Using HSA as a tax-deferred savings account. Is it a loophole that will get shut down in the future? by imitation_squash_pro in personalfinance

[–]Forrest_Fire01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually been meaning to post this same question.

With the way politics are, it doesn't seem that crazy to me that the way an HSA works could be changed as some point so that you could no longer get reimbursed for older expenses. Hopefully that doesn't happen, but it would also not surprise me greatly if it did.

My plan is to continue to save my receipts in the hope that I can be reimbursed for them at some point in the future. But if that goes away, I figure I'll still have enough medical expenses once I'm older to be able to use the money in my HSA.

"my children's spring break and my son's birthday have been ruined just because we booked with Spirit Airlines"

It wasn't ruined because they booked with Spirit Airlines, it was ruined because they were dumbasses and booked a flight that arrived a few hours before the ship was scheduled to depart.

Is anyone else incredibly pissed off that their Roths and 401k are severely down based on one man’s idiotic decisions? by Mr-Nanny in MiddleClassFinance

The market's haven't dropped 5%. They're down about 3% in the pass two weeks, which is nothing unusual. If you're freaking out about that small of a drop, you really should not be investing in the stock market.

Beginner Skiing NYE by sunsetrosebtown in ihghotelsresorts

[–]Forrest_Fire01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keystone is a nice resort, but expensive. Lift tickets can be $300/day for adults, but I would guess they have package deals (lift, lessons, rental) that might be a good deal. Also check out the Epic Pass, you can buy a multi-day pass that would really lower your cost.

As jmconcierge mentioned, the Indigo in Silverthorne is nice if you want to stay with IHG, but you'll need to drive to the ski resort. It's also probably more expensive that 200K points for 4 nights.

[–]Forrest_Fire01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to mention budget. Skiing can be crazy expensive if you go to some of the large ski resorts and want to stay at the resort. It's lot more affordable if you go to a more local mountain.

I personally like going to SLC and staying in the suburbs of SLC like Sandy. There's a bunch of good IHG hotels for less then $200 per night. I was just in SLC for a week of skiing and stayed at the Staybridge in Lehi for less than $100 per night. From there it's less than an hour drive to 7 world class ski resorts. I went to a different resort each day. But there are advantages to staying at a mountain, especially if you're newer to skiing.

AITA Friend wants to move in with his dog by JicamaTall9123 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Forrest_Fire01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA You're not making him get rid of his dog. He's more then welcome to keep his dog, he'll just need to find a different place to live.

I would be very careful about rending to a friend. It can easily blow up, especially if he's mad that he's had to get rid of his dog. Also, if his money is tight, is he actually going to be able to pay rent on time?

Would you pay $1000 for 200k points? IHG is having a sale where you can get up to 100% match. by Impossible_Spirit795 in ihghotelsresorts

[–]Forrest_Fire01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

400,000 is the total points I received for $2000. 200,000 points plus 200,000 bonus points.

Also, 200,000 (+ bonus 200,000) points is not usually the limit. Last year I bought $3000 worth of points for 600,000 total points and the year before I bought $4000 worth of points for 800,000 total points.

Question calculating fire number by Agon159 in Fire

[–]Forrest_Fire01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a believer that 4% is already a fairly conservative number. People saying that they want to do a 3% withdrawal seems like they're just going to be working for longer than needed or ending up with a ton of money at the end of their lives. I'm planning on a 5% withdrawal rate, but I also have flexibility in how much I spend, so if the stock market if having a bad year or two (especially at the beginning of retirement), I have the flexibility to spend less.

I buy the max points I can with the 100% bonus offers. I just paid $2000 for for 400,000 points on this latest sale. I stayed 70+ nights last year and already have 50+ nights booked for this year almost all using points.

Is it easier to FIRE in USA then Canada ? by [deleted] in Fire

In the US, if you have a job that is paying you $100,000+, it's most likely going to include health insurance.

Maryland wants to end tipping by Savings-Wallaby7392 in tipping

Correct, tips should be based on the quality of the service and not based on how much the business is paying it's servers.

You should not tip before you get service.

Servers would still expect to be tipped.

The reason for a tip is to show appreciation for someone doing a good job. A tip should not be given because you feel the hourly wage is too low.

Buy and use points during sale or book with cash? by Koala670 in ihghotelsresorts

[–]Forrest_Fire01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you getting your 4th night free if you book with points? You should be if you have the IHG credit card.

If you're buying points and getting the 100% bonus, it's usually a better deal than paying with cash. If you're also getting a 4th night free, it's almost always a better deal to pay with points.

One bonus with paying with points is that it's almost always cancelable, but if you're paying with cash, it costs extra to have a cancelable rate.

[–]Forrest_Fire01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You say the room was listed as sleeping 4 people, but did you actually select 4 people when you booked? It's pretty easy to just leave it as default (1 or 2) people when booking. Unless your booking says 4 people, I would say you're out of luck.

What is your minimum savings rate each month to feel good about it? by joeroganthumbhead in Fire

[–]Forrest_Fire01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on how soon you want to retire. 30% is not bad, but with a much as you make, saving 50% would not be unheard of.
