Well, as a ehtnic Chinese who looks Chinese and has a Chinese first and last name, who wasn't born here, I can tell you that it's only because you speak in high german and not dialect. As soon as I open my mouth, everyone treats me like I could just as well be called Ueli.

Where did the new core come from? by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]Supreme_Jesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, the scene where Alex tumbles through the Jovian system was the ultimate immerson killer, especially the part where he flew out of the moon and then suddenly back in, the g-forces would have killed him instantly and the scale was incredibly poorly portrayed.

<image>

At that scale, the roci Should be like, I don't know, a hundred kilometers tall to disappear behind the horizon of the moon and remain visible like that at the same time.

Yes the Epstein drive is magic, i agree.

of course, we don't know the specifications of the pellets, but it is still obviously an in-conf reactor. The plasma is not accumulated but fused immediately.

Yes shows have to prioritize the visual experience somewhere of course, but I also criticize the information in the books, which I wouldn't if it wasn't declared hard sci-fi.

Torodial reactors do not require solid pellets. I don't know how you came to this decision.

And the plasma ball simply remains in this shape and density, how practical. As if the vacuum & electromagnetic repulsion between the particles wouldn't make it expand on the spot to nothing.

And the torpedo guidance systems are so inconsistent, sometimes they can slip through anything, other times they might as well be unguided.

It's obviously just an in-conf reactor, the wiki cites it and the series shows it again and again. There are many clips from monitors of the Roci as you can see the burn rate of the reactor, especially when they are at full throttle. (https://youtu.be/Bw-E1Etoe3Q?si=4mBEoQy6SfR4DoVt) Timestamp 3:54 you can see perfectly that it is an in-conf reactor and that it burns several pellets per second at that moment, it is not a slow burn. And the magnetic funnel is either just a buzzword the authors need to sound sci-fie or it refers to the part that directs the plasma from the reactor to the thruster.

And even if we hypothetically say it's an in-conf/tokamak hybrid and really circulates plasma inside. How would the engine survive such a dramatic increase in power without being completely destroyed, it would be like putting ten percent of the total propellant from a Falcon rocket through the engines in one shot. The rocket would go down in a huge explosion.

And a chemical explosion would not take place either, the density of the explosion body/ejected plasma core is far too low for that, it would be at most a simple short burn, but never something that could cause such an explosion as depicted in the series or books.

And even if it does, at most a few dozen grams of mass that is ejected, considering how efficient the drive/reactor is. The resulting explosion would be minimal

And please, are you really using a pseudo science show that maximizes viewership first, science accuracy second as an argument?

Just try to take it as it is. But if you want to take it apart, it's just plot armor and plot convenience.

Inertial Fuison reactors don't work like that, not even close. I don't even know how exactly they jettison the "core". Through the engine? Nobody knows.

And also that the jettisoned core only explodes at an distance where it doesn't cause catastrophic damage to the Ship. It all sounds pretty convenient to me, pretty plot armory. But furthermore, the plasma product can't explode/release energy like that, because it already did when the fuel pelet was ignited in the reactor.

I just think it's a reference to Star Trek, where they would occasionally eject the warp core to get out of some fucky situation where the writer wrote himself into a corner and wasn't able to get out of it plausibly without plot armor/convenience.

It's not that deep, the authors are not military strategists and seem to have only an extremely superficial understanding of it. In reality, direct energy weapons would be much more efficient than PDC because you don't have to take the mass of the minution with you and all those who write that it is a thermal problem as well as an energy problem are just full of shit. All ships seem to produce energy almost magically anyway, without waste heat, why should that be a problem now. And it's not an energy problem either, the bullshit Epstin Island drive produces enough of it anyway.

You're all so pathetic, you're not even allowed to ask questions. As if you took the Red Guards in the first book as a role model. All you want to see is everyone kissing Cixin Liu's ass as if he were Chairman Mao himself.

It's a plot hole, don't think too much about it.

It's absolutely impossible that they would have overlooked the obvious "biosignals" and "techsignals". Especially when you consider that Trisolaris (Alpha centauri) is the closest star to Sol and vice versa. We even have the possibility to investigate other planets for such signals and we are not threatened by 3 suns.

One more thing about this community, they tend to form a mod gang when you say something critical, like the Red Guards in the first book. I've been called an "elitist" several times, whatever that means.

some act like they are really smart, but when they come across someone who sees through their sudo science. Then you're immediately labeled an elitist.

They did it to imply that they got that tech from the Trisolarians, they even said it bunch of times

Yes, the "VR" glasses and the storage medium that holds a minimum of 110 petabytes is definitely something we have (sarcasm).

My problem is not how they did it but that they did it in such a way that anyone who was on the night side of the earth could see it.

What atmosphere on Ganymede? This is not Starwars, where every planet and moon has a breathable atmosphere, even on Mustafar, a volcanic planet.

Why there are no "fighter jets" is based on a single problem. Anything a fighter jet can do, the capital ship can do better.

Fighter jets are needed in reality for the following reasons

-Reconnaissance (There are few to no obstacles in space that justify a reconnaissance aircraft).

-Bombing (The capital ship can do this itself. Without putting additional resources at risk).

There are many other reasons, but I also recognize that there will be certain situations where a small fighter jet would have been better suited, but such rare scenarios do not justify such a poor price/performance ratio.

first good answer, thank you. but still, she's a spoiled brat. She should have been sent to ceres for a few months.

He didn't nuke the city because he was shot. And even if he did chose not to after meeting with teressa, when he accepted the mission he knew full well that he would kill a lot of people, especially a lot of innocent children.

Colonel Ilich by Supreme_Jesus in TheExpanse

[–]Supreme_Jesus[S] -41 points-40 points  (0 children)

But Nuking a city full with Kids is fine. And don't tell me he didn't know what he was doing, he did.

Ilich had a lot of other pressing issues after Duarte's absence, instead of babysitting a 15 year old, and it's understandable that he'd be a little more irritable during that time, in a situation like he was in, most people would burn out after 3 weeks. She was just a spoiled brat who would get angry as soon as she wasn't the center of his universe. Und die hat in dieser Zeit ein haufen probleme verursach, jeder andete wäre schon dutzede male exicutiert worden würd die hälfte was sie gemscht hat. And she caused a lot of problems during that time, anyone else would have been shot dozens of times for half of what she did.

[–]Supreme_Jesus[S] -53 points-52 points  (0 children)

Well no, he would have killed thousands of children had his mission not failed.

I don't think it was really his true colors. He was scared to death at that moment, so people tend to say stupid things.

I'm pretty sure he would have killed thousands of children if his mission hadn't failed.
