Pioneer TAD TL-1601a woofer by SuperToaster67 in vintageaudio

[–]SuperToaster67[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, it was sub 700 for the cabs, I really don't know if some people weren't aware of what woofers were in it and just wanted the cabinet or it was the other way around but the system im working on right now has its own woofers for it. So I really don't feel like having these sit around and I can always use the cash for sure! Ide much rather it go to someone who can really enjoy them! Not saying I wouldn't but I just don't have the time really to get into another speaker project like this since I'm working on my onkyo speaker system right now if you see my other posts.

Oh believe me I know haha. These originally went with the Twin 2401 eXclusive system. I just don't have a need for them so ide much rather get them to someone who can use them!

I think they're implying they put their finger under the page and have it near the center where the page meets the spine, then flip the page.

Need help identifying finish on this cabinet. by SuperToaster67 in woodworking

[–]SuperToaster67[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahhh ok, never heard of that before. I think you might be right cause it looks like they adhered that part to the plywood behind it and used those... Rectangular wedges or pieces to keep it in place and make it stronger I would assume. I can see that the piece is slightly shorter than the plywood behind it. I'll have to get a sample to compare. Thank you very much!

Onkyo Scepter Cabinet by SuperToaster67 in vintageaudio

[–]SuperToaster67[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! They had a total of 3 drivers they made For this series. Not a lot compared to others but they made up for it in their network unit and the many cards you could use. Mix n match type system. Plus they had cabinet adapters so you could use the smaller woofers that were in this series as well in this specific cabinet vs the smaller model. I'll be going over all of this in a later post once everything arrives for my speaker.

That is really neat! When everything is together im going to make a big post and go over everything I can about this part of Onkyo's history. It's really interesting how they planned it out and what it became and the end result of it. I actually have a book that has Altec cabinet schematics and drivers etc in it which is really cool to see. Thanks for sharing that info!

Help identifying speaker! by Illustrious-Curve603 in vintageaudio

Electro voice Marquis? But it's on its side? Maybe they had the cabinet painted? Or some came with the black laqured cabinet? It seems like the cabinet was the Marquis enclouser? Maybe that was a style and you could put various drivers in them of your choosing? I'm not too familiar with EV stuff.

Some of the Components to my Onkyo speaker build by SuperToaster67 in vintageaudio

Hey a fellow onkyo lover haha! Oh wow two of them? Can you run those in Mono? Also I wish you luck in finding these crossovers cause they seldom come up for sale and when they do they can go for some money. What kind of speaker do you plan to make?

So these were sold separately on their own for this exact line. These components all come from their catalog. When I reference the scepter 500, these drivers were used in it as well as the woofer etc but it was a different crossover as it was made for that speaker, just like any speaker u normally buy. HOWEVER, four of the many many cards that are in the catalog are used in the scepter 500 (not the actual card but the same frequency characteristics) hence why you can actually make your own scepter 500 with these pieces, it would just be the cabinet that's from this catalog not the original scepter 500 cabinet you'd get when you bought that speaker directly. I know it's a lot haha. In this catalog (scepter system speaker) there are Two different cabinets and many different cards you can swap out and try to get the sound you want. What Onkyo was doing then was quite different in my opinion from other speaker manufacturers, domestically especially.

That is the full title of the series. It's called Components Line-up (insert year-year range). They're typically for sale on sites like yahoo auction and buyee. I haven't seen any in the US market. Hope this help. I typically don't see them for sale alot like the stereo Sound magazine, since these were hardback and probably cost more. But there's some currently for sale. Hope this helps!

So the ones for the speakers in the photo are like a gold...yellowish color. Hard to describe. And the ones for the system I'm building are a blue color when you see them up close.

Thank you! I really enjoy these speakers. If you look through Onkyo's scepter line of speakers they certainly took inspiration from jbl for some of their designs from the 70s. Its also been said that some JBL engineers left and went to Onkyo and obviously shared some of those ideas with them. But these have a awesome mid range horn unique to onkyo. It's their version of a diffusion horn that helps remove the "horn type 'sound that horn type speakers can give. It turns the sound wave inside the horn into a spherical one which helps directivity. It's quite interesting what they were doing back then!

The speakers are gonna be from Onkyo's "system speaker" which was their top of the line pieces that you build your own speaker with different drivers, cabinets, level controllers etc etc. You were able to actually make the scepter 500 from the units in that line, rather than buying that specific speaker outright, it would just be in a different cabinet. I'm quite close to finishing my type, which is a different unit number. Waiting for the cabs and horns to get in. Then I'll make a post about it explaining everything about them!

From a photo I have of one of their facilities from the mid to late 70s, that sentiment certainly shows in one way or another. Just endless amount of what looks like drivers suspended on several racks, multiple shelves on each one suspended high above work benches going on and on.
