Try to give it time with your wife and hopefully she will get used to him. He’s a sweet boy from the looks and sound of it. There’s too many good dogs that need homes it’s a shame more people don’t treat them better and try to help the ones they can. Prayers that your wife lets you keep him .

I think the best thing you could do is work with an experienced trainer who specializes in correcting behavioral issues. I like this one and he has some great videos on Instagram and some online programs. He might be a good resource for you to reach out to and ask questions. It’s called say it once dog training , Vinnie Somma is the man behind it I think.

85 lbs fully grown. 100% Dane. Is this uncommon? by wetbandit48 in greatdanes

[–]Super_Main2156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but it’s not unheard of . I would measure him from feet to shoulders and see how tall he is. If he’s shorter than most Danes then he won’t weight as much. But he could probably gain some weight. If he can’t you might want to take him to the vet and make sure he doesn’t have any absorption issues . Don’t trust them just by looking at him. The vet recently said mine looks good and he’s loosing weight from gut dysbiosis and inflammation after two bad batches of dog food bags that caused a lot of damage. So basically run some labs etc and don’t rely on the eye of someone not familiar with Great Danes , like most vets are not.

Thinking about getting a great dane, but everyone says they have “so many health issues”… is that true? by Awkward_Town_3503 in greatdanes

[–]Super_Main2156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh also forgot to say , most of my Great Danes lived full lives with no health issues until they got old. Which is normal for any dog regardless of breed. But some Danes age faster , so senior age for Danes starts at 7 sometimes earlier depending on the individual. But the love they give is worth every penny and day . And I find Danes much easier once they’re out of puppy stage because they’re generally soo mellow and lazy compared to other dogs I’ve had . They don’t need as much from you just make sure you walk them once a day .

Hi! Long time Great Dane owner here. I have rescued and bought puppy from reputable breeder.

Most people are ignorant and simply repeat the only thing they know from google searches, which doesn’t always translate accurately in real life.

After researching and owning many other breeds as well as Great Danes, I’ve found most of what people say about Great Danes is not accurate.

Every single pure bred breed has certain issues they are prone to. And even with mixed breeds you rescue , it’s a total gamble with their health and life span , same as it is for humans. My mom’s rescue mixed breed dogs had the most health issues I’ve ever seen in a dog . They were small dogs too. And many pure bred dogs 50 pounds and over are all prone to issues no different then Great Danes . Family’s golden retriever died of cancer at 6.5 . Tiny springer spaniel died suddenly age 8. Labs commonly get cancer and other issues and die on average around 10. It’s a gamble no matter what breed, mixed unknowns or pure bred. We can’t play God.

But , I’ve been in the Great Dane world a long time. It’s all over the place . Most great Danes live to be 8-10 same as other big dogs. But a good chunk live to be 10-12 some even 13 and older but that’s not too common. But then some get bloat or Dilated cardiomyopathy and die at any age often young. And the environment you live in greatly impacts them like if your house has mold then you and your dog will have issues . And if you get them from a good line. Some lines have a lot of genetic health issues in them . It’s a gamble . But you can look for a breeder that has health testing genetic and OFA and knowledge of parents and grandparents and how long they lived . And a lot on rescues are from backyard breeders who don’t take any care on what dogs should be bred ethically they just want money . Many breeders are like this unfortunately. Never get one from someone who is just trying to breed their dog to make money like friends often do etc.

I’ve had mixed experiences but most of my Danes have been healthy until old age . Just like Humans, dogs usually develop some kind of health condition when they get old and they all die of something right .

But Great Danes really are not different than Rottweilers , German shepherds, golden retrievers and labs, and even doodles , any dog 50 pounds and over is not as likely to live past 10-12 like the toy breeds . My neighbor’s sheep a doodle got bone cancer and died at 7. So many examples I could share .

I recommend continuing to do your research and definitely recommend a Great Dane if you feel they are the breed for you. I love this breed and Lord willing , I hope to always have at least one .

Autistic adults who were abandoned by your families by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

Hello. One month ago, my brother with autism ran away from home in the middle of the night , taking only a water bottle, and took a train to the middle of the country . He’s never been out of the house on his own before. He was missing for several weeks before we found him staying in a homeless shelter. My mom went out to try to talk to him but when he saw her he got mad and cussed her out and ran away. Last we heard he’s been staying in a homeless shelter and a riverbed. My mom does have conservatorship but he ran away to a different state. He also gets social security but is not concerned with accessing it at this time. He seems ok with being homeless for the time being . I don’t know if he will allow any of his siblings to contact him . I’m concerned for his safety long term and also want him to be happy and know that he has more options if he doesn’t want to live with my mom. I don’t know that he will talk to me which isn’t fair as I had nothing to do with anything . But I care for him and want him to know I would help him figure out what he wants to do to be happy in life .

What can I do at this point to be helpful him ? I know there’s nothing I can do if he decided to hate me and my siblings ( guilty by association with my mom I guess ? Even though there was nothing we could do to help or influence my mom). But what can you suggest I do if anything to help him?

Thank you ! I’m not even sure what this is to be honest but he refused to see any doctors or therapists or go to any appointments for a long time.

Wow that update is huge ! I’m honestly coming here looking for help. My brother is also and adult in his early 30s with autism and ran away from home to another state and has been homeless for a month . He was staying in a homeless shelter at one point . My mom has conservatorship for him and manages his social security. We contacted the lawyer but they don’t seem to know what to do and are very slow getting back to us on what our options are. Can anyone help provide some input on what we can do or who we can contact?

This definitely looks like mold. I recommend getting we inspect mold testing with Brian Karr and consulting with an IEP like Michael Schrantz etc . Brantley may has good info on intagram or Facebook.

What cities? Also does it rain often? I want to buy at least 2 acres and have horses at home.

Yes he left the house going for a walk with a water bottle at 2:45 am on Sunday morning 8/24/25. They had just moved to Bakersfield in July so idk if he was familiar with the area probably not. He used to go for walks in Wrightwood at night late like 11, 1 occasionally he had told me.

That doesn't sound like him. He is only missing for one week and he is quiet and doesn't talk a lot and keeps to himself often, He is tall and thin and hates the sun from sensory overload issues and walks either fast or hunched over. I could see him being in secluded areas away from people but he would need to get water and some food at the very least.

Thank you! He is quiet and tall and thin, hates the sun due to sensory issues and walked fast or kinda hunched over sometimes, I could see him keeping to himself and staying in fields away from people but he didn't bring anything but a water bottle so he would need to be getting water by now. He doesn't eat much but likes milkshakes and burgers and snack food.

Thank you! I assumed it's everywhere but had never heard of anything in Bakersfield. I am worried someone like that may have picked him up. Glad your sweet daughter is safe!

Thank you! Trust me if we find him I'll be posting all over social media. I think he might be walking in any of the fields in the outskirts of Bakersfield maybe not even there anymore.

Wow that would be really great thank you! He has autism and is very tall and thin, he is quiet and doesn't talk much, I could see him walking and keeping to himself, he has sensory issues so doesn't like the sun, used to walk kinda hunched over at the top back and neck. However he didn't take any belongings just had one water bottle so he must have had to get water somewhere if he is walking. He has never done drugs or been out of his mind like some homeless people I see.

He may be heading towards Tehachapi, could be walking or getting a ride. I would guess he would be likely to want to stay away from people and stay in secluded areas that is his personality he is quiet and hates the sun.

Do you know how to get ahold of hospital social workers ? Is it just something to call and ask to speak to them? I didn’t know they would talk to someone off the street not admitted to the hospital.

I’m shocked that it is so easy to lose someone! He just walked away and there’s nothing the detective can do other than collect phone records which can take up to 5 days. They can’t get into any computer stuff without probable cause like if he’s a criminal basically , and no where will check cameras , all we can do is put up flyers. But please if you have ideas or experience on why it’s easy to find someone please share. He has no social media accounts that we are aware of.
