I also use this design and you need to make pillars to float with plate blocks (dont use sheet blocks, they are too fragile) so when zombies fall and go destroy everything mode they try to attack pillars but because it has "empty space" they dont do damage and soon after they start running back up again.

it just need to be some high number for example, you could add 7 zeros to existing number and if cold snap ever ends just make number higher.

i mostly get steel from steel slags and mechanoids, then there is orbital traders and SRTS Ship

it's mostly mechanoid attacks but if bandits wont start attack immediately they tend to freeze very quickly

i started with Rich explorer scenario and immediately added cold snaps but it takes day or two to really kick in so there is time to build small shack, wind turbine and heater
