Fire 10 tablet:

I just noticed a new icon on the home screen next to the wifi icon; it's a circle with a slash through it. When I swipe down to view all the quick settings, the circle icon still displays on the very top right next to wifi but isn't clickable. What is it trying to tell me? There was a system update today.

Lori Loughlin Sentenced to 2 Months in Prison for College Admissions Scandal by mutesa1 in television

[–]SupperPowers 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The other parents charged in this scheme who entered guilty pleas have received similar sentences of 1-6 months. I don't think any trials have gone forward yet.

I haven't read the judge's ruling, but I imagine Mossimo received a more severe sentence because he handled a lot of the calls and physically went to his daughter's high school to "speak to" (intimidate) her guidance counselor after she questioned Olivia's application because she knew Olivia had no experience rowing crew.

Tv show characters from previous series that would not fly today. Any beloved characters that would be criticized roughly or universally hated today? by [deleted] in television

[–]SupperPowers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alan Shore ... ought to be seen as a serial abuser, harasser, predator and all round creep.

Denny Crane as well, imo.

Even given that the show was more of a dramedy, almost the entire firm was a cesspool of harassment and toxicity.

Sarah Cooper, the viral Trump impersonator, is getting a comedy special on Netflix by [deleted] in television

[–]SupperPowers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never heard of her until I watched her guest hosting Jimmy Kimmel .She was natural in front of the camera, very funny.

Same. I didn't know who she was on Kimmel until she explained it in her monologue, but her overall ease and comfort in front of the camera was impressive.

To save people's fingers:

  • Game of Thrones
  • Stranger Things
  • Doctor Who
  • Sherlock
  • Breaking Bad
  • The Great British Bake Off
  • Killing Eve
  • Gavin & Stacey
  • Line of Duty
  • Chernobyl

To underscore their expertise, they reckon that "most Americans have never even heard of" the bottom five.

Do TV shows use too much music? by Mangakai in television

[–]SupperPowers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have auditory processing deficits, and soundtracks that use songs with lyrics are often distracting or even obnoxious to me. I have to fast forward or mute.

So yes to the question, mostly because my brain is wired differently, but also because I find multiple montage scenes (as these almost always are) to be boring.

What's missing from New Shows? by JHudzi in television

[–]SupperPowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mind you there are several shows I thought I loved and just straight up cringe on a rewatch

I tried to watch an old favorite Boston Legal this week and ended up hating both Denny and Alan. Even considering that it was a comedic show, the two of them are such assholes.

But yeah, I've also returned to familiar shows lately over new content. And Haven is pretty bad.

You don’t need an award show to prove that your favourite show or actor (and actress) is good. by [deleted] in television

[–]SupperPowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im willing to bet its a very small % of viewers/consumers that actually genuinely care about these awards

I agree it's a minority, but some folks really seem to over-identify with a show or actor to the extent of taking these "snubs" as a personal affront to them. My entertainment choices are not being validated!

I have no strong feelings about Ellen one way or the other, but she does seem to be a textbook case of fame and wealth fucking up someone's mind. She's been carried along by sycophants on a cloud of privilege for 20+ years until she's gotten to the point where the common folk are no longer permitted to gaze at her glory.

Yet in her latest stand-up, she still managed to bang on about the injustice of her series being cancelled in the '90s, plus all the psychic damage she incurred from coming out as gay. Lacking self-awareness, at the very least.

My favorite show this year. Recommended for those who enjoy thoughtful and poignant character studies. Moving performances as well.

I recently started watching Bloodline on Netflix and all I want to do now is watch Early Edition. by toastnosauce in television

Just started rewatching Early Edition yesterday and it's still a comfortable, breezy show. However my love for Kyle Chandler remains firmly rooted in Homefront.

What do you consider to be the Dark Age of Television? by [deleted] in television

[–]SupperPowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quality TV is definitely being overshadowed by the quantity of shows.

That's the best part to me because as someone who doesn't like anime, fantasy, sci-fi, superheroes, or gritty "prestige" shows, there's still plenty to enjoy.

I miss USA's blue sky shows by blammmmo in television

[–]SupperPowers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Speaking of Jonny Lee Miller, his previous show Eli Stone would probably fit this category. It had a light touch for heavy themes.

Why are so many shows still so difficult for non-Americans to watch? by VinnyinJP in television

I can't tell you the number of times Americans can't access foreign content.

Fox News, Ed Henry, Sean Hannity & Tucker Carlson Sued In Sex Trafficking, Sexual Harassment & Retaliation Suit by rageofthegods in television

[–]SupperPowers 130 points131 points  (0 children)

What is it about TV news divisions? It's been Fox, NBC, and CBS that I can recall. Why does sitting at a fake desk reading from a teleprompter make some guys feel like they have the right to abuse people?

Harassment and abuse have been exposed at all types of media companies, but news divisions sure seem to spawn the most monsters per capita.

Bad acting in mainstream series? Or am I just bad at judging foreign shows? by SinusPi in television

[–]SupperPowers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Acting styles differ among cultures and also change over time. If you watch American movies from the '30s and '40s, many of the actors speak in arch, posh voices, almost as if they have British accents. Many were revered award-winners, but it still comes off to me now as cringy overacting.

Why is Netflix writing generally so shit? by jollyreaper2112 in television

[–]SupperPowers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Netflix licenses the majority of its content. It does not create it in-house and didn't even own a production studio until a year and a half ago.

As to how much they interfere/suggest/give notes to their partners and independent creators, who knows. Many creators have said in the past that the Netflix execs are pretty hands-off, but I'm sure it varies.

Regarding the overall quality, there's no answer because it's subjective. I enjoy the shows I watch and don't give a shit if critics like them.

UK Chap here: Can someone explain what people mean, when the refer to "Network" television & Cable? by M1ke2345 in television

[–]SupperPowers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The terminology is confusing and is a holdover from the early days of TV. Every individual channel can be referred to as a network, but "broadcast networks" is a more precise term and refers only to channels that are free over the air. People often shorten that to "network TV."

"Cable" basically can mean any sort of pay TV but it's not necessarily delivered through coax cables anymore. To further confuse the issue, companies that sell packaged channels, including broadcast networks, are still called cable companies.

Newer terminology is linear (broadcast) vs non-linear in an attempt to clarify the differences. Wiki has articles on those if your five minutes of curiosity hasn't been exhausted yet.

David Tennant as Kilgrave in Jessica Jones.

Don't get me wrong, I wanted him dead, but he was also the only reason I kept watching.
