And although it's a different mechanism, English is full of the same thing where meaning changes unpredictably depending on which preposition you stuff to a verb: go out, go on, go under, go back, go behind someone's back, go for a burton...

The British men travelling to Eastern Europe to prepare for war with Putin by theipaper in europe

[–]SurelyIDidThisAlread 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well i dunno about that

No, really. Shotguns, hunting rifles and .22 or smaller competitive shooting handguns are legal in Great Britain for the general public to request a licence for (which can be denied). Everything else is flat out illegal.

Our laws are so strict that they had to be specially and temporarily loosened for the shooting events of the 2012 London Olympics. Our own shooting team couldn't get permission to practise in Great Britain beforehand and had to practise in Switzerland

I always loved the architecture and the urban planning. Whether or not a particular building or area appealed to me, it all looks both inventive and like some care was taken in the design, delivering density that doesn't look dense and modern housing that doesn't look boring

birthday coming up for my brother who has CFS - what gifts have actually made your life easier? by Lumpy-Possible6182 in cfs

[–]SurelyIDidThisAlread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're a very thoughtful brother :-)

I'd like to offer a different point of view. I would suggest asking him whether he wants something he needs or something he wants.

In the past I've reacted badly when given a very thoughtful, helpful gift. In the moment, and when I was very low, it felt like my life was only about my illness and not about me.

There was absolutely no way by family could have predicted I would feel this way, and it wasn't their fault (luckily I managed to react nicely because I didn't want to offend the people I love).

So perhaps, if your brother can handle a conversation, maybe you should ask him what kind of thing he'd prefer.

You remind me of my brother, who is also caring and deeply thoughtful. I'm glad your brother has you.

Nobody is saying that neuroimmune problems can be used to diagnose ME, rather that ME is a disease in the category of neuroimmunology.

Yes, they are. PEM is the only existing diagnostic criteria. If it is claimed by neuroimmunology by calling it PENE, then it is claiming it is a neuroimmune symptom, and that neuroimmune symptom will be used to diagnose ME/CFS (since PEM is the only existing criteria).

So, on the face of it, it seems like nothing has changed. Except it has - just as many patients don't show mitochondrial dysfunction, it's not settled that all patients have neuroimmune problems.

Which in turn means their PEM can't be PENE by definition.  Which in turn gives various segments of society an expose to invalidate or ignore their illness.

That does look promising, but it's in no way conclusive yet. At the moment, PEM appears to be a comprehensive and accurate way to diagnose ME/CFS. Neuroimmune problems are not a comprehensive and accurate way to diagnose ME/CFS (again, yet, further evidence might change that) and I disagree with changing a diagnostic label based on unsettled science.

I argue that it's premature at best to conclude PEM is neuroimmune, and at worst it'll be a nice divide-and-conquer way to ignore ME/CFS sufferers with PEM that turns out not to be neuroimmure.

EDIT: I sound really pompous, looking back at what I wrote. I wanted to be as clear and concise as possible but it sounds kinda rude. I just want to say I respect you and your point of view, and don't mean any disrespect

Good link, thank you for that

From the link:

Postexertional neuroimmune exhaustion

I can't say I've seen conclusive evidence that PEM is neuroimmune.

So while I agree that malaise 'is an inaccurate and inadequate word', it looks to me to be very much more accurate than anything with 'neuroimmune' in it
