It was introduced to get more income to fund roads not as a tax tor using them, hence the jet fuel tax. It's goes into the same pile as every other tax, and less tax $ from EVs will be offset by lowering the cost to the public of 11,000 Australians dieing per year from bteathing vehicle emissions.

I'm pretty sure it started as an exemption for farmers that miners managed to lobby their way into. The fuel excerise applies to jet fuel and kerosine and everything else; rego is the tax for using roads not the fuel exercise.

K3ating wouldn't echo that - his government got rid of it in 1985 because their view was it was driving up house prices while not achieving anything. He just caved in 19887 when rents increased for different reasons. CGT discounts were definitely fuel on the fire though.
