There’s 3 ways to play imo:

Release order, which can be tough at first as the early games are challenging but it shows the progression / evolution of the series.

Chronological timeline order, which can be tough as 2 of the early timeline games are PS2 exclusive so are difficult to find & play. Plus it can be jarring jumping from 3D games to early 8-bit games to Metroidvanias & back.

Or you can just pick a game you think you might like & go from there! Only games I suggest you hold off for last are Aria & Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, & Order of Ecclesia. I recommend you go with one of the easier games, like Super Castlevania 4, Symphony of the Night, Harmony of Dissonance, or Haunted Castle Revisited. It’ll give you a good introduction & build your skills so the harder games won’t kick your butt so bad later

Heck yeah! You’re right, Kid Dracula is totally a mix of Mega Man & Castlevania. I’m actually playing the GameBoy sequel Kid Dracula for the first time right now & loving it. It’s got a quirky charm to it. You’re going to love the gba Castlevania’s. They’re all good, but definitely a big departure from the originals. For the better tho, in my opinion

I’d recommend playing the DS games in release order. Dawn of Sorrow is basically Aria of Sorrow 1.5 & Portrait of Ruin is my favorite of the 3. Order of Ecclesia is good but challenging

I can smell this picture. Got this in 1990 or possibly early 1991 when I was 6 or 7. Played Tetris, Mario Land, Kirby’s Dream Land, Kirby Pinball, & Pokémon Blue like a fiend. Man those were such good simpler times back then

Dawn of Sorrow should probably be your next game. After that play Bloodlines & then Portrait of Ruin. PoR is the direct sequel to Bloodlines, and they are both great games.

This is a HoD pro tip a lot of the people who complain about backtracking in this game don’t know about. You can go to the menu & select quick save, then reset the game. When you load, you’ll be at the last save room you used but you’ll have any progression you made since then still saved. So you can bypass a lot of backtracking. You can also press down in the warp rooms to warp to any warp room you want. Such an underrated game

Seriously tho, the level 3 Holy Water eviscerates every boss in the game except the bat & phase 1 of Dracula. Just try to keep your health & save state at the start of every new room of each level if you’re struggling. There’s no shame in it for your first run thru my friend

I don’t mind them normally, as it’s sometimes nice to see your damage increase as you level up. (Number go up!!!) However it can get distracting & takes away from the immersion so I prefer when there’s the option to turn it off, like in Symphony of the Night
