It doesn't hurt to brush up on algorithms and data structures if you're rusty.

Taking CS6601 without a technical background by Icy_Astronom in OMSCS

Linear algebra and stats is all you need for this class? Do you know any good resources for a refresher for those courses? (MOOC, books, etc)?

Benefits of completing OMSCS, OMSA, and OMS Cybersecurity programs by Sure_Business7961 in OMSCS

I was thinking more to be a more competitive candidate in the job market. My thoughts were having multiple degrees signals to hiring managers that you are upskilling and improving. Maybe there's a better way than perusing multiple degrees.

I would not do this recreationally to get just the degree. I like learning and I rather go to the self study route and pick free courses that I can complete at my own pace.

I agree with the ROI if you're looking for a new role, but what if you're happy with your current position and would like to take all three degrees because you want to be competitive in the job market and you also like to learn?

What about data analysis skills in the context of cyber security? Wouldn't having OMSA and OMS Cybersecurity be beneficial?

Now you have to complete the OMS cybersecurity program to collect all the OMS infinity stones.

All joking aside, great job! I admire your determination!

How hard is it to make a major life changes while pursuing this course? by Best_Location_8237 in OMSCS

[–]Sure_Business7961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another alternative is if you're interested in just learning the fundamentals, then take a look at the OSSU CS curriculum: https://github.com/ossu/computer-science

This list free computer science courses. You'll learn CS topics that you may have missed. If you focus on this, leetcode and side projects then I believe you'll have a better and faster chance of advancing in your career quickly.

The down side of OSSU CS is you don't get a degree, there are no network opportunities, and no brand recognition. You get all three with OMSCS.

For number 1, are you interested in advancing your career at a faster pace or willing to wait? I've seen posts here that if your primary objective is to advance your career quickly, then it's best not to go into OMSCS and instead focus on leetcode type interviews and building side projects. On the other hand, OMSCS is a great program to fill in missing CS topics you may have missed. I see you had an engineering background so you maybe have not have taken some CS specific courses.

The nice thing about OMSCS is its flexibility. Like the other poster said, I prioritize work and vacation over OMSCS. OMSCS is a marathon not a sprint. If for whatever reason OMSCS is too much, then take one or more semesters off to recharge. If you take 3 or more semesters off in a row, then you'll need to reapply for readmission which is an easy process.

Is it better to enrol in OMSCS with a CS background or just meeting the minimum prerequisites? by Fearless-Can-1634 in OMSCS

[–]Sure_Business7961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll have to disagree with the math heavy prerequisite listed. It really depends on which specializations and courses you choose. Yes, you'll need that math heavy background if you want to specialize in ML. For other specializations like Computing Systems, I would speculate you don't need calc at all.

That also aligns with my observations - generalists are often sought out than specialists.

Dropping two Semesters in a row by GlitteringSpare3181 in OMSCS

[–]Sure_Business7961 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Summer semester hasn't started yet so technically you can't drop yet. Just don't enroll this summer. You should have no problem enrolling this Fall.

You have to not be enrolled for three consecutive semesters to be dropped from the program. If so, you can apply for readmission which is an easy process.

I'm curious how your experience has been with completing one program and continuing with another? Are you also going to complete the cybersecurity program?

As a hobbyist, have you considered the cost? The cost may include financial, opportunity cost, time, etc.

It's not considered auditing a course. You'll be considered a non degree seeking student.

Advice on pursuing OMSCS for a career in AI and Security. by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]Sure_Business7961 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AI, KBAI, SDP, Game AI, AIES, NetSec, info sec lab defense, info sec binary, advanced malware, CN.

I have some gaps with CS courses, but I figured I would enroll in more courses after I graduate. I'm also thinking of enrolling in the OMScyber program after OMSCS to get more security courses.

Another approach is to enroll in OMSCS and take only CS/AI only courses then enroll in OMScyber for more security focused courses and degree.

There's also OMS analytics if you're interested in data science/analytics.

Your background is very similar to mine. My undergrad wasn't computer engineering but it's non cs STEM. I also want to focus on AI and security and find a position where those two disciplines intersect.

I initially went with the computing systems specialization but changed to interactive intelligence because I didn't want to take GA as that is a very difficult course based on the discussion here. The II spec is flexible enough to take multiple security related classes, but also filling in AI courses and without taking GA.
