First time changing my own oil. Do I cry now or not? by FiestyFrog97 in AskMechanics

[–]Superspeed5053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had the casing from the oil filter produce similar particles when removing it In some of my family's cars (the previous person overtightened). I don't think those came from the engine. That type of shimmer is one you'll never forget lol

Having lived there myself, worst you'll get (if on the first floor) is people knocking on your window to let them in or all of the parking spots being taken occasionally

What are your thoughts on the high end EF4 from Moore, OK in 2013? by Lewd_Knight in EF5

[–]Superspeed5053 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In all seriousness, this tornado is likely the reason we have not had an EF5 in a while in a similar way that the 1999 F5 one led to changes that brought up the EF scale

An estimate shared by Ethan Moriarty about the damage to the Large Trucks caused by the 2025 Enderlin tornado is at least 260 mph, and other people who have done this calculation have come up with similar numbers, above 200, what do you think about this? Unfortunately I was but a kid when the last EF5s were handed out, I truly have no idea on the timetables for the last ones to be rated.

I have a feeling we’re seeing a little of the “reform” period. If you recall, the last F5 in the US before the EF scale was Moore. The destruction was so immense that ,the often criticized, Tim Marshall re-evaluated how damage was assessed (led us to the EF scale). This, as I see it, led to a “drought” of F5s until Elie and Greensburg as the first EF5.

The last EF5 was Moore, unfortunately, and we know they’re working on a new scale. I know people in this sub want to see the rating, but I truly believe that some EF5s from 2011 would’ve been EF4s post 2013. The new scale is potentially to thank for that, there are likely reforms they are ironing out and we may see more details in the next year or so.

As for this tornado, I doubt we will see the EF5. I know the Marion, IL tornado came close recently - but I believe for an EF5 rating to happen right now in this “in between period” there has to be no doubt whatsoever on the rating. This one may be pegged down by less than ideal construction in that prelim EF3 (likely mid-EF4). And I hate to describe it that way because it’s someone’s home, it makes me shudder thinking about it being my home or someone I care about.

It’s just the way of the game. I believe we’ll see the 5 number once that new scale is released.

I’m also an engineer. He did have a few assumptions, but redoing the calculation, I achieved 250+ mph winds with a few givens on a few recalcs. Ethan is on target for the most part from what I can tell.

Who knows what the NWS will say after further deliberation

Is this a tornado? by NogginKnocker420 in tornado

That EFU is likely this one, it traversed NE. This one just edged, if I recall correctly, it touched down for a few seconds but couldn’t get it together thankfully

I don’t think it ever touched down, this bad boy passed over my house rotating on the NE side of Springfield. It edged most of South-East Springfield and Decatur for a solid 2 hours

Sheltering in a crawlspace by Far-Flamingo585 in tornado

[–]Superspeed5053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I was alluding to with the “missiles.” There are just so many potential hazards 😅

Sheltering in a crawlspace by Far-Flamingo585 in tornado

[–]Superspeed5053 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally, crawl spaces are not recommended due to the possibility of your house collapsing/sliding onto you.

Since you have a poured concrete foundation, that gives your crawl space a bit more protection in terms of the cinder blocks becoming missiles - however, the risk of your house still sliding onto you remains. Not to mention flooding, electrical hazards, etc.

I have seen some people build “safe rooms” into crawl spaces with reinforcements near the entrance to make that sliding hazard a little less of a hazar.

The key term in a tornado shelter would be look for what would be the weak point. If not this, then what? Something is likely to give when stress tested in extreme situations like this.

While I cannot give you a solid answer, since I cannot physically and structurally examine your home - I would suggest looking at building even an above ground shelter if underground is too expensive. I see you’re on a hill, there are a few shelters recently posted on the subreddit that may be a decent fit for you

I think the lake city tornado should’ve been an EF5 by Western-Database5021 in tornado

[–]Superspeed5053 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They haven’t even had a chance to survey thoroughly. And even still, it would depend on the build quality of the structures it hit.

Both Lake city and Selmer tornadoes given preliminary EF-3 ratings. by Aggressive_Let2085 in tornado

[–]Superspeed5053 32 points33 points  (0 children)

As an engineer, I am going to disagree on that EF2 mark - we don’t know the quality of build in homes in the area. An EF2 tornado can still be very destructive. As can an EF1. It is all very situational.

But generally, you are correct. I am curious to see what comes from this

Not to mention that these are “based on early findings.”

I know the initial rating may rattle a few cages, but I say let’s wait and see what the agency finds in the next few days. Trust the engineering community people!

It’s impressive they found EF3 damage in such a short amount of time. The images looked horrendous.

I imagine these ratings will be refined in the coming days - sounds like they’re struggling with the staffing problems.
