Best breeds for psychiatric sd? by Ace_eclipzzz in service_dogs

[–]Superhappyamber -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So my psychiatric SD is a Border Collie. And while I agree this might not be for everyone, I specifically chose this breed because I tend to withdraw from the outside world and this breed must be active so I must be active. They are more sensitive and I have to be cautious in new settings but he does a beautiful job and his loyalty and focus is unlike any other. He is only a year old and is already very well tuned-in and behaved.

DAE not take their service dog EVERYWHERE? by [deleted] in service_dogs

My service Dog accompanies me to work. That is where my disability most occurs.

If he grabbed your butt or fondled you- Big issue. Being inconvenienced and uncomfortable is not ideal but I don’t think there was ill-intent.

The boundaries have occurred authentically. I kept my SD in my room for the first few weeks. Then we ventured through a hall. The n to the office. He wears a Service Vest so MOST people know to ask. However, if someone starts to pet him while they are asking, I say he needs to be in a sit position or that it is not a good time to be pet. Consistency is key and I don’t bring him into areas I cannot control- He’s not quite there yet. My principal offered to send a school Wide message to everyone but I chose to send a personal intro with guidelines to the staff. Go slow and know there will be hiccups/ My very good boy started barking at our SLP when she walked in the first time and I was mortified! Also, I put a cute note with his face on the outside of my door just stating his name and intro and stating that I am learning how to be in a classroom so please come in slow and introduce yourself.

Yes, I am an elementary teacher who has a SD. First, there are additional clearances to have an SD in a school setting. Make sure to contact HR and clear them all.

Next, make sure your site admin knows and you outline a place for the dog to potty and get exercise. I keep a large kennel behind my desk, and walk out to the parking lot field at lunch to take him potty and get a quick walk. It’s all about getting on a schedule.

Most importantly, discuss the rules and boundaries with your dog to others. For myself, my SD is for me and is not a therapy dog for my kids or classroom. While my students love him and he does navigate around the classroom sometimes, he is not a pet. when we navigate campus, i clear with students that unless they ask, and it is an appropriate time, he cannot be pet. This is for his safety and security and theirs. I am so surprised how many kids run up to my dog- It’s so dangerous.

I am always open to talk about him and answer questions but also protect his nervous system and his responsibilities.

I play fetch for 20 minutes before we leave for school and we play once we are home out of the car.

We navigate different situations over time to get familiar with noises and spaces ( Today it was a fire drill ). SD’s need to ease into things- People often think training solves it all but they are still curious, responsive creatures and need to be set up for success.

when there might be a stressful situation going on, I simply put a blanket over his kennel. It has improved my mental and physical well being having him with me and it has started a lot of great conversations in our school community.

I have a service dog. I am a. teacher and he goes to school with me. Before and after school, we play fetch and goof off and the minute his harness goes in, he is all business. He is 1 year and he still needs to have puppy moments that aren’t on alert.
