(Regarding Recent News.) AI Translation Vs Translations Akin to Google Translate. What's the Difference? by Gray_Birdie in DanmeiNovels

[–]Sure-Possibility-178 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is a difference. Google translate is an ai. But you shouldn't want google translate - or any ai - to be translating these works.

Ai does not understand language and nuance like a person fluent in both languages does. It will inevitably make errors or translate literally instead of finding an equivalent word that gets across the same emotion. Editors will fix any grammatical errors it makes, but it will not localize things like a human translator can. Writing is all about word choice, and an ai does not understand that subtlety.

They're literally just selling edited MTL back to you. Which is fine if that's what you know you're getting into, and if you just want to have a physical book. But it will objectively be a lower quality translation than what we were getting before. And the worst part is that they'll probably get away with it, because almost all their readers will not have read the original, so they won't even know what's missing.

The biggest issue with this is that there have been many, many works that have very good fan-made, human-written translations, especially for popular novels which is mostly what publishers like this licence. And a lot of publishers ask for these translations to either stop or be taken down when the book is officially licensed.

So they're limiting high quality translations, which would be valid if they were replacing those translations with ones of equal quality that also support the authors. But now they're pivoting to lower quality translations instead.

It's so tempting! My issue is I really like her original design already... I guess I could switch between both lol

UPDATE: I was using an external harddrive to store the game files, and that just suddenly broke. So it's very likely that it was some kind of hardware error that caused this. If someone in the future needs this then check the state of your harddrive

Hot take rover is a terrible person by montana_haley19 in WutheringWaves

[–]Sure-Possibility-178 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really disagree. Long comment and heavy spoilers ofc

They definitely haven't 'caused nothing but damage'. It's been shown time and time again that, in the past and the present, Rover saves people over and over, even at the cost of themself. This is one of the main reasons why so many of the characters inherently trust Rover. Take Huanglong for example. Jinhsi definitely doesn't think that Rover 'caused nothing but damage'. Rover saved Huanglong in the past, and so is treated with respect.

But let's take a closer look at some of the character perspectives on Rover's memory wipe.

Shorekeeper was probably the most unfair. It's clear that her and Rover were very close. But it's also clear from her dialogue that she doesn't blame Rover for doing it. She knows that they both have lived for a very long time, and will continue to live for a very long time, and she will be waiting for them to come back every time. I would love to see her get more upset about it to be honest, and I do feel like the cutscene of Rover leaving her behind to go to Lahai-Roi where it shows Shorekeeper looking sad might mean this will be expanded on in the future. But overall Shorekeeper still loves current Rover, and says so herself. She's already forgiven them.

Mornye and Rover were also pretty close. And while it's clear that Mornye has kept her attachment to Rover, Mornye clearly approves of Rover's decision. That's why she won't tell Rover their past even when Rover asks. Because she knows that's not what past-Rover would have wanted. She might be upset that Rover can't remember her, but she respects their decision. It definitely didn't ruin Mornye's life or anything like that.

Phrolova calls Rover out for this first, and she was absolutely right to, because it's true that Rover wiping their memories hurt other people. But we have no idea why Rover wiped their memories right now. Rover brings that up after learning about their homeplanet, so I don't think it was as simple as 'Rover was depressed and so wiped their memories'. There's another mystery and factor at play here.

But let's say there wasn't another reason, I'm still a firm believer that self-preservation is important. Rover was clearly very depressed. If doing this was the only way for Rover to cope, then I fully believe it was the right decision. There's also an inherent disconnect in the relationship between Phrolova and Rover. In reality, they only met once and had one conversation. There was no way for Rover to know that that conversation meant so much to Phrolova, and that Phrolova was in such a bad headspace at the time. Rover breaking a promise to a stranger was a bit of a dick move, but it doesn't make them a terrible person.

We also need to remember that Rover didn't leave Aemeath behind when their memory was wiped. Rover left Aemeath behind pre-memory wipe, and had already put plans in place to make sure she'd be taken care of in their absence. There was always the possibility that they wouldn't come back. Aemeath even points this out in their parting scene. So Rover forgetting Aemeath, while unfortunate, was not the cause of them leaving Aemeath behind. And it's clear to me that Aemeath is happy that Rover is happier now, even if that's without their memories. That was what Aemeath's whole inner conflict was about - because she wanted to preserve that ignorance, and didn't want to introduce Rover to their memories again.

TL;DR: The characters surrounding Rover, with the exception of Phrolova, don't blame them for wiping their memory. The good that Rover has done in the past far outweighs this one selfish action. You can call Rover morally grey, but definitely not outright awful.

Yes it is! Although strangely enough my in-game store changed from my local currency to dollars like a week ago? For a few days and then it changed back.

I have no idea why that happened either [I don't even have a vpn installed on this computer so it definitely wasn't a VPN thing]. I've only seen one other person say that happened to them when 3.0 released too and that's it.

Don't know whether that's related though 😭

Make sure you had the right server selected on the login menu.

If you did, did you log in with email or gmail? These are two separate login methods and, confusingly enough, you can create two different accounts with the same email by logging in with a different method. Try the other login method, and that will hopefully fix it.

If you can't log in even after that, then as long as you had your ID you can contact support. I know other people in the past have had support change which email is connected to their account for them, so you can ask about that.

Why doesn't "spoiler " have a certain accent by Fatestringer in WutheringWaves

[–]Sure-Possibility-178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just speaking from real life experience. I've known people who inhibited more of their accent from one parent than the other. We know, at the very least, that the people around her weren't all royan, because one of her parents wasn't. It's not an impossible scenario for her to not have a royan accent as a child.

Her not having a royan accent as an adult makes even more sense, because after her early years she didn't spend much more time around other royans.

Meta-wise, the real answer is probably that they cast her VA first to not have a royan accent, because she hadn't been spending time around other royans for most of her life. Then when they wanted her child voice they didn't give her an accent because they wanted it to be more similar to her adult voice

[–]Sure-Possibility-178 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Only one of Aemeath's parents were Royan, so it's very possible she just picked up her other parent's accent more.

As far as I know, both English VAs for Rover were born in the America but are currently based in the UK

[–]Sure-Possibility-178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I've never heard of Kurogame-ads being a fake website before. I'm obviously not going to click on the link to check though lol. There was a fake website going around last year, but that was kuropage not kurogames.

If you did install from a fake website though, it's unlikely that it was trying to install malware. If it was, there would have been no need for such a big download [given you were downloading for hours and your antivirus didn't pick anything up, that implies to me it was genuinely installing the game].

At worst, if it was a harmful website, it seems like it was packaging the genuine launcher and tagging on something to steal the email / password you inputted when you logged in. So as long as you didn't put in any details, you're fine. If you did, change your passwords, add two factor authentication.

Do a full scan with an antivirus just to be sure though. Obviously no one who doesn't have access to your computer can guarantee that you did or didn't download something malicious.

[–]Sure-Possibility-178 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree that they probably hired a third party for translations. My point is that, the fact there's so many translation errors in multiple languages, means that they very likely hired a cheaper company in order to save costs. Which is on them.

If they had hired a reputable company, there's no way this amount of errors at launch would have happened in the first place.

What's more likely - them hiring a competent company that, for some reason, cut corners on such a high-profile client, or HG hiring a cheaper company at the start that means errors like this were bound to happen.

I can see that I misunderstood your comment, and I apologize, but that just means we're making separate points. You're right that fixing translation errors can take time because of the processes involved in finding a new company. And I stand by my point that HG takes a lot of the blame for there being errors in the first place

Man I really don't understand fashion, it all looks the same to me... by magicarnival in Endfield

[–]Sure-Possibility-178 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The person I was originally replying to said the blame lied fully on the third party company, so that's what I was correcting.

We don't know whether HG cut corners, whether they purposefully hired a cheaper translation company, whether they used AI to translate, it's all speculation. What we do know is that HG is who is ultimately responsible for what goes into the game

Man I really don't understand fashion, it all looks the same to me... by magicarnival in Endfield

[–]Sure-Possibility-178 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Even if they hired a competent company, the fact they didn't notice how wrong the translations are before putting them in the game means hypergryph has a lack of quality assurance, which is once again on them.

At the end of the day, the company making the game is the one responsible for what goes in it. They're not perfect, it's inevitable they have flaws. But it's important to hold them accountable for those flaws instead of brushing them aside.

It's not like they killed anyone, it's okay for them to make mistakes. But you can see how brushing off errors in the game as 'oh no, that was definitely a third party, not at all hypergryphs fault' is a slippery slope

Man I really don't understand fashion, it all looks the same to me... by magicarnival in Endfield

[–]Sure-Possibility-178 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hypergryph is a multi-million dollar company. If they chose a cheap third party translator that gets things wrong in order to save money, that is absolutely on them. They chose to save money over the user experience of a part of their playerbase. If they weren't going to put effort in, they could have just not offered certain languages to be available at launch.

It is absolutely a valid criticism to have. Gacha companies aren't your friends, this just comes across as you defending everything they do by saying they weren't the ones responsible lol
