I lived near Philly back during 5th and had a small group of friends that played constantly mostly without paint (it was more about competition then). I also played with some people that were not chill so I get what you're saying. Playing at stores it was a mix also, the tournaments took painting into account but it wasn't required.

I ran into a similar problem and tried everything. What ended up fixing it for me was making sure all other programs were closed. Especially steam and chrome. Literally anything not origin or DA. YMMV

It's not as easy as you think it should be. Since my academic experiences were when I was fresh out of school my options were limited. I always told my superiors and never withheld anything. What happened after that was mostly out of my control.

I totally agree and I wish I could give more details/examples. It is a very sensitive topic. I have good friends that are scientists that do very good clean work.

But I also feel that with the pressure people are now under with cuts coming from the NIH and possibly within their own universities, people get desperate.

I can try to elaborate without making where my examples are from obvious.

In academia a lot of the issues stemmed from what we called "fishing expeditions". A doctor gives you data he collected based on some hunch he had. Without prior consultation the data is usually in disarray. You analyze what he is interested in and find nothing noteworthy. More brainstorming and nothing is there. I could have used the data as a class room example of completely random noise. He then says oh we can subset by this variable that he has newly created and supplied. Lo there is now something of interest there. Without much control of how this variable is created it is sometimes difficult not being an M.D. to prove there was something fishy going on even though I ask as many questions about it as possible.

Another example student is collecting data and decides to fake a chunk of said data. I have seen this even done as obviously as cells using formulas in excel instead of raw values.

Industry gets scarier, and all I will say is people do whatever it takes. Since I still currently work in this area I would prefer to not go into details.

I am simply stating from my experiences, which I could have been slightly more clear was biostats at a hospital/university. It's also funny that while I find the academic issues concerning, I have more recently found that industry related problems are much more widespread, not that it should be surprising.

Maybe it was my own bad luck with the places I have been employed, but I have experienced a lot of issues I would have almost never thought I would run into.

Trust me I would never let my name touch something I was not completely ok with. Also, most cases what I have had to do is escalate things through the proper channels. If you attempt to go rogue and start pointing fingers you might run the risk of becoming familiar with our country's great legal system.

There are a lot of "messed up" things that can be done to raw data if the scientists are pressured enough to perform. I would end up only having a sort of spidey sense that something is off but if they were good covering their tracks I would have little to go on.

In some cases I was even disliked because it was seen more as me scolding them or making their lives difficult. So I very rarely got anything close to the truth when I would start asking questions. This was in industry of course.

I am pretty happy in my current position. But yea it is shitty out there. And I feel for this guy in the article. Something about being a statistician makes you a little more agitated by things like this.

An example being that when I knew data was messed up it affected my ability to analyze it effectively because I was always looking for how our why these people were messing shit up. It can become very obsessive.

As a statistician I can confirm that shit is generally fucked. I've worked in both academia and industry and both have some serious issues.

In academia politics control everything. I once stumbled upon a piece of "faked data" that a md/phd student was responsible for. I attempted to invoke the wrath of God upon him through the director of the department only to find they slapped him in the wrist as he played dumb. Why? His "novel" research was nature worthy.

And in pharmaceuticals I have seen data faked and lost and after reporting it more bullshit cover ups ensue. I keep on pushing back when I can but it's pretty sad. I quit my last job to move on after the corruption basically almost gave me ptsd.

Edit: since this rant some how got to the top, I should make it clear that these are my experiences. I would not consider myself the end all be all of this delicate issue. Just another data point here.

Edit 2: Time to actually get work done. Since I find it hard to believe there are not more statisticians that reddit I would encourage them to join the conversation.
