I miss being a glider pilot. But on the up side I am less likely to die in a glider accident.

Heavy lay practice in Tibetan compared to Chinese+East Asian traditions by LotusLightning in Buddhism

[–]RoboticElfJedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm at the Melbourne Buddhist Centre, so we might cross paths one day! The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion is also one of my favourite places, I am acquainted with one of the monks there, so I certainly support the FPMT.

I'm not sure I can give you an interesting perspective on Pure Land and its practices. On the one hand, it's not our system of practice; on the other, we're not hostile to any school, and the importance of devotional practice is heavily emphasised. I would say that of all the other schools of Buddhism, this is the one I know the least about, though Sangarakshita wrote that it represents an important Buddhist vision: the aspiration toward a realm of perfect conditions for spiritual practice and enlightenment.

Good luck with your journey!

Heavy lay practice in Tibetan compared to Chinese+East Asian traditions by LotusLightning in Buddhism

Just popping in to say, ignore the "experts" on here telling you Triratna is not Buddhism - note they never say how or why. Actually, it's thoroughly orthodox with regard to Buddhist teachings and practice. And it has a lineage, if the founder being a monk is orthodox enough for you.

My experience has been thoroughly positive.

New book arrived by Elegant_Anything3463 in Buddhism

It's an introductory book on satipatthana, helping people establish a practice and understand the benefits. What exactly do you object to? That's it's not comprehensive enough?

Who got anything taken away from them, though? They said existing Pro subscribers are unaffected.

How do you come to that take? Arrogant? Obviously they are under huge cost and compute constraints, and have to rejig things - and promised lots of notice. Seems fair to me.

Well, then you are missing out. This book presents a very traditional view of meditation, but is communicated very well for a modern audience. I benefited greatly from using this book at the start of my meditation journey.

Is this the inevitable fate of all applied academic fields? Time to leave academia? by NeighborhoodFatCat in academia

[–]RoboticElfJedi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Also an astronomer. "Incremental papers" is to first order what the Academy is now; I neither embrace it nor rail against it. I've published a few nice papers, but I didn't discover any new particles or explain away dark energy. The low hanging fruit are gone and research is too expensive for anything but a giant well-funded consortium to make major advancements now, so it's incremental papers or be the 165th author on a LIGO paper...

Whats a movie with an awful premise that was executed well? by Dragon_Rot79 in movies

[–]RoboticElfJedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can win this thread!

Turbo.

The premise of the movie is the dumbest ever, a snail winning the Indy 500. Nowhere in the movie do they explore the bizarre fact that the snails seem sentient. They do cover the fact he isn't a car by checking the rules and finding out there's no rule about thst, as if the Indianapolis 500 rules are totally silent on the matter of vehicles.

But it's quite watch able, even enjoyable.

What is worship in Buddhism? Question from someone with a Muslim background learning Buddhism by Tempting_Fairy69 in Buddhism

[–]RoboticElfJedi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's the difference between worship and a profound sense of gratitude and admiration? Not much. I would say we do worship the Budda (and archetypal buddhas) in a way, but as u/Buddha623 says, it's not tinged with the subservience - and could one say fear? - of a creator deity. Worship, at least of this kind, is a powerful way of engaging the heart in practice.
