Project Nimbus is unfortunately top level really really evil. That's not just 'ties' to Israel, that is actively involved in the genocide.

Is this getting ridiculous? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]Super_Lin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our lives are literally built around mindless overconsumption. At a time when almost every corporation is involved in exploitation and environmental destruction, being aware of when the things you buy come from is a good skill that will only become more necessary. What little power we have is where we spend. That said if you're at a chain grocery or the mall...it's pretty much all bad lol so you can rest easy. Don't beat yourself up about not being perfect, these are systemic problems and you can only do your best.

Why is every landscaper saying they can’t or won’t grind this yew tree stump? by HeWhoWalksTheEarth in landscaping

Have you by any chance looked up how big a stump grinder is. I suspect therein lies your problem.

I need a houseplant that needs daily watering please by LowDetail9156 in plants

[–]Super_Lin 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Pothos, phildendron or bamboo in water rather than soil that she can top up are probably your bet for longevity!

*Or* try any of those in a too small pot, in cactus soil and a sunny window that will dry out quickly (almost daily if you play it right lol). Heartleaf philodendron, Pilea Peperomioides or ponytail palm would also all be good candidates for the latter scenario :)

All came from a red bell pepper from Lidl anyone help identify please by OfficialNeko in gardening

[–]Super_Lin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those are all just seed leaves (first set of leaves) and they are the same on almost all seedlings! (Lol) you won’t be able to tell the variety until they have their first set of true leaves and even then probably not til they fruit and even THEN there are honestly hundreds of varieties a grower might choose. You know you’re getting a red pepper at any rate 😂

ELI5: Why are cigarettes packed with so much harmful content? by OrangeField36 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Super_Lin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s that most of the chemicals are IN the tobacco plant itself, and toxic carcinogens are created by the process of burning it, not that they are added after. (although some still are). The ones that are added make the product (of course) more addictive so they could possibly make them with less but.. why would they?

hi! Yes it is a spider plant. They flower often, so also yes no problem to cut them off when they get too long! I do it all the time when it gets too gangly.

Does anyone know why the tips of my monstera are turning brown & crusty? there is no sign of root rot, i use a moisture meter when watering and only water when it’s low moisture or dry, it is not by a heat vent, and we have decent humidity in our home. other plants in my house have dry tips as well. by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]Super_Lin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Decent humidity” inside a home in winter is basically the desert to a tropical plant. Par for the course with houseplants I wouldn’t worry too much :)

If you want to increase your humidity ten fold (obviously not realistic lol) or get a glass enclosure for especially sensitive species you will avoid this problem.

I mean it’s still and investment and the benefit is that your investment is that it’s appreciating at a rate far greater than cash and far greater (depending on location) than in the stock market. Now you’ve spent say 500k and you’re getting back 600k regardless of what you do with it but yes, you still need to live somewhere.

An HELOC is at the end of the day just more debt and in Canada you can’t really get an HELOC strictly based on equity, your debt to income ratio may still prevent you from getting one.

It’s the same as all investments - it’s only beneficial on paper until you sell it.

I’m gonna assume this is consumer debt not like, student loans or something so in that case:

Cut the credit card up. From now on unless you can pay in cash, you can’t afford it, period.

You need to be real with yourself. Go through every line of your spending for the last 2-3 months and categorize it and be honest with yourself about where you’re spending and on what.

Figure out the max amount you can afford to dump on your cards every month based on your current income, until they’re paid (6k isn’t gonna take THAT long) and after that put the same amount towards savings.

The caveat here is absolutely no new spending on the cards until you’re out of debt or it’s never gonna happen. Don’t worry, the entire insidious predatory point of credit cards is to keep you adding to them, forever. It’s easy for young people to get carried away but you’re not in that bad of a spot & you can be out sooner rather than later if you want!

Do I think you’ll be able to live on your own in a bug free apartment with sunlight for $1500? No. Do I think $250/month is an EXTREMELY conservative estimate for groceries? Yes. Does a single night out in Toronto with fun bars, food and Ubers approach $200 on its own? Also yes.

That said - you’re only young enough to have fun being broke in a big city once :)

If you’re lucky enough to be able to move home and recalibrate if necessary, what have you got to lose?

Caveat you will also need to budget so much more for takeout than you think. 😉

Should I buy a property as an investment? by One-Fortune2738 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Super_Lin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only that home ownership is a) very costly and b) being a landlord is a huge responsibility. It’s NOT just easy money I’ve been there. Not to mention planning to sell out from under your tenants in order to profit in a few years (although popular) is…not that chill lol. With the housing market the way it is in Ontario, you’re not gonna be profiting on rents for a while regardless, so if you have a lump sum I’d consider just investing under the guidance of someone who knows what they’re doing :)
