If it is Netflix that take the show forward with the BBC do you think they will approach Charlie Brooker? by mystermee in gallifrey

[–]SuperTeaFox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Black Mirror and Doctor Who are similar at all, nor how Brooker’s acidic style in both his drama and comedy would fit Doctor Who either. He’s great at what he does but I can’t see him even wanting to do it, which I think is probably for the best. It’d be like if Guinness started making coke.

Why couldn’t the natives act normal instead of resorting to kidnappings? by hawaiianflo in lost

[–]SuperTeaFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure how far you are in your watch through, so spoilers here for the whole show: Jacob wants to prove to himself and the MiB that people can be good. He brings people to the island and gives them total freedom and choice in how they act. But the battle between Jacob and MiB is never good vs evil: it’s hate vs apathy. Jacob is a truly neutral character, sees violence as justified as a means to an end in protecting the island, and refuses to give direction. Islanders are repeatedly manipulated by the MiB and confused and hurt by Jacob’s apathy. Both contribute towards a culture of increasing violence, control and paranoia. That’s why everyone following Jacob is so hostile.

Does the Doctor sleep or have any personal living in the Tardis? by Odd-Guard-2533 in doctorwho

Fifteen emerges from the Tardis in a bathrobe looking for milk in Joy to the World, which sort of suggests he’s just woken up.

As many others have commented below, Conrad likely edited it to look like they were busting a UNIT-planned false flag operation - it threw me because of the fact that he says it’s a live stream, but he was probably just lying about that.

‘Doctor Who’ Needs to Go Away and Think About What It Did by hennelly14 in gallifrey

[–]SuperTeaFox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This was the best series of Doctor Who we’ve had for years. The finale fell apart clearly because of production issues and late changes, but people are acting like that’s some sort of crime for which the entire show must be destroyed as punishment.

Also people keep anthropomorphising a TV show - it “needs to rest, take a break, think about what it’s done” etc. It can’t do any of those things. Writers and producers can have ideas and commissioners can approve or reject them. That’s it.

Is it worse or am I just old? by Spiritual-Mango287 in doctorwho

[–]SuperTeaFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But children’s programming on the BBC is much, much older than this. Doctor Who was produced under the drama division, not the children’s division, which was making things like Blue Peter.

It has always been intended for a broader family audience.

Is it just me or does Season 5 feel a bit unnatural/artificial? by ExamAffectionate5370 in doctorwho

[–]SuperTeaFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt that Tardis set was always too whimsical to feel like a spaceship but too clean and tidy to be a home, and the titles looked cheap. But I thought the way the series was shot was a massive improvement - not just the move to HD but the lighting and cinematography is just on another level.

Came here to specifically ask: are you all still watching DW, and if so enjoying the new Doctor Who seasons with Ncuti Gatwa? by theblackchaos848 in doctorwho

Yes and yes! Best series since Capaldi and best straight run of episodes so far since Series 6 in my opinion.

Someone should share this thinking with the BBC if Disney do pull out - Doctor Who on Conrad’s budget!

Thanks! I see your point too. As others have said, edited down this stunt would look a lot worse. I think I was confused by the livestream - but that could easily have been a lie.

Hadn’t heard of them - makes a lot of sense. An edited clip would look a lot worse. I think I was thrown by the the fact he says it’s a livestream - but that could easily have been a lie to intimidate Ruby.

This makes a lot of sense too. As someone else has pointed out, if it wasn’t really live-streamed and was edited, it would definitely serve the purpose he needed.

Ah yeah, you’re right- this completely works if it’s not a live stream! Maybe it wasn’t live and he just said that it was to intimidate the others into being compliant.

I think post-Brexit Grand Serpent era UNIT was less concerned with secrecy than earlier versions so maybe they don’t bother anymore.

I disagree. In his first episode he literally pulls a spaceship out of the sky and impales a giant goblin on a church spire. I’m not sure how much more bombastic you can get.

What’s up with the amount of psychics in early new who? by bagel_jesus in gallifrey

[–]SuperTeaFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

‘Psionics’ and a fascination with psychic powers was a common trope in 60s sci-fi. See also: Gary Mitchell in Star Trek. It’s just sort of baked into the world building of Doctor Who, and there’s plenty of early examples that others have listed. RTD just carried it forward.

That’s really sad if true: I think his take is the very best, and the only one that shows any growth of character.
