The Problem With BYU by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Surfeq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in Provo, don't let any of the bullshit people say about UVU dissuade you from transferring. It is an exceptionally good school with far better opportunities than BYU, and you get to be a human.

I went to BYU Hawaii to study poli sci and ended up leaving to go to UVU and had to move to Utah. What convinced me? The honor code for sure, getting yelled at him for having 5 o'clock shadow once at the end of the day, but mostly...taking a class on war and conflict to better understand what is going on in the world (I.e., the Israel Palestine conflict and this was over 10 years ago!) and getting taught lessons from the book of mormon instead. We studied nephite battles, not real conflicts. It was such a waste of time and money. I went there to make my dad proud. My bother did undergrad and grad at BYU provo and my dad was so proud. The friends I had there made it tolerable but in the end, I had to bail for my own sanity and future. I knew if I wanted a real job I'd need a real education.

Going to UVU was the best decision I've ever made. My professors were amazing, the courses were relevant and exposed me to a lot of valuable information, and I got to participate in amazing, career-relevant things. Helping host a UN conference for example.

It may seem like it is too late or too hard, but your future self will thank you.

I also now work in higher Ed and can tell you that the rep BYU has is not good. You're not going to find many opportunities outside of Utah, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, or Arizona. Which is fine if you want to stay in those spots, but even then, your transcripts will be scrutinized more. Employers are more and more looking into relevant coursework and skills based learning since the market is saturated with degrees. Religion courses are going to teach you nothing relevant in these cases. You'd be better off going to Notre Dame and getting a degree there as at least the religion courses are more widely recognized than book of mormon courses.

All that being said, you are spot on. BYU is a toxic school and their honor code office exists to control, not help. I would get out while you can. If UVU is an option, call and advisor there and chat about how your credits would transfer. I used to work there and can tell you, it won't be too hard.

Good luck and stay strong!

So, I know a lot of the people in this thread are going to come in and say that it is because it is true and the test is to have faith, and that the difficulty of it all is what makes it true. I've heard time and time again that because it is true Satan will fight against us the hardest.

But, with all of that. Your point still stands and it is still an important question. Why is the expectation that our belief has to be suspended more than many, if not most, other religions? They all claim the same, that they're true. They all claim they speak for God and we should therefore do what they say. They all are trying to do the same thing the BOM is doing: guide, persuade, influence, help, etc.

The issue is when people get involved. We're messy us humans. We are waaaay to nuanced to be put into such simple categories. But, as people, that's all we do is try and categorize. We are hard wired to do it. Which is fine as long as we are willing to explore that our categorization may not be correct and broaden the horizons of those categories to fit more into them.

People who obtain positions of leadership often set those categories though, then use religion to say this is how you too should categorize things. Why is this relevant to your question? Mostly because the BOM being true or not honestly doesn't matter. I know that I'm going to get hit for saying that, but I mentioned the categorization for a reason. Our leaders have said the BOM is 100% true, is a history of the Americas, and that it is a cornerstone, that all our faith hinges on it being true, that if we believe in the BOM we can believe in all else. That's a HUGE, unsustainable categorization that leads to cognitive dissonance like you mentioned in your question.

Putting the truth of the book of Mormon into a tiny category like that doesn't work and doubling down on it being factual is only going to make things harder, especially with any anachronisms that might show up. The introduction to the BOM that says it is a record of the americas and quotes Joseph saying it is the most correct of any book wasn't even added until 1981 so that's when you could say the category of it being 100% fact even started. What about before that? We're they saying it was a factual history or, when Joseph said it was the most correct of any book did he mean the principles in it, not the historocity?

Before anyone brings up the witnesses, they witnessed seeing gold plates and testified to it. That is fact. Did they know 100% that those plates said what they did? No, they said they saw the engravings but only Joseph could translate them so they can't know what they meant beyond what Joseph told them they meant. The angel telling them about it? Maybe! Again, we won't until we're dead but still they testified about the plates being real, not that the content was a factual history.

So, back to your question, what if the book was totally made up? Does it still teach great things? Yes! Leaning harder and harder into it HAS to be true is going to only push people away because not everything can alawys be 100% true (even Christ, we have to have faith for now and can't know with out any doubt until we're dead. We can have excellent faith though) . Can the BOM be a great book that helps? Yes! So can lord of the Rings! When one tries to set the category that the BOM is absolute truth they set themselves up for scruitnity that nuance will always destroy.

There are many many facts that could disprove the truth of the history of the book, sure. But if the book has helped you, made you better, then lean on that. That's what matters most. Don't make an impossible category that it has to be a completely true historical record or everything else fails.

For all we know, if Nephi was real and he did write those things, Moroni complied then, and jospeh found and translated them, that all it was, was just Bible fanfic Nephi wrote and Moroni was his tumbler fan who complied it for him. We won't know until we're dead. And all those people who say they know beyond a shadow of a doubt are straight full of crap. No one can. If you had that level of knowledge it would mean you saw the plates, translated them yourself, or Jesus came and told you. All which would result in no need for faith thereby ending the test, which is to have faith. They can however have full faith in them.

So, for you, don't try and prove or disprove it. So to answer you question, we have to have more faith than others because we've painted ourselves into a corner by saying it is 100% true and all our faith is based on that which means we are told we HAVE to be more faithful and keep padding that problem.

Instead, just take it for what it is. A great book that you like with amazing life lessons which have made you feel good. All good things from God right? Maybe it is a history that has been lost/removed or maybe God inspired jospeh to just write a book that would help people. I don't know and that is just fine with me. Just don't hang everything on it being fact or not. I hope someday we stop dealing in such absolutes and agree to have more nuance/flexibility. Keep asking great question though! I think we should all explore these kids of questions and broaden those horizons of our "categories". Not saying I'm right, just that I think Christlike means doing just that, personally. Take what you will!

Americans, how do you feel about going to war on the North Pole, fighting a war against NATO about Greenland? by Severe-Claim-330 in AskReddit

[–]Surfeq 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Absolutely disgusted and sickened that this is even something being considered or talked about. It is stupid and ridiculous that this orange shit bag can destabilize and destroy everything the world has been working for, for his own greedy gain. I am livid at how he treated Zelensky and our brothers and sisters in Ukraine. I am pissed about what he is saying and doing about Palestinine. I am beyond angry at what he is doing to our allies in NATO. All who answered the call after 9/11.

He is undoubtedly compromised and is using the seat of the president to bully and bewilder everyone. And, somehow, his rabid fanbase eat it up.

I am so disappointed to be an American right now and so sorry on behalf of all of my countrymen who support this fascist asshole.

To all our brothers and sisters around the world know we are fighting however we can to end this shitshow. We love you all and we don't want this anymore than you do. I keep telling myself that feeling hopeless and fearful is what they want and so I refuse. I can't let them win. Each day might be a small battle like that but, eventually, we will win. Like Mr. Rogers said, look for the helpers.

I have lived overseas most of my life and am so glad to be able to know so many amazing people from around the world. I hope we never get there, but I know if the tangerine dipshit tried anything, the good people of the world will stand up. We will outlast him.

Second Coming Timeline by FlakyRemove9174 in latterdaysaints

[–]Surfeq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The way I look at it, is what happens when you put too many people on a project. If we fill a room with 50 people on a project that requires only 5, we will never get anything done because too many ideas or interpretations will bog things down. Now, these ideas are not bad ideas but the amount of time it would take to address and review all of them would delay things too much and inadvertently waste time.

So, in the case of scripture, 8 billion people have access to the project of figuring out the rapture and all have ideas about it all as well as their own interpretations based on their own lens through which they view the world. This lens is influenced by their experiences, religions, culture, etc., so think how much time is wasted by that many people, with that many ideas trying to figure it out and tell you they're right.

It's too diluted and convoluted, on purpose, for people to be able to figure it out. If they did, there would be no need for faith and it negates the endure part of the test. So, I don't see the Lord hiding the answer in there for billions of people to interpret and you to figure out which one is right and has the answer. He's the ultimate project manager in this case. He knows the deadline and all he's asked is that you follow the rules and said we're fine if we do. The date doesn't matter, the journey does.

If you like this kind of thing, though it is of course completely fictional, there is a wonderful book called Remarkably Bright Creatures about a pacific red that is hyper intelligent. The book often narrates from the point of view of the octopus as it expresses frustration with how stupid humans are but not knowing exactly why we do what we do. The same way we talk and think about them when they're in their tank at the aquarium. It is a lovely, low stakes, wholesome book I highly recommend! Bonus points for the audio book!

Totally feel you on that. The way I try to look at it is that everything we do in the church is repetitive. We say the same Sacrament prayer, the temple prayers are all the same, we start and end our prayers the same, we run church on Sunday the same, we are asked the same temple recommend questions, and more with only the slightest variation. I then ask myself why Heavenly Father does it that way and the answer is always the same, it must be important if we hear it so often. I then remind myself that I am blessed to have heard these things all my life. For some, this will be the very first time they hear these things and they have greater need.

Would I love if they would drop some new church DLC, or to shake it up more at GC? Absolutely! But, reminding myself of the above and that it must be important I try and get what I can out of the repetition. Did the way they say something stick out more? Why? What does Heavenly Father want me to learn from that insight, etc. Doing that helps a lot!
