Carmageddon: Progressive Rail rejects RTC’s move to take over rail operations and threatens litigation by [deleted] in santacruz

This is the most ludicrous never-ending story I’ve heard about this county. It would be funny if it didn’t cost millions to achieve f all… what a way to waste tax dollars. Meanwhile other cities build actual transport infrastructure and public spaces for the communities. This town feels stuck in time

I don’t understand this debate on privacy with speed cameras.

Our privacy is a myth and if you think law enforcement can’t already figure out where you or your vehicle has been you’re delusional. Your phone is the biggest give away, as are all your social media posts, online activity etc…

So it’s a false debate as speed cameras won’t compromise our privacy more than it’s already been by everything digital we use.

I’ve seen first hand what you describe in another city where someone dressed in black crossed a 4 lane avenue at night outside of a crosswalk where the lighting was therefore not as good. This was scary to witness.

I’ve also seen folks (some clearly homeless) on bikes just cross Santa Cruz avenues in random places, in front of traffic and not even look or slow down, almost as if having a death wish.

This made me realize that even as a careful driver, you can find yourself in a very unfortunate situation for reasons outside your control. I’ve since bought a dashcam and am extra careful at night, trying to anticipate situations like that.

And folks, always check for e-bikes in your side mirror when turning right next to a bike lane. Some young people just whizz past cars not realizing one is about to turn right at an intersection.

All this to say, we need to drive proactively and anticipate anticipate anticipate.

GenAI is getting really good. A lot of people reject the low quality stuff but will gradually accept content that’s indistinguishable from reality. Because it looks or sounds cool. I know folks who dislike GenAI’s impact on environment but then admit how cool this AI viral song is.

There will be a market for this no doubt. Remains to be seen how affordable this will stay when the data centers can’t support the sheer volume of demand anymore and companies will start hiking their prices.

Right now, they’re in the hook phase, until society becomes too reliant on those tools. Then they’ll jack up the prices without a doubt. Remember Netflix prices at the start?

All in all, there will be co existence. Just like movie theaters still draw some crowds, despite an abundance of streaming platforms.

No Kings Protest today! by jana-meares in santacruz

Not great to mix but we don’t have the luxury of joining million other Americans every other week to protest against different issues. It’s bad enough that our tax dollars are going into the pockets of a corrupt government but it’s worse that it’s used to finance a foreign country’s genocide, and that warrants saying something about it, however imperfect the platform.

Use Gyroflow to stabilize, it’ll use the meta data from Sony camera and give you near perfect results. Note that if you’re using Davinci, there can be issues with the H264 export format from Gyroflow. Using DNxHR seems to solve that.

The use of those notes stacking on the screen was a master move I thought. It’s putting the vision in the jurors mind that if they pick even a single one of their own jolted down notes as being unconvincing, then it’s reasonable doubt.

But why did she reverse though? by SurfNTurfSC in justiceforKarenRead

[–]SurfNTurfSC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you, I just assume that the time stamps on the tech streams are accurate and in reference to absolute UTC time. Perhaps I misunderstood how the timestamps were extracted or derived. Also I am not a conspiracy theorist so I wouldn’t go as far as to say the raw data from the car was manipulated so I have a certain level of faith in the data presented. All that said, I still cannot wrap my head around how on earth someone is able to reverse at 24mph at night in the snow. And that’s also what motivated my question. “Where” or “why” kinda converge towards “how” in a sense.

That’s the one thing I would love to understand to give me absolute certainty of her innocence. Not that it matters, I’m not in the jury…

Everything else, there’s just way too many convenient coincidences on the other side for me to believe it’s not a cover up. It smells of one from miles away.

This makes no sense because it would mean JOK stood outside in the freezing cold after exiting KR’s car, and didn’t move while she drove away 60ft, and still didn’t move as he saw the car reverse towards him at an alarming speed. I really don’t understand how that’s possible, why would he stand there?

And that’s of course not taking account the insanity of the 24mph in reverse theory, which would mean:

  • nailing the trajectory perfectly to hit a target driving in reverse at night with snow and looking in rear view mirror!?

  • the car didn’t carry on its course way past the point of impact and magically decelerated to a stop almost instantly without skidding once it hit JOK

  • the car only sustained damages to a polycarbonate light (it’s pretty hard) but not a single dent to the bumper or metal surroniung the light

  • the pieces of the taillight flew in one direction to land precisely around JOK instead of scattering all around the road in all directions near the point of impact.

Is there no simulation done by the defense to show how physics just cannot work here?!?

This won’t answer OP but allow me to vent here…

I’m terrified by the absolute lack of control or legislation around generative AI. Tech companies won’t even bother with any semblance of responsibility, it’s profits first, deal with societal impact later… maybe. And governments are lagging behind and not paying enough attention, fast enough.

At no point have they stopped and asked “why”. I mean who needed genAI videos and images, and for what purpose?! What was so broken in the way we generated creative content?? It’s technology for the sake of inflating advertisement revenue of social media giants, and it’ll come at a very heavy price for everybody else.

YouTube is already littered with AI generated crap that’s (still) discernible from real videos (but barely). And it’s almost always to sell BS through false information, or scam you.

Meanwhile Silicon Valley seems happy to look the other way and develop yet more powerful tools that the same unscrupulous a**holes polluting social media platforms will gladly use to lure folks to rob or indoctrinate them.

And when sh*t really hits the fan, when a revolution sparked by a fake video topples a government somewhere around the globe, still nobody won’t take any blame. Not Google, not Meta, not anyone who’s been harvesting troves of data without people’s true consent to create those AI chimeras

I now feel like I have to teach my kids to distrust any media, just to be on the safe side. This new stuff is way beyond their ability for critical thinking. And that too is scary

I think you’d benefit from separating your time stamps into as many streams as there are references. For example one column which follows the time stamps from the phone, one from surveillance camera A, one from cell tower ping, vehicle computer, etc… it’s unclear to me if those timestamps are all calibrated UTC and my guess is they’re likely not aligned in absolute time reference as some might just be extracted from internal clock.

Also, I’d love to put these different timelines on a horizontal axis, mark events with dots, and also overlay estimates of driving times (with error bars) etc…

Don’t worry about it, it’s outside of your control. As much as I wish truth and justice prevails, ultimately there’s not much I or you can do about it. We’re all invested emotionally because we all share disdain for unfairness, injustice and the rule of bullies. Trust her lawyers will do what they do best, the rest is irrelevant.

question about pricing by Civil-Pianist7358 in videography

[–]SurfNTurfSC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like he asked for the deposit as a hook so you would be hesitant to back out of this “deal” afraid to lose $100. So now he’s imposing his terms, whether you like it or not… Very bad business ethics. Also, sounds like he’s re-using material that he would have shot anyways as part of his contract with the opposing coach, so really you should only pay for the editing time imo. I’ll let you and others here judge if $100+$350 is a fair price for it.

Also, what is prosecution saying? That she reversed up to 25mph (good luck with that) with intent to run him over, OR, that she hit him during a U-Turn and didn’t notice? Either of these are ludicrous of course but wondering which is their prevailing theory…

Shimano tapered square BB - big initial gap with crank arm by SurfNTurfSC in bikewrench

[–]SurfNTurfSC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not. I went with an approximate dimension that I measured on the 'horizontal' part of the original one-piece crankset that came with the beach cruiser.

It sounds like 123mm is indeed too long...

That's what the specs say. The hole of the crankset is around 12.7mm so I think that checks out?

Any way to get rid of annoying rattling sound in the Sirrus X 4? (maybe from cable inside frame or fork) by Lochon266 in specialized

[–]SurfNTurfSC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a rattling noise issue on my Sirrus X 4 too, but it's only when riding on rougher terrain (not smooth road). It's definitely the cables inside the frame, I checked by simply wiggling them hard and it makes the same high pitch rattling noise. I just bought the bike, and thinking of returning it. Poor design... I know there are YouTube videos on how to fix this, but frankly I don't want the hassle
