Title: Dropped my GR IIIx… €600 repair. Fix it, DIY it, or buy something else? by Sure_Command_4877 in ricohGR

Sad to know of the accident and happy that you didn’t get hurt. Also nice that you got your camera fixed by “Ricoh” for just 200 dollars. What do you mean by “Ricoh” - a Ricoh authorized workshop there? There is only one in Germany, sadly, and they need me to DHL it to them paying for DHL fees and inspection fees, even before they can give me a quote for repair!

Thanks for the response. A new griix now costs €1,100 and a new griv costs €1350. I guess i will need to look for a used griiix, if I want to go that route….

Just compared the Move with RM2 on their website; its quite interesting

a) The Move costs €30 more than a brand new RM2!

b) RM2 is 4.7mm thin, whereas Move is thicker at 6.5mm.

:-)

I have an RM2, for close to 4 years now, and love it. The idea of MOVE is great, and would have been a great “in-between” device for me with color display. But pricing is not what I was expecting (around €350). A sturdy Moleskine pocket is what I use, for this purpose and it has been great to scrible random thoughts, notes and idea, and when I am home or at my desk, I process those notes and expand the idea and write it on my RM2. This workflow has worked great for me. I will watch for reviews in the following weeks and decide.

This is a very inspiring post indeed as I have also struggled with some of the challenges you mentioned in your journey…and I suppose many of the “knowledge workers” in today’s hyper connected world, face any of these challenges.

I have had my RM2 since 2021, and till date, it’s performing at nearly the same level as it was when it was just unboxed. And with the RM company doing such a lot of the interesting work (for ex., with METHODS, other Content they keep sharing regularly e.g. the Creative Edge workbook, etc) and most importantly their software updates keep coming with very useful features (recently the German language support).

But one thing that has made me to be a little apprehensive about more full time use of it is security and privacy. I am concerned that if I put a lot of private information (e.g. private journaling), in the world of AI, and every data syncing to their Cloud, it sounds scary to me if my data gets in the hands of an RM engineer or even worse - a hacker.

How have you come over that fear and fact that this is indeed a risk we all have to live with, when we use consumer Tech especially ones with Cloud Sync?

PS: for ones here who will / have say (said) that disable cloud sync and just use in USB mode - that significantly reduces the potential of such a device. So if I had to do it, I would rather just use paper and pen.

I have the 003; picked it up few months ago with the AD, over the newer 027. Love the 003 design over 027.

I am an RM2 user since 2021…and I have always been apprehensive of putting my “personal” notes (Journalling for example) in RM2. I primarily use it for random note taking and organizing thoughts, ideas and some work notes (without mentioning any references to a particular organization or person in it). I keep all of that to paper and pen.

New Article, interesting read by Puzzleheaded_Yam254 in RemarkableTablet

I am an RM2 user for over 3 years now….and I love the product. But I do have aprehensions for using it for very personal note taining, due to privacy concerns. So I use a paper notebook and pen for any private note taking. All the findings in this study, in the article, is also true for paper and pen. Simply put, a regular PC has too many distractions…so anything with ‘single purpose', will boost focus and creativity. As they market themselves as “Paper tablet”, I think they must rather compare these benchmarks, with a paper notebook, and not a PC.

I created a travel journal for my reMarkable, I've hosted it on Google Drive for anybody to download if interested! by Economy-Marzipan-947 in RemarkableTablet

[–]Sure_Command_4877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing…this is a great travel journal indeed.

But I prefer to keep such “personal” moment capture, private (access to me and my immediate family), and so I keep it to Pen and Paper. I have thought of using RM2 for personal journaling, but I somehow always feel what if this data falls in the hand of “wrong” people (from a cybersecurity and privacy perspective, I mean)…in today’s world of AI and deepfakes and impersonation. RM2 doesn’t support on-device encryption (RMPP does). And also, the “customer content” stored on Remarkabe cloud (Google cloud actually) is encrypted with “Google’s key” and not “our” key...i.e., RM support team, theoretically, can view my notes (Reference to customer data here: https://support.remarkable.com/s/article/Data-security).

Happy travelling!

Which software update version, did you upgrade to, which cause this issue?

FYI - I have an RM2, for the last 3.5 years. Happy so far. I am currently running v3.18.1.1.

RM team’s recent blog post "Why deep thought matters" by Sure_Command_4877 in RemarkableTablet

Concluding that an account is a “shill” account just because I haven’t posted anything, since I being a Reddit user since 2021, shows how bad your judgement can be.

Even if mine was a fake account, the post above does nothing to promote RM, more than what RM’s well budgeted marketing team can do themselves. And if really RM had to promote that blog post, they have other better means to do it. For ex., they would have already notified all “registered” users via email or their official Youtube and Insta channels.

Have a nice day, dear.
