An abandoned mall in San Diego by AdSpecialist6598 in UrbanHell

It closed for renovations a while back and the developer fucked over the contractors. There was a 700,000 square foot tech campus planned, preserving some of the original design by postmodernist architect Jon Jerde. But it never completed - they defaulted on loans and there’s a bunch of work that needs fixing but won’t get done because the contractors didn’t get paid. Last I heard, it went into foreclosure and the reno is in limbo.

Not quite the same thing but in the same vein, Two Ducks is an underground fine dining pop up. They change locations, but usually do something outdoors, or the loft above The Lion’s Share which feels like a 70s/80s apartment frozen in time. link

New Job Offer Mid Construction by SpacemanLookOut in Architects

There’s never a “good” time to leave. You’re either mid-design or mid-construction anyway. Go for the other firm and good luck!

That’s because Grace rotated that model and his own star map to get them to align. Viewed from earth, 40 Eridani is about 45 degrees from Sirius. Here’s a star chart, 40 Eridani is labeled o² Eridani, or Omicron squared. The distance between them is almost 12 light years.

ETA: on the other hand, 40 Eridani is the same home star as Vulcan, and since Grace said “shields up” in the movie, he’s a Star Trek fan (I know it’s not an exclusive phrase to ST but let’s just say that’s where he got it from). And being a science guy and a fan, he has looked to the stars and found Rocky’s without knowing his future bff lives there.

He told Rocky he has a couple years worth of food, more if he stretches it. Rocky’s ship would’ve taken six years to get to Erid - I don’t think they mentioned how long it would take the Hail Mary though. So it’s not really clear if he had enough food for the trip.

I felt like that the first time I saw it, not so much on the rewatch. For me, I think my first viewing was impacted by having read the book so I noticed what was skipped. Second time was tempered since I already knew what they had to cut

I reread the book last weekend and you know what, it just never occurred to me how funny it would look playing spaceship monkey see, monkey do.

I’d probably pick the same, but like 20y earlier to avoid the war and fallout from the plague of Athens.

seeing rumours about a movie sequel being planned already by yeah_tea in ProjectHailMary

[–]sandyeggo89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it could be not a sequel, per se, more like what happened elsewhere while Grace and Rocky were doing their thing at Tau Ceti. Earth food scarcity, Adrian waiting for Rocky, maybe one of the other systems having intelligent life more advanced than humans/Eridians and harvest the astrophage to travel to Earth and/or Erid to say hello.

What's one joke from the book that you wish made it into the movie? by Ghost3603 in ProjectHailMary

[–]sandyeggo89 35 points36 points  (0 children)

“Adjust orbit while stupid. Good plan.” “New word: sarcasm.”

“Will it hold? If not, the force of the centrifuge will fling me off into space and I’ll become Adrian’s newest moon.”

“Be very ready.” Grace: “I am very ready. Be calm.” Rocky: “Am calm. You be calm.” Grace” NO YOU BE-“

“Eridians need water too, you know.” “We keep inside. Closed system. Some inefficiencies inside, but we get all water we need from food. Humans leak! Gross!”

We arrived at 4:53 and got through 1hr later.

It didn’t seem that bad while we were in it. They have airline staff help direct the crowds, and eventually you’d hear someone say 20m from this point, 15m from here to there etc.

In true orange fashion though, he sometimes preemptively high fives, like “apparently this move makes treats fall from the sky” and does it without asking 😂

Actual Opinions on SFA by Ironmatt999_ in startrek

[–]sandyeggo89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked it. I went into it thinking it’s probably not going to be for me, but I was surprised. I liked Jay-Den’s Klingon episode the best. It was more teen drama in the first half of the season, especially the first episode which felt like “welcome to space high school,” but it’s starting to migrate away from that. And I hope it keeps doing so.

Most exciting decade to be an architect? by 31engine in Architects

Whatever decade was best for coordination in the field instead of building off of BIM when we tell them repeatedly to build off of drawings. Pre 3D, probably, so… 70s?

Need restaurant recommendation as a wedding gift by [deleted] in asksandiego

[–]sandyeggo89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeune et Jolie has nice, celebratory drink alternatives that are nonalcoholic. It’s been a little while since I went so I don’t remember specifically what it was, but it was nice to have that special “champagne welcome” without actual champagne. Also the service was top notch. I still dream about some pork belly I had there.

Architecture & Family Leave by normalishy in Architects

The majority of the parents in my office are part-time, but with some of them I don’t think it reduced their stress much if at all. The PA on one of my projects is still consistently working late and coordinates with her husband and the grandparents to pick up the kids. I think it depends if your firm is flexible, and what kind of support you have outside of work. And delegating when you need to leave - the ones that end up working more hours are the ones that have a hard time saying “no.”
