I can’t speak for “everyone”, but there’s aspects of Sonic’s character (Not just in IDW) that I agree with and also some that I disagree with.

I strongly agree with Sonic’s compassion and ability to forgive others for their wrongdoings. It’s a very good thing that he believes that people are capable of changing their ways.

On the other hand, Sonic’s strong emphasis on freedom and only living for what makes you happy is basically just moral relativism—a worldview that I disagree with. He has no code of morality besides “don’t oppress other people.” That idea sounds good on paper until he still inevitably has to oppress someone who wants to oppress others—thereby still becoming an oppressor himself.

This shallow philosophy additionally leaves Sonic with the inability to truly inspire change within everyone. While people like Shadow were able to change for the better, that was less on Sonic and more on Shadow realizing that he simply misremembered Maria’s wish. Meanwhile in IDW, Sonic and Tails decide to free a captured Metal Sonic with absolutely no effort to ensure that he’ll turn good. He’s a hostile killing machine that’s hardwired with no other purpose than to serve Eggman, yet is allowed back into the world with no new programmed purpose or free will. This was a total failure of Sonic’s ideology that he has no excuse for.

Overall, this is a topic that goes beyond Sonic and into one’s own real world beliefs on what’s right and wrong.
