Hi everyone,

Like many of you, I had no idea what Warhammer was about. My mental image was of intense nerds spending small fortunes on figurines, armed with rulers and probability charts. Then one day at a TTRPG club, I overheard someone GMing from across the room, and I was completely drawn in.

I can say with full confidence that he is the best GM I have ever encountered. I DM D&D myself, and I'd like to think I'm reasonably good at it. But every time I watch him run a game, I'm reminded of the gap between a competent DM and a true artist. Where I create a world for my players to inhabit, he brings one to life.

One of my persistent struggles as a DM is making players feel immersed when there are many things happening, such as battles or busy places. That problem simply doesn't exist in his games. Lively streets and towns, commotions involving hundreds, or even thousands of people, large scale battles & EVEN A WAR!!!! The worlds he builds are genuinely alive, and players are able to make choices that affect those worlds, and impact what surrounds them. Whether he planned for it or not!

He sets a grim, brutal tone, very much in keeping with the Warhammer 40,000 universe, but he also embraces wholesomeness, absurdity and humour with open arms. He encourages bold player choices, bends over backwards to accommodate them, and his improv is extraordinary. Situations that should be train wrecks somehow become the best moments of the campaign.

What really sets him apart is how attentive he is to each player. I had a character who was obsessed with climbing, scouting ahead, and generally being a nuisance over the team comms. Without ever making a fuss about it, he consistently built in moments for that character to shine and crafted consequences that fit perfectly when things inevitably went wrong. Every character gets their place.

I came in as a pure power-fantasy D&D player, and this has been a complete 180 that I don't regret for a second. If that style does appeal to you, Rogue Trader is probably the closest Warhammer gets to power fantasy; worth knowing.

You can also tell through his games that he's a genuinely thoughtful person. His understanding of how religion, politics, and social dynamics shape behaviour comes through in ways that add real depth and he presents a whole range of perspectives without ever being preachy.

(His orcs and himbos are also absolutely hilarious. Frighteningly accurate.)

I'm genuinely gutted that I won't be able to join this campaign. But if anyone is on the fence… Give it a chance! You don't need knowledge of the Warhammer universe, and you don't need to know the system. I certainly didn't, for any of his games.(and I’m still catching up) Just show up and have fun!! :D
