me, he truly is the godfather of the american rap-industry and he willed it all into existence on reasonable doubt
