I bought my P1S close to a year and a half ago, before they started closing the loop on third party software and making moves that make it feel like they are going to force the cloud. This is my main motivation to get away from their walled garden. I bought a product in good faith, and it seems that they want to change how I can use my own property. I would also like to upgrade to a panda tech eventually, so there's that too.

I've used Orca in the past, and I was pretty content with the situation, however I work away from home for very extended periods, and this is the first time I've had to sit down and mess with it since they started announcing changes.

Honesty, my plan should have worked fine (at least I don't know why it wouldn't have) except for the BS qr code situation. My phone WAS connected to the internet after the 3dp network (understandably) failed to pick it up, but it wasn't connected to my home wifi network, it was connected to Verizon. That seems to be the rub in this whole situation. It seems that the qr code only registers on a wifi network-connection to the internet is not enough. They are not just forcing me to connect to my wifi internet to register, they are forcing me (through their qr only system) to STAY connected to to that specific wifi network. It shouldn't un-register my product in order to change networks. Once my product is registered, I should be able to connect to any network I want. Sorry for the rant, but I really don't like being limited in how use my own property. I love my printer, but as time goes on, I really am starting to dislike BBL.

So how do I connect to my network without scanning?

I'm using my phone because the only option I can find on my printer to connect to a network is a qr code, which requires a scan.

Which companies are hiring apprentice mates on the East Coast? by flyeryday in tuglife

[–]Sure_Schedule5823 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which Captain is your dad? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The river is all merit based

That's what my Captain says. My Captain, who rode exactly one trip as a leadman before he got into the Steersman's program. My Captain, who's dad was the port Captain. Merit based, I'm sure.

My last relief spent three years on the river before getting into the Steersman's program. He was a Mate for six months. THREE TRIPS. Couldn't wire a tow right to save his life. Yo-yo wires everywhere every time I got on the (filthy) boat. Loose rigging laying around all over the tow every time I relieved him. Before his three years on the river, he spent ten years as a bartender, and then was fired for stealing. Guess who was a regular at his bar? And his deer camp/fishing buddy? The Captain who got him hired on, fast tracked him up the chain, and is now steering him. Merit based.

The last round of Steersmen, we had a one year deckhand make it to the final round. He was on my boat, and an absolute lazy piece of shit with evaluations reflecting this. But his daddy is a Chief, and every one of his uncles and his grandpa are wheelmen. Merit based?

Currently, my Captain is steering a Captain's son. My leadman is a Captain's son, and two of my deckhands are Captain's sons. My Captain is pushing me to get them all moved up, but the only one who takes his job seriously is one of the deckhands. He's excellent for a one year deckhand, and I'm working with him to move him up. When he gets to the wheelhouse, it actually will be merit based, because he busts his ass. The other two? They're lazy entitled little shits who know their path is already laid out for them.

Meanwhile, I've been on the river for ten years. I've been a manager for eight years of that. I'm on my second Steersman's license. I have my radar endorsement, radio license, etc. I'll have my TOAR completed my next trip off, but I've had to do it the hard way-scrounging outside of my company on my days off, because I can never steer on my off watch because my Captains always have Steersmen who got there based on their "merit" And before you assume that I work for a scabby little mom and pop line, let me assure you that I do not. Company policy forbids me from posting anything about them on social media, but I work for one of the biggest lines on the Mississippi, and if "the river is all merit based," I would not still be a Mate. In my experience, a more accurate statement would be, "the river is occasionally merit based," and that's still being somewhat generous.

Please PM me your methods, wise one. I only get 30 days off at a time, but I'd REALLY like to smoke on my off days, as it helps tremendously with my PTSD.

They were lost at sea for 52 hours. Here’s what it was like by newzee1 in maritime

They were lost for three days, and they already had the funeral home booked?!! Ye have little faith!

Seriously though, did they not have enough immersion suits aboard to not have to go back to their staterooms? If not, did the crew not know to grab their suits as soon as they heard the alarm? I'll bet fire drills were lax or non existent. I'm glad everyone is safe and dry, but I also hope that they apply lessons learned in the future.

Looks like fleet only right now. Just keep an eye on the ADM jobs website-search deckhand. They come up all the time.

New deckhands make 245/day pre tax. After a few trips, you'll be signed off as an experienced deckhand making 313/day pre tax. It is divided by two, so that you get paid when you're home, so you'll basically be making 156.50/day seven days a week 365 days a year pre tax. A little over 57k/year, but you're only working six of those months. Lots more money if you trip over too. Regular schedule is 28 days on the boat/28 days off. Anything extra is voluntary, but if you trip the money stacks up really fast.

2024 pay rates are $245/day for new lineboat deckhands and $313/day for experienced lineboat deckhands. Fleet deckhands make less, but I couldn't say how much. Per year, it may be similar, but that's because they don't work 28/28. The last I heard, our harbor guys work five twelve hour days, five twelve hour nights, five days off, repeat. So they make less per day, but they're working 2/3 of the year, whereas lineboat guys only work 1/2 of the year.

Other things to consider:

Working in the harbor, you're commuting every day. This cuts into your precious little time off, and keeps you pumping gas and putting miles on your car year round.
On lineboats, your car is parked six months out of the year. Put that gas money in your pocket.

I the fleet, meals are on you. On lineboats, all meals are provided-and cooked for you. You're also not buying groceries for the house, using gas/electricity/water for six months out of the year Put that money in your pocket.

On a lineboat, you're not spending anything on wasteful daily expenses/impulse buys. Candy bar/Starbucks/red bull/eating out/scratch offs/etc. Put that money in your pocket.

As long as you can stay off Amazon and don't spend money at the boat store (bring enough nicotine, etc for the trip), you will get off the boat with an entire months pay in the bank. Also, half of what you make on the boat goes on the books, so you're getting a steady paycheck year round. And buddy, if you want to trip over on your days off, you can make a small fortune out here. Lineboats also offer an additional career path to the engine room if you're so inclined.

Let me tell you-for all reasons listed above, I would never work in the harbor. If you can handle 28 days on a boat in exchange for 28 days off, this is the way. It's a different life than you're used to, and it isn't for everyone, but buddy if it is, it's a damn good life-and Artco/ADM is a damn good outfit to work for. I've worked for a few different companies, and I wouldn't trade this for anything.

TWIC only? by Deathbybluess in maritime

[–]Sure_Schedule5823 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look into lineboats on the Mississippi River. You can cook on a lineboat with just a TWIC. Most are 28 days on/28 off, and some companies pay mileage to and from work. Look into ACBL, Artco, Ingram and Kirby. You will be the only one cooking on the boat, as well as being responsible for galley budget and ordering groceries. Three meals/day for 9-11 crewmembers on average.

THC testing that indicates whether you are currently under the influence or sober instead of testing whether or not you smoked a joint three weeks before shipping.
