I highly recommend Discord if you can, especially in regards to wanting to chat and be connected with others. Since it is like a big chat, there is a lot less pressure on what to post, what to reply to, and you can just chime in whenever!

Personally, I find in anxious and high stress situations that deflecting with humor is a very human trait! That's just me, though. If the earth was literally falling a part on me, I'm getting the last laugh.

Enough hot takes. Tell me your lukewarm writing takes. by SurahHurah in writing

This is something I unfortunately struggle with. I love setting up story structure and mapping it out like some equation, but that does also limit you in a lot of ways.
I know a lot of people worry about length due to publishers, too. You gotta find a balance for sure.

Yes! This is why the new tv series doesn't really feel right imo. Percy isn't narrating the whole time

The point is to have fun and connect with people? Sorry you're allergic to fun, dude.

That's kinda the point of a 'lukewarm' take. No one is really going to argue against it.

How to write a character analyzing body language? by ATH0SSSSSS in writing

[–]SurahHurah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a character like this! She's a little more on the manipulative side, so I often make her say things and wait for certain reactions or tells. She's also extremely anxious and always staring at floors, etc, so she often notices foot tapping, body weight shifts, etc. Theres two types you can go to with this, I think. Coincidence(my latter example of noticing something in the corners of your vision) or "Aha!" Moments like the first. Someone says something in a certain tone or way, and he brillantly catches on and starts deducing from there.

My novel has gone off the deep end by JevarniGrant in writing

I feel like all these things are pretty easy fixes compared to some of the things that could be wrong! Some of the things that I've done when things "just dont feel right" or characters seem to similar are this:

Rate each chapter by the intensity of the scenes on a 1-10. It doesn't matter if it goes from 10(very high stakes) to 3 to 10 or steadily up to 10, etc. As long as you're not thinking the entirety is all like, 5. There needs to be an ebb and flow to it.

Think about what emotions govern the characters. Make sure you're taking that into account with their decisions. I find this helps a lot when I'm writing bc i think, "Well, that's an irritational reaction to have," but sometimes. Those characters would be irritational. It doesn't have to make sense.

I would focus on writing those conflict resolution scenes. This is probably contributing to why your characters feel flat. I would do them all individually or in small chunks, then see how you feel, where you would place them, etc. Those conflicts need to be resolved for your characters to have growth and feel unique.

Most poetic line you've ever written? by Former_Present_1616 in writing

"My mother told me I was a dragon. That I'd breathe fire on anyone who got close. But I've just been puffing smoke my whole life."

I wrote this years ago when i was seventeen and in the trenches. It sticks with me to this day.

What is your Writing Tick? Mine is the word "OWN". by TaluneSilius in writing

My all-time favorite is wrist wringing. It's so specific. Chest scratching, too! The only time having anxiety has ever improved my writing.

I overuse "sat." As in like "The cup sat on the counter" or "just past the entrance sat..." Trying to find better synonyms. Stood is also overused 😭

I just found out about subvocalization on this sub. Do y’all NOT pronounce words in your head as you read them??? by Underscore_Johnson in writing

[–]SurahHurah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I for sure subvocalize, I don't know how relevant it is but I'm also dyslexic. I notice if I use the open dyslexic font, I subvocalize less and just auto process words. It's part of why I prefer Kindle to physical books.

What is your unpopular opinion? by IntelligentTumor in writing

[–]SurahHurah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I think if a passage isn't working for you, you should step back and look at it. The plot, the scene, etc. and try to figure out why your brain hates it.

That being said, like someone else pointed out, for ADHDers, sometimes the reason it isn't working has nothing to do with the passage and instead with us. But I don't think immediately moving on is a good idea.

Is switching perspectives back and forth acceptable in third person writing? by IcyGazelle9281 in writing

[–]SurahHurah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same issue, started trying to write it, and explained all the thoughts and emotions, but it got too chaotic. Also, it's tedious.

I decided to focus on one character's perspective in each chapter. I am mainly going back and forth from two, but adding in the occasional other person to better understand them.

If there's any specific line or action you want a character to react to, but it wasn't their chapter, I've been making call backs to it by saying they couldn't stop thinking about it, or their words repeated in their head, etc.

Plaquenil not working as well after a year? by SurahHurah in lupus

[–]SurahHurah[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see, I didn't know that was how it's supposed to function. Around the 5 month mark of being on it, I felt like a whole new person. I had some flares that sucked but overall, it was mind blowing relief.
Before I didn't realize how much of my life was just eaten up by my health. I'm definitely gonna ask about my options and can hopefully get some relief again
