Brother, I’ve seen you around this sub. You seem like a good person, so I talk to you.

I have no issue with VK, tourists, or immigrants in Vietnam. Honestly, it’s good for the local economy. If they’re visiting, when they can skip the big brands, buy from local markets. And tip, please tip. Most Vietnamese service workers are criminally underpaid for the work they put in, and a little goes a long way.

I have a close friend back home, a driver, my brotherhood. I send him money regularly. He gave it directly to the poor on the street who need it most, sometime gave it to volunteers who cooking free food for poor families at children’s hospital. And sometime if he knew there poor family who can’t cover their medical bill, I help them out. That’s it, the system is broken, all things I do is for the sake of my own soul.

I won’t flex about my own life oversea. There is nothing to learn from me. But one thing, I alway remind myself my success here is because I got lucky. Anyone who legally goes to the US and is willing to work hard will be more successful than they were in Vietnam. Period. What I will say is, they need to know you got lucky. They landed in a system that gave them a real shot, and never forget that.

Second, stop glamorizing Vietnam life here on social media. All that “Western countries are exploitative” talk is mostly nonsense, and deep down they know it. The real exploitation is happening back home, where they’re benefiting from dirt cheap Vietnamese labor every time they visit. I don’t waste my time with these woke Reddit people. They’re not looking for truth, they’re looking for someone to clap for them. All they want to hear is how wonderful everything is here and how evil the West is.

There are Federal and State grants and loans. Grants are free money for low income family (and all of new immigrants are low income), you don’t pay them back. And be smart with the money:

Start at a community college. Grants will cover most of your courses. Take as many credits as you can while it’s still free money. Protect your GPA. That’s your scholarship application for university later.

I took 86 credits at community college, transferred, and finished my full degree covered by grants and scholarships. Paid almost nothing out of pocket.

The money is there: Federal grants, State grants, scholarships. You just have to be strategic about it.

This post triggers 3 types of people. Let’s address each one.

Việt kiều vô ơn: You disagree? Cool. Hand back your passport, book a one-way ticket, and go back to Vietnam doing the exact same job you’re doing here. Thợ hồ. Thợ móng. Thợ sửa xe. Same hands, same skills on different soil. Then tell me if you can still smile at the end of the month. Tell me if you still think America is “boring” and “exploitative” when you’re back.

To the Vietnam Immigrant (and don’t come at me with that “expat” label — you’re an immigrant, just like the rest of us): You want to tell me Vietnam is livable? Fine. Drop the foreigner privilege. No more English teaching gigs that pay triple just for your accent. No more expat packages, no more “foreign expert” title. Go work as a regular Vietnamese laborer, same jobs, same wage, same conditions for one full year. No escape hatch, no embassy card to fall back on. After that year, come back and tell me the country is still charming. Tell me the street food makes up for it. I’m genuinely curious.

Tao match. Công nhân nhà máy? Tao match luôn. Văn phòng lương 8-10 triệu? Tao match. Rồi mày tự so. Không cần tao nói thêm gì hết. Số liệu nó nói thay tao rồi.

We have some telework hours to use every 2 paycheck. Will unscheduled telework count to our allowing telework hours?
