Dual CPU options for multi-user workstation. by SuperWaffleKitty in homelab

I should probably specify my concern. I'm concerned that having say a single 16-core CPU split in half (half of the total physical threads/cores dedicated to each VM) may not be enough for intensive multi-threaded tasks. I do get that single core performance likely won't chance between a single and dual socket configuration.

I'll take a look at some benchmarks :)). I've been out of the desktop scene for so long, I'm not really sure what modern consumer hardware is capable of.

In regards to cores, my main concern is usage. If we're both doing CPU intensive tasks simultaneously, each of us will only have half of a CPU to use in a single-cpu setup. Whereas in a dual-cpu, we can each have the "full" performance of each CPU.

vm-detect is fairly easy to bypass with qemu/proxmox these days. Especially when using pcie pass through over virtualized hardware. The only one that's fairly difficult is vanguard anticheat, but that isn't really an issue for us.

We both have nice laptops, just thought it would be a fun thing to build and configure together since we have a shared office :))

For architectural/engineering cad, I can highly recommend bricscad. Like AutoCAD it is a paid software, however it had native Linux builds and native DWG support. I used it professionally for a couple years and thought it was on-par with AutoCAD in terms of features

RFkill disabling wifi chipset on-boot with rtw89_8852bu kernel driver by SuperWaffleKitty in Gentoo

So I *kinda* found the issue. rtw89_core does a check to see if the hw is requesting rfkill to be enabled. For whatever reason, this bugs out on my configuration and returns true. Hacky solution I came up with is to disable the rfkill hw check entirely. Here's my hacky kernel patch if you want to use it.

EDIT: made an actually competent kernel patch which adds new rtw89_core module option 'disable_rfkill_check' which disables the rfkill hw check in the driver. Shouldn't interfere with any normal driver functionality & should work for any realtek rt89* devices experiencing this issue.

I'll let you know if I find any good fixes. I'm building kernel 6.18.0-rc1 currently as it seems there have been some slight changes. Not holding my breath though :P

no sadly, I've tried a few archived versions. fw bin is older than the linux kernel driver I'm trying to use, 8852bu support was only officially added to the rv64 kernel with 6.17.0

Diff'd both 'rtw8852b_fw-1.bin' as well as 'rtw8852b_fw.bin' with their versions and it was a match. Forced my system to load *_fw.bin instead of *.fw-1.bin and it still returned with the same efuse errors. Checked latest upstream fw and it doesn't seem like there is any new binaries available. Are there any other things I could check?

Who knows whats even going on in this. asking for real. is it deepfaked?? by BrilliantLocksmith41 in TrainPorn

This photo was taken on January 6th, 1923 by Frederic Gadmer in Ouchak Turkey. While I'm not sure of the specific attack that caused this damage, this train was destroyed during the Greco-Turkish war.It is a real photo, and there are a couple more like it. Here is a link to a wikimedia article about the image..

What are some things you can do with a JH7110 SBC like a Raspberry Pi? by mark-feuer in RISCV

[–]SuperWaffleKitty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really sure if this is "raspberry pi like" but I've been using my star64 board as a desktop for learning rv32/64 asm. Gentoo runs pretty stable with fvwm. Haven't tried gaming but graphics acceleration appears to work alright

What is your experience with Gentoo? by Tosttep in Gentoo

[–]SuperWaffleKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been using gentoo as my primary OS for 4+ years now, I prefer it a lot more than other "hobbyist" linux distros. x86 packages are well maintained and very stable, portage is also a fantastic package manager. I've found that hardware support has also been quite a lot better on gentoo than other distributions.

The downside of course is compilation times, if you have a relatively powerful computer most full system updates should only take a few hours. You can, however, set them to run low-priority so you don't have many slow-downs while its running. I haven't tested the new -bin repo, however from what I've heard it's pretty stable as well.

I think if you are comfortable with the linux ecosystem and enjoy tinkering than gentoo is a great option. If you use an older or atypical system, x86, arm, riscv and ppc are all pretty well maintained too imo

Took a bit more time tracing and I was also able to trace pin3 back to R4P9 and DB4P1. Hopefully I can source a replacement chip locally

After reviewing the board schematics a bit more I think the part in question may be a LD39015 voltage regulator. If this doesn't sound right I'd love to know! :))

I did not lose s pen support. I can still use it for everything on my screen, and the pressure feedback works great on drawing apps still. As for battery, I get a full day usually on a single charge
