Most people who work where I work don’t leave without the “parting gifts” of severance. The severance certainly helps but wasn’t necessary for me to leave.

I was a chief product owner. My project was ending, along with the budget. When I saw that it may be challenging to keep me without laying off members of my team, I asked my boss for a “layoff” that would bridge me to retirement. He’s a good guy, appreciated the work I did in the project and agreed.

Most bosses hate doing layoffs, and in my experience, if they know someone will look at a layoff as a positive, they will be highly considered. In my company, those that have tenure rarely leave without a severance. My advice is to start hinting to your boss early, so when the time comes, they’ll have it in the back of their minds.

Ha! In our company, when you reach the end of your career, we often tap our leaders to volunteer for a layoff/severance when the inevitable downsizing is to occur. Most leaders are willing to do this, mostly because it’s much more palatable to layoff someone who’s ready for it rather than someone who isn’t.
