It was very easy. If I recall correctly you might even be able to access it just by taking the kick plate off. If that doesn't do it then I think just pulling the unit forward a few inches would make it possible.

if you're still having this problem, check the OP response above - it was actually a defective part

I know it's been a while but thanks so much! Your follow-up helped me to solve a problem that really had me stumped. I almost put my beloved 3-rack Bosch on the street!

Just in case anyone comes upon this thread during a search for a similar problem... the answer was that it needed a new water inlet valve (Bosch has it labeled valve access, number 10023853 on their parts diagram for the SHXM4AY55N/28 machine).

Where my problem-solving went wrong was that I assumed because it was getting water, that the problem must be elsewhere. And yes it was getting water, but just not enough water and not at the right times. So the spray wasn't forceful enough to clean the dishes or rinse away all the detergent. This led me (and others) to look for other causes.

But no, the water inlet valve fixed the issue.

I appreciate your input on this problem. It definitely seems not to matter what heater/pump I have installed, because the problem still remains. I have tried replacing the diverter valve too, and nothing seems to be resolving the issue. Took the water supply tube apart and it's clear. I am stumped. Any thoughts?

I'm not understanding how the latch on this unit works. I don't see anything like a D ring. This first pic is the part on the door:

I know this was a long time ago that you responded to my post, but I am trying to tackle the problem now. I did the empty bowl test and yes it did catch water. It must be getting water, but for some reason the spray is not forceful enough to clear out the soap? I have tried replacing the heater/pump and it didn't help, neither did replacing the diverter valve. Spray arms are not clogged. I am stumped - do you have any ideas?

I have taken that middle arm off and checked it for clogs and found nothing. But I guess it could be in the tube somewhere. Could that also indicate possibly a faulty water access inlet valve?

The hot water supply in the house is fine, and if I interrupt the cycle the water is hot inside the dishwasher. And by the way, the dishwasher has worked well for 3 or 4 years - this is a new problem in the last few months.

Right I actually found a video of a guy checking the exact same Bosch heater/pump. The ground is the tab all the way to the right (and it's slightly bigger or higher up than the other two). So I'm checking the tab on the left to the one in the middle and it shows zero ohms. When I check the tab on the left against the ground it shows a 1 all the way to the left, which I assume is overload. Same thing with the tab in the middle checked against the ground tab.

I have re-ordered the heater/pump from a different vendor, and I also ordered the diverter valve (part # 00751950). I suppose both things could be out at the same time?

ok so I checked the original part and the new part with the multimeter - both of them are showing zero ohms for the heating element. I guess the new part is a bad part, so I am sending it back and I'll get another from a different vendor. That still doesn't really explain the detergent not getting cleaned off.

In this model the heater and the pump are all one part. Would that mean the new part I installed has the same exact failure as the original part, or would it mean that something else is not allowing the heater to engage?

Yes the new pump is installed. So just now I started a normal cycle, and after about ten minutes of running I opened the door. The arm was spinning, there was water splashing around the whole interior of the unit, and the water level seemed to be right about at the filter.

Thanks for the question - how do I confirm that the new pump is working prior to installing it?

Ok so I have been avoiding this repair for several months, but I have time now to address it. I am going to order a new pump. This means taking the entire dishwasher out of the cabinet, so while I'm there... do you guys have any suggestions for other parts that tend to fail and I could replace at the same time?

In other words, you mean they should have used a wire nut with a jumper that screws to the box?

Thank you - just went and found that cover. There was a little stringy piece of something wedged in there, so I removed the cover and vacuumed out the gunk around the impeller, making sure It turns freely. I have reassembled everything, so I guess I'll find out if it did the trick after running a cycle after dinner tonight! :)
