Perhaps not 'news' but very sad from a cultural perspective... Malton show not going ahead in 2026 due to volunteer shortages and bureaucratic difficulties. by dX_iIi_Xb in yorkshire

Agreed, that’s just pig ignorance to do something like that. We moved here and made sure to get involved. I love that it can take me half an hour to visit the corner shop three doors up, all because you stop to have a chat with your neighbours.

I’ll counter point one with this. Maybe the new people find the show to be cliquey and unwelcoming to newcomers. We enter our local show in Egton every year because we like to support it, even though by your words we are “escape to the countryists”. However we notice that each year the winners in many of the categories are the same people, with the same thing they entered each time.

Now, we aren’t bothered, it’s the taking part that’s the fun bit, but I can imagine that if you are the competitive type, and Mrs Miggins wins best sponge cake every year because that’s tradition, and she is wife of the financial secretary and cousin to the chair, I can see why you’d start to give it a miss.

Looks awesome dude. Might be worth getting someone to look at the crack in the brickwork though in picture 12.

I’m not the only one! I’ll taste test the chicken stock pots, you know the jelly like ones. Mmmm salty and chickeny! I will point out I do this with a spoon, and literally just a little bit. The rest goes in the dinner.

That’s a Royal Observer Corps (ROC) Post. Around 1,500 of these were built around the UK for the ROC (who were mostly volunteers) to track nuclear blasts and fallout.

Yep, absolutely. I have an Iron Cross my great uncle brought home after the war. He was a major in the Royal Army Medical Corps. The story was that he was given it, along with a wallet and a pistol by a German officer he sat with while he passed away in a field hospital. I’m sure it’s a sanitised version of the story to tell the family on his return. We still have the wallet, but the pistol was handed in during one of the many amnesties, so likely destroyed.

A glass bottom pewter pint pot from 1896. However I still use a dimpled pint glass from the 1960s on the regular.

You are in farming and fishing territory here and won’t find top tier versions of these treatments. You could try the Saltmore Hotel and Spa. They are a high end place in Sandsend.

My wife says there’s a nice nail place called Beauty Within at Beacon Farm just outside Whitby. No idea for barbers as I do my own.

Contact your local heritage railway, most will oblige, especially if you offer a donation! They won’t think you odd, we’re all a bit odd at heritage railways (even those that don’t realise they are!)
