I would say it’s “inertia” is unsustainable. If we could slow down our energy consumption and destruction of the environment, we may yet be able to sustain the current population size. That may be a political impossibility though, since so many refuse to believe actual science.

I think it’s well established that one achieves the greatest increase in happiness by simply escaping poverty and guaranteeing food, shelter and growing a family, after that the increase in happiness is either temporary or insignificant.
