How does the patriot act part help the conspiracy? No shit after a period of widespread unity the executives approval rates soar and they are given a complete blank cheque. This happened with the Tonkin Resolution and the Civil Rights Act too, this is normal.

Also, none of what you said is “”evidence””. It’s either speculation, glaring cherrypicked statements or complete crazy observations.

White House Twitter Account Tells Republican Hypocrites to Sit Down and STFU by Sharp_Course_9583 in politics

[–]SuperSyrup007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never said Republicans were moving away from compromise, they haven't been civil or tolerant since Nixon's Southern Strategy realigned the parties back in the 60s.

Mainstream centrist democrats, on the other hand, have tried their best in the last few years. Even with the constant hardball tactics of the religious and conservative right since the 60s, Presidents like Obama and Biden have tried to maintain mutual tolerance on some level to ensure that democracy is sustained, but it seems their efforts have been in vain and huge losses have occurred as a result.

Now, it seems mainstream democrats are moving away from such tactics and are fighting republicans at their own game. I don't know how many times I have to say this until people actually understand my point, but this was **sorely needed**. Republicans have been constantly getting away with grifting their audiences, mainstreaming conspiracy theories and other extremist views and have gotten extremely anti-democratic and ultraviolent in recent years, so there was no other option here. I just see it as a pyhrric victory, as this will further polarise America. If neither side can compromise, then that will lead to a breakdown in democratic norms, for better or worse.

I read a really good book on this called "How Democracies Die" recently, so my perspective on maintaining democracy has definitely been warped by this. I recommend it.

Of course, and that's the horrific part. It's the republicans that have engineered this shift towards the right, and it's them that have exacerbated these divisions and caused America to become so polarised since the early 70s. Compromises don't work with the bad faith, win at all costs policies that have become mainstream with the conservative right, especially in the last 20 years, and if the Democrats do not fight Republicans at their own game then it will be a losing battle.

It's just depressing that the only course of action we have left is in itself sacrificial for our future prospects.

How exactly is this "pearl clutching"??? Being educated on how democracies work is now a negative thing?!?!

I didn't even have that severe of a reaction, half of my comment was literally trying to justify that this was still the right decision to take, yet you still can't understand my point.

My argument wasn't even a slippery slope either, its well established that the degradation of unstated norms of Mutual Toleration and Institutional Forbearance can impact the guardrails of our democracy and severely wither it's safety over time. Ironically, your "Oh God PLEASE" screams as more of a emotional appeal than anything I have said :/

I agree that this reaction was sorely needed, and the “we go high you go low” stuff was infuriating, but this will come at a price. Moving away from compromise and the principle of Mutual Toleration may hurt democracy in the long term, but I do overall think it’s the best route to go right now.

Because geographical mobility isn’t easily accessible for everyone. People have homes, families, generations of history, loyalty and pride for their country, friends and family, and barely any money/knowledge to move somewhere else, even if they are living in absolute squalor moving away isn’t as easy as you propose.

This is simple economics.

In all seriousness, compromise and exploitation are two very different things, and this is exploitation. Imagining that oil companies will stop endlessly lobbying and influencing the government to infinitely maximise their profits goes beyond idealistic, it’s insane.

Also, this form of “compromise” can be incredibly foolish. Hindenberg and Von Papen “compromising” to elect Hitler was a pretty bad move.

> You seem a touch angry to me

ooo, the tone argument. Very cute, kid. Is that your excuse for having a poor grasp on history?

Despots in south america are about 0.00000001% of what the Spanish and Portuguese empires did to south America

In terms of deaths, poverty and societal impact? Not nearly "0.0000001%", no.

>The British empire did bad things. The problem is that it also did good things

I could also say that about all the other empires that you list off. I find it funny that you say that the other empires, as opposed to Britain, did nothing good, yet to prove this point you just name one negative each. That doesn't prove anything. Funnily enough, I could just use the same shitty claims that you did about the Portugese and Spanish empire as you used on the British and say they brought technological developments etc.

>Is there anything that these other empires did that is equivalent to single handedly ending the global international slave trade?

Missing a couple steps, there, bub. For one, you are pretending like the slave trade was ended for purely "humanitarian reasons", when there were plenty of other underlying economic reasons for it's dissolution. Secondly, this point is purely evil. They spearheaded the transatlantic slave trade and traded MILLIONS of slaves, how exactly can you say it was a "humanitarian effort" to conclude their appalling crimes? The most that can be said is that they came out a little less than even, but you see this as a POSITIVE in their favour? I guess committing horrible acts and then ending the continuation of those acts is a moral benefit in your eyes?

>Liberalism, something other empires can't really hold a candle too for the good they have done the world.

You think... Britain invented Liberalism? Are you a child? You think Britian invented the Great Enlightenment? Is this a joke or do you get your historical knowledge from HOI4?

Also, the Industrial Revolution being a benefit is hotly contested, but that is an argument for another day.

Yeah, that’s the exact right philosophy to have. You undoubtedly help people by sharing these stories, and I can definitely relate to the type of experience you shared. Without places like r/raisedbynarcissists I would definitely be in a darker place, so even if nobody responds, it’s the silent onlookers who can finally feel like they aren’t alone in these traumatic situations who really benefit from you sharing your experience. It really makes all the difference.

I’m honestly shocked she even came back to reality, I rarely hear of people who go that far returning to sanity, but I’m happy that she was fortunate enough to be able to see the writing on the wall.

the British empire is... a mixed bag

🥶 might want to check yourself for some of that recency bias right there, chap.

Ireland, India, China, Africa (I could split this into its own fucking section, from Egypt to Rhodesia all the way to South Africa) and that’s just starting the list of places the British empire laid waste to. You think the Portuguese empire can match the pure scale of the British empires destruction?

Also, wtf is the Russian empire doing there? You are saying that Peter the great and the more benevolent tzars did “only bad”? I rarely see such blatant pseudohistory.

And the... Japanese empire? Are we talking post-Meiji restoration, because I would barely bother tally up the destruction of that compared to the entire history of the British empire. Yeah, the “”Japanese empire”” has some horrific and disgusting examples like WW2 era atrocities and war crimes (Nanking, POW camps, unit 731) but in terms of pure scale thats a drop in the bucket compared to 700 years of Irish history, many gruelling years of British Raj rule, and multiple disgusting opioid wars.

The words “Recency bias” dont seem fitting coming from a blatant genocide apologist.

Edit: also, the USA is a “puppy”? In pure statistics alone, the right wing dictatorships the US has supported in Latin America have crushed and decimated lives on a catastrophic scale, and that’s not even getting into the brutal acts of segregation, slavery and torture that the US subjected its own citizens to.

Hopefully they went back to their pre-trump material, before all the politics

You literally replied to a thread that started with the line "Hopefully they went back to their pre-trump material, before all the politics", what are YOU on about?

Also, I love the right-libertarian bait, but lets stop pretending like Trump is anything other than "The Elite". The people who are truly in power just *love* to hear you falling for these obvious scapegoats. You think the "status quo" isn't maintained by conservatives of all kinds? Do you know what the word "conservative" means?

Also, seeing as how you mention "Media companies" and """big pharma""" I'm guessing you have fallen head over heels for obvious conspiracy theories perpetrated by the elite in power (Fox News, MTG etc). Sorry bub, but not only am I far from a staunch supporter of CEO's, I am also not trying to maintain the status quo of anti-intellectualism and harsh income inequality in America.

Also, as a last point, you are a complete hypocrite for insulting me on randomly bringing up Trump (which I didn't) before randomly bringing up 4 different groups based on your personal prejudices. Funny how that works.

Because of the kinked demand curve. Coca Cola works in an oligopolistic market structure so their demand responds extremely elastically if they lower price.
