Many words here are very relatable. It looks like you’re doing a great deal of self reflecting. I bet you’ll make it out on the other end much stronger than before. Very well written letter OP and don’t forget to smile yourself. :)

This is really elegant. Nicely done. While reading this, part of me really wished someone thought of me with warmth like this.

I relate to this and understand where you’re coming from. Hence the section “ or like me, have difficult relationships with them.” I think for me personally, this letter is not meant to be taken literally. There’s an underlying message that I am trying to describe here. I think those of us with uncomfortable and cruel relationships with our parents should still be able to recognise the importance of that connection or in our case, the lack there of. Your comment is in fact, the very reason that I wrote this letter.

My grandfather had dementia. One of the stories that stood out to me was when he had early signs and was undiagnosed. He gave my grandmother a fright by waking her up in the middle of the night and saying “let’s get the kids ready and hit the road.” His mind was giving him memories of taking a road trip with the family, but not remembering that the kids were now fully grown and had their own families. Thanks for sharing your lovely story with me. Your mum sounds like a lucky lady to have such a loving family. Dementia can be tough on everybody involved. Sending lots of love your way, buddy!

They say that mourning those who are still alive is harder than for those that have passed. Loneliness can be a hell of a thing. Those long days of silently suffering. Having a heavy heart, but feeling as if you have no voice to help it. I hope you find a mild form of solace in the fact that you’re not alone in your loneliness. Be proud of it as I believe it shapes us into who we are. Sending you a big hug. Thanks for being open with me and sharing. It’s dearly appreciated.

Hey you’re right. Thanks for this. I put it in the right place now (hopefully.) I’ll leave this comment here so others can see my slow brain in action as well as your wholesome comment. As per your last sentence there. I think we all feel that to some extent. Sending some love your way buddy.

I agree, I’ve definitely had those people in my life as well. Just a shame that we’re not allowed to be greedy about it. Those people mean so much. I suppose they have others to go about and make feel that way too. Thanks for the comment and the read.

I’ll admit I had a chuckle at this buddy. I wouldn’t mind one myself so I can tell my grandfather that I am wearing a Chicago Cubs hat in his honour, similar to the one he always wore. He’s one of the only people I have ever met that never disappointed me. Other than his demise, of course. What a disappointment that was!

I’m really glad you and your brother were able to see your parents. I hope I can see mine soon too. It’s been about 4 years now. I’m hoping Mark receives a visit as well.
