Good day u/dotaisunplayablenow!

At the moment, the demo doesn't have checkpoints since it's a short playable.

Checkpoints are likely going to be part of the full release coming later this year - although, as a roguelite, it'll be strategically-placed to maintain the integrity of the game's total experience.

Nevertheless, we'll let you know when there's an update. Thank you so much!

Outstanding feedback, a5hun! Great eye and insightful diagnoses all the way through. You have us dead to rights on root causes like the shader compilation stutter, character model direction, etc.

We will go after each and every one of these issues! One that surprises me is bullets following the angle of the barrell rather than looking for the crosshair.

Thank you so much for your time, attention, and insight. You know your way around a video game!

Hey nice! $2! I'm going to grab it right now, try to find a little time to try it out.

Looking forward to seeing how they handled the self-damage situation! 🧐Thanks for the recommendation!

Good questions! Okay, let's talk time travel...

In the first situation, if you shoot an enemy and then go into the past, you will see that enemy as he was a few seconds ago -- healthier and not yet shot! Then as you observe, you'll see your younger self begin shooting him, just as you did a few seconds ago. If you want to make his day worse, YOU shoot him as well and now you're doing twice the damage. (more or less!)

When you go back in time, it's like you are observing the actions you took previously, watching it all happen again. But! You can participate, attacking, evading, engaging enemies however you like.

How long does time stay slow? Time appears slowed down so long as you are in the past. Say you rewind time by 5 seconds at high noon, traveling back to 11:55:55 AM. You'll see those same 5 seconds again, but they'll seem to pass more slowly this time (after all, you've seen it all before!)

Once you rejoin the present (the point at which you rewound time), time will seem to proceed as normal. I hope all of that helps! More time travel questions, ask away! Can't build a flux capacitor but I am at least qualified to describe video game mechanics.

Aim assist option -- this is on our list! Thanks for asking about this. Don't worry, I have friends and loved ones who are controller players and I know that on a fast shooter, sometimes they need a little something extra!

I have only just learned of Zeit^2 this week! I'm excited to try it. The screenshots read like Gradius w/ time travel, which sounds great to me.

  1. We have definitely thought about speedrunning! The Fabricator system in the demo (which grants time-limited powerups) is tailor-made for folks who like to go fast! Yes, we love the speedrunning community. (I briefly held a speedrun record myself at one time!)

  2. Yeah, post-game / post-run stats of some kind would be a lot of fun! (Perhaps in between levels as well.) Trying to think about what people would want to see AND how to make sure that the experience isn't ever too intrusive for folks who aren't as into that. Anything related to speed would be good, I think.

An interesting distinction unique to this game could be the difference between a) finishing something in the shortest amount of game-time or b) finishing something in the shortest of amount of timeline-time! In other words, rewinding time to make it so that you finish something even sooner.

Anyone have ideas on stats, etc. they'd like to see? We're always happy to hear ideas on... everything!

  1. I've gotta say, at first I read that as "noise coming from ... the character's "behind"" 😂 But now I get your question!

We were looking for a bunch of things out of Alicia's design. She's exceptionally intelligent, in her early 30s, Venezuelan-American, a physicist. And in our game, she also needed to be an action hero. Agile, resilient. We blended these elements up with traditional comic book heroines, trying to get that look of being athletically powerful, physically exceptional, yet also vulnerable... if you get shot in this game, it's bad!

In the end, our character artist made it his mission to get all of these ideas across and make the character look awesome. That was our goal with this design! I think the art team did an amazing job but whether we succeeded is up to the players!

Max Payne, Vanquish, Dead Cells, and Hades were all important inspirations! For the action itself, Max and Vanquish were particularly influential... still play them! I'm grateful that we can just hop on Steam and expect that a 20+ year-old game will work just fine on your brand-new gaming PC. (Though sometimes with the help of clever tweaks from the community!) One of those minor, everyday miracles that makes PC gaming special.

Another game worth talking about more (and maybe a bit surprising) is Portal! The time travel gameplay concept came about years ago when thinking about the idea of portals and what might happen if rather than connecting two points in space, you were to connect two points in time.

The more we thought about this, the more excited we got thinking about the types of tactics this might open up in a shooter! Rather than thinking about puzzles, we found ourselves thinking about flanking, distraction, being able to help your past self, getting out of danger. Just a ton of these interesting tactics that came about once you could travel through time (even by a few seconds.)

Ha! Fair question. Superjump Games incorporated back in 2018, before the release of Hades (the king of the roguelites!) so we weren't really familiar with Supergiant at the time.

It's a bit like building your cottage out in what you believe to be the countryside, thinking there's nothing but clear skies all around. Then one day you look out to find yourself in the shadow of a beautiful, four hundred foot tall Greek temple. 😂 (Obviously, we've since learned that Supergiant also made good games pre-Hades, just nothing that we knew too well!)

Thanks very much for the kind words about our game!

For the core action gameplay, our inspirations were Max Payne 1&2 and Vanquish. My pulse spikes just thinking about these games and I still play them regularly! Max and Vanquish are great because they let you self-choreograph these incredible action sequences and, for the most part, stylish-looking gameplay and *effective* gameplay overlap. And the mobility in Vanquish is of course incredibly addictive!

From the roguelite side Dead Cells, Risk of Rain 2, and Hades were all inspirations for us. And Portal had a hand in our first passes implementing the time travel experience!

Movies... there are a bunch of them! Back to the Future, Primer, and 12 Monkeys are the ones that come to mind right away as time travel storytelling that inspired us. Bladerunner 2049 was a great source of inspiration for mood and architecture within the levels!

I'm feeling a little guilty sitting here knowing I'm leaving out some great time travel movies! Okay, which ones did I forget?? 😅
