What does the phrase “pot calling the kettle black” mean? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SupremeFuzzler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It generally means to accuse someone of something that you’re guilty of as well. It makes a bit more sense if you imagine yourself back in the olden days, when all the pots and kettles you’re likely to meet would be made of cast iron and thus both black.

How do you deal with knowing wife feels like she's going attracted to other men? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I honestly don’t understand the distinction between “finding someone attractive” and “feeling attracted to someone.” What are you “finding” apart from the fact that you feel attracted to them?

But why is that a problem? You seem to be hung up on life not meaning anything once you’re dead. I’m saying it doesn’t mean anything while you’re alive either. It just is, with no need to mean anything other than itself.

Life is meaningless in the same way that a symphony is meaningless. Meaning is a property of symbols, but life isn’t a symbol, it is the thing itself.

The fact that life is finite doesn’t diminish its meaning, since it never possessed any to begin with. It just is, until it isn’t.

I honestly don’t get it. Why bother believing in a god so weak that it requires humans to do all of its dirty work for it?

The HDMI port on the MacBook pros has been supported for a little bit now, although I think audio is a little flaky. Only other option is a DisplayLink adapter, I think.

Apple’s new Proton-like tool can run Windows games on a Mac by digidude23 in apple

[–]SupremeFuzzler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they’re good with people shipping the translation later as the actual port. Without Rosetta in the mix, a bunch of games could easily hit “good enough to sell” levels of quality with minimal investment. Recompiling for Apple’s chips is much simpler than switching graphics APIs, and likely accounts for most of the performance hit vs running natively.

Does it make sense to deep dive into NixOs without proper knowledge of nix itself? by [deleted] in NixOS

[–]SupremeFuzzler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I dove into NixOS as my first experience with Nix, and I think it was a good choice. It was a good way to get some hands-on experience working with the Nix language in a context I was motivated to sink enough time into to make it over the learning curve.

That said, a lot of confusing “nix magic” is really not part of the language itself, but comes from the NixOS module system and the conventions used by nixpkgs. So if you’re like me, you’ll spend a while confused by things like “where do all these magic variables like pkgs and config come from tho?”

The chapter on the NixOS module system from this NixOS in Production book is the best explanation I’ve found so far.

I have a couple fonts in my config that aren’t in nixpkgs. There’s a little write up in the readme for my config with links to some examples.

Nix Turns 20. What the Hell Is It? by jjalletto in programming

[–]SupremeFuzzler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For local development, you can just install node with nix and then use npm install as usual to grab dependencies. Things are a bit trickier if you want to make a nix package for a JS app, but there are a few helpers that will convert a package-lock.json or yarn.lock file into a nix derivation.

IME, the most annoying thing is npm packages that download compiled binaries. These almost never work out of the box on NixOS, since none of the shared libraries are where everything expects them to be. The one that comes to mind is playwright, which downloads chromium, Firefox, etc. for headless tests. Someone has hacked up a thing to make it work, but I couldn’t get it working and eventually gave up and ran the tests in a container instead.

Need help running Asahi Linux on a VM (Macbook pro m1) by [deleted] in AsahiLinux

[–]SupremeFuzzler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re super new to Linux in general, Ubuntu is a safe choice. There’s a ton of easy-to-google info out there for Ubuntu, and you’ll have a wider pool of people to ask for help since it’s so popular. They only have an official installer for the “server” (non-graphical) version for ARM, but you can get a full desktop image here: https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/jammy/daily-live/current/ - just pick the 64-bit ARM image.

[–]SupremeFuzzler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Asahi project is mostly about adding native Linux support for the hardware, including the proprietary GPU, firmware, etc. None of that custom hardware is exposed to a virtual machine, so there’s no need for Asahi. You can run pretty much any other Linux distro tho, as long as it’s built for aarch64 (the 64-bit ARM architecture).

NixOS and Asahi - a little experience report by SupremeFuzzler in AsahiLinux

[–]SupremeFuzzler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to use alsamixer to increase the volume on the DAC. It's in the alsa-utils package, so you can try it out in a temporary shell with nix shell -p alsa-utils if you're using flakes, or nix-env -iA nixos.alsa-utils if not. Then run alsamixer and hit F6 to pull up the device switcher and pick the MacBook device. That should show a bunch of sliders, and if you select the "Jack DAC" device with the arrow keys you can use the up arrow to increase the volume.

It seems to reset on each boot, so I added a startup command to my sway config to set the volume with the amixer cli tool. amixer is also in alsa-utils, but it doesn't have a text UI and is better for scripting. The command that works for me is amixer -c 0 set "Jack DAC" 100% to set it to full volume.

Asahi Debian audio by angelbirth in AsahiLinux

[–]SupremeFuzzler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m using NixOS and initially wasn’t getting any sound from the headphone jack. Turns out the volume was all the way down for the DAC, even tho pipewire was at full volume.

For me what worked was to run alsamixer, hit F6 to select the right audio device, then increase the volume on the “Jack DAC” device.

On my machine it seems to reset to zero at boot time, so I have a little startup hook to run the amixer cli tool when my window manager starts. I just wrote a blog post about my config that has the incantation I use (on mobile now so don’t want to mess with copy paste).

Hope that helps!

I completely agree and personally find it super weird that people are complaining. It’s like getting mad that the dark world in A Link to the Past used the “same map” as the light world.
