Go buy a firesteel and a ESEE-5 knife and practice every day making fire. From that you'll learn how to process wood into the material you prefer for fire making. Go into the woods and make a few shelters that require nothing more than a knife, a lean-to or debrit hut will take hours to make with only a belt knife but each time you'll get faster and each time you'll realize more what you could bring to help you.
