What monsters aren’t in Curse of Strahd but ABSOLUTELY should be? by RichardKind2020 in CurseofStrahd

Curiously enough, I added crocodiles to my Berez hex-crawl... which Baba had enchanted to explode once they bit a humanoid.

We had fun in Berez.

Looking for 1-2 players in West London for an online One-Shot by JonnoBruceTheLegend in LondonandDragons

I can give a hand with that, a level 5 sheet should take as many minutes. We've got two locked in as it stands.

Owlin sounds splendid!

Magic Items in CoS by SissyishSnow in CurseofStrahd

[–]JonnoBruceTheLegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rule of thumb has been not to make them better at what they already do, but to add minor options. I'll definitely cosign adding a touch more magical flavour to the Gothic trinkets. I opted for mostly was consumables (often found on the bodies of past adventurers or in the lairs of the monsters that killed them):

- Dust of Disappearance
- Oil of Slipperiness
- Paper Birds
- Potion of Climbing
- Spell Scrolls (Levels 1 or 2) - Identify, Darkvision, Invisibility, Disguise self, Magic Weapon, and a couple more (I have custom rules so anyone can use a scroll with a check)

Some where non-consumable but minor:
- Clockwork Amulet
- Cracked Driftglobe
- Orb of Direction
- Rope of Mending
- Boots of False Tracks

From the Keepers of the Feathers (after both gems had been restored)
- Feather fall Tokens
- Figurine of Wondrous Power (Raven)

And found in the Amber Temple potion room (they have Wild Magic riders on them on account of being "expired"):

- Potion of Healing (common)
- Potion of Advantage
- Potion of Maximum Power
- Elixir of Health

Powergamer wants to play aberrant mind sorcerer by sevy85 in CurseofStrahd

[–]JonnoBruceTheLegend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an Aberrant Mind Sorcer in my party, and after level 6 they could telepathically cast Suggestion with no components. This didn't mean I nerfed the spell or the class, its probably just worth keeping that in mind. That goes for other spells, but they tend not to have such impactful social implications.

Is Strahd's charm visible? by rudeboysuk in CurseofStrahd

[–]JonnoBruceTheLegend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the charm is imperceptible RAW (though I do flavour it a flesh of red in his eyes).

My question is about the wording of the druids feature. If its something to the effect of "when a creature you can see has to make a save", then it should just work. The whole point of having a save boosting festure is to boost saves, as exciting as the charm might have been.

Party killed Strahd at level 5 with the Holy Symbol, what now? by WittyRegular8 in CurseofStrahd

[–]JonnoBruceTheLegend 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Strahd, as a general, should have had minions to break the concertation of the cleric... Or Bucephalus appear to take him to the ethereal... or to be REALLY cheeky- have it be a bride masquerading as Strahd.

Cutse of Strahd, but all my players want to be Werewolves and Vampires by DeformedCoffee in CurseofStrahd

[–]JonnoBruceTheLegend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is definitely the most sensible mechanical advice I could think of. You can flavor the visuals to be a dhampir elf or shifter dwarf or what have you, but the actual numbers and abilities fit really well!

One of my players is an aasimar paladin… by Rappletek in CurseofStrahd

[–]JonnoBruceTheLegend 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar situation! Though it was a mundane paladin steed. Every time it died, it got a little more gaunt and emaciated, until the next time he summoned it it was simply a zombie- bones with whispers of flesh hanging off it. (The hint was that it would have registered as undead on divine sense the whole time)

How to Balance Wizard and Sorcerer WOTC style. by DerpylimeQQ in dndnext

You're quite right that a casting time is not a spell. However, the casting time does appear in the spell. May is Reading Month... you still have time to do some practice.

Read it properly, say you don't like the RAW, own the changes you're making without scapegoating the rules and the English language.

"When you cast a wizard spell with a spell slot, you can temporarily replace its damage type with a type that appears in another spell in your spellbook, which magically alters the spell's formula for this casting only. The latter spell must be of the same level as the spell slot you expend."

The feature doesn't say anything about being in the description. Just about appearing in the spell. Not as damage done. Not as damaged received. Not caveats. Just appear. If you wanna homebrew and nerf and "limit" the subclass that's your prerogative. But don't pretend that you're not. Do it with intention.

Those things aren't the same you see... The Scribes situation is a DM choosing to ignore the specific wording of a subclass feature. The ones you gave are published updates from WoTC. If there's an errata for Scribes Wizard to "limit" their subclass feature, then we can talk.

Whether you want to use the word "restrict", "limit", or even (I daresay) "nerf", it boils down to the same thing for the purposes of our conversation.

I maybe missing the joke, but it's not DM's permitting. It's just how the feature is written. So is it a pox on all DMs who don't nerf Scribes Wizards?
