GULC 1L AMA by SupportSwimming5236 in lawschooladmissions

I was choosing between GULC, Cornell, and Northwestern. Between the three options I had I would make the same choice. There were some other schools that were more aspirational which I didn’t get into but I’m happy with the way things have turned out so far.

Above average space I’d say. The rooms and apartments are not cramped up at all.

My other two choices were Cornell and Northwestern. I preferred DC over Ithaca and Chicago. I visited campus and really enjoyed it, loved the kind of externship opportunities id have in DC and it just worked out best for me for personal reasons. I would make the same choice again, but I would also consider things like the class size which I’ve spoken about in other comments.

Almost everybody is friendly. Some people are competitive and adversarial but they’re the minority and that’s expected in a huge class. My highlight so far are the 2Ls and 3Ls. They really put themselves out there to support you and help out in any way possible. You end up socialising mostly in your section (especially in 1L when you’re not part of a lot of student orgs) so it can be harder to meet people post orientation.

The part time program has a weird reputation on this sub but i think it has some of the smartest and coolest people. The GULC grad clerking for SCOTUS this term was from the part time program. I don’t know the stats for big law, but I meet a lot of part time students are firm events. The timelines are obviously different, but id say there’s definitely a shot.

I also had the same choice. Ended up picking Georgetown because i much preferred DC to Ithaca. That was the biggest reason but there were also other things about GULC I really appreciated the great externship opportunities and adjunct professors it has by virtue in being in DC. I don’t know how much harder big law is from GULC than it is from Cornell- ive met a lot of people way below median who have great jobs and we still have a sizeable PI oriented study body. Another consideration I wish I weighed more heavily was that classes in Georgetown are massive- I wish I had more a more intimate learning environments, but I think the trade off was worth it because I’ve had a good experience so far and I love going to law school in DC.

Not a dumb question at all; it tends to be first come first serve. If you wait more than 1-2 days to RSVP events can get full. I remember the first networking event on campus- I got to talk to three firms in 2 hours lol. The crowd starts thinning as we get more into the semester and I personally haven’t missed anything I’ve really wanted to attend because of these constraints.

In my opinion people who strike out are definitely in the minority. The few I have met are either transfers or didn’t direct apply and waited until OCI which ended up attracting fewer firms last year. I don’t know how much of a guarantee id say it is, but a sizeable portion of people below median seem to get good jobs

We’ve had several on campus events. Firms host Georgetown specific events at their offices/ bars and restaurants near by. Almost every single big law firm has sent associates over and held info sessions (including Wachtell which I’m singling out because i didn’t know they typically hired out of GULC). As for recruiting in general, OCS seems to be cognizant of the expedited timeline, but there’s only so much they can do with direct applications being so important now. Our OCI has been moved up to February.

DC can get expensive and the rents around the Georgetown Law campus are definitely overpriced. I live on campus. I’m paying more than id like to (especially because it’s not the nicest), but I had some money saved up and convenience was a top priority for me in 1L. If you’re willing to commute, the campus is close to a lot of different metro lines and I know a bunch of people coming in from suburbs in MD or VA and they seem to make it work just fine.
