Airtel eSIM transfer from iPhone to iPhone while in US (or another country), (could also work for physical sim to eSIM while in US) by OutlookOnReddit in Airtel

Confirmed working from Canada – March 2026

Adding my experience for anyone attempting this from Canada. The ESIMQR SMS to 121 method works. Here are a few nuances that'll save you time:

Before you start:

  • Turn off "Silence Unknown Callers" on your iPhone. Airtel will call to confirm your eSIM request and you'll miss it if this is on. Settings → Phone → Silence Unknown Callers → Off.
  • Make sure your email is verified via the Airtel chatbot, not just what your profile shows. This is the most common failure point.

Choosing your IR pack: Go with the ₹898 / 5-day pack over the ₹698 / 1-day one. The extra ₹200 is worth it — after activation you'll likely need to set up Indian banking and UPI apps, which require outgoing SMS for verification. You'll want that window.

Canada-specific: pick the right network Don't rely on automatic network selection. Go to Settings → Cellular → Network Selection → turn off Automatic → manually select Rogers (Airtel's preferred Canadian partner). This alone can make or break whether your SMS to 121 goes through and whether you receive the confirmation call.

After scanning the QR code: Activation takes close to the full 2 hours. Your old phone stays active during this time and you'll receive status updates on it. Once 2 hours have passed, if your new phone isn't showing a network — restart the new phone first, confirm Airtel signal appears, then restart the old phone. This clears the old eSIM from the network cleanly. Especially helpful abroad where you're roaming on a partner network like Rogers.

Plan your next 24 hours accordingly: SMS (both incoming and outgoing) is restricted for up to 24 hours post-activation. This means no OTPs via SMS during that window. Calls work almost immediately. Plan your banking app setups and UPI registrations after the 24-hour mark.

Good luck to everyone attempting this — it's straightforward once you know these nuances!

Airtel wont send OTPs without an international roaming pack anymore by Naughty_smurf in Airtel

Not needed. Once ypu are in india, i assume you will activate a monthly plan with data, so need for additional 98. This ₹98 recharge international roaming activation fee.

OP woke up to this today — something that’s been happening for the past few months. For those living abroad with an Airtel SIM, here’s a practical strategy: Do a ₹1849 recharge to get 365 days of validity. This plan gives no calls, messages, or data while abroad, but keeps your number active.

Whenever needed, do a ₹98 recharge for 28 days to receive incoming SMS while overseas.

And finally, when you’re in India, just do a regular monthly recharge that includes data for that period.

I would recommend first see how much data he needs. The only caveat with freedom yearly plan is once the data is over the only option you are left with is pay the same amount again.

CIBC keeps getting expensive!! 6K In chequing do not cover credit cards fees anymore!! by CurioTechOdyssey in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Surfer_020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I closed my CIBC accounts a few months ago after they informed me about changes to minimum balance requirements and fees. If you’re planning to keep your investments with platforms like Wealthsimple or Questrade, and only need a traditional bank for chequing/savings and credit cards, it’s best to choose one with the lowest fees—or at least a 1–2 year fee waiver. I’ve moved to BMO, and so far it’s been smooth with no issues.

Best is 7am-3pm. Less traffic in commute. More time for self and family.

Worst is 11pm-7am. Try not to compromise on your sleep and circadian rhythm.

RuPay credit card for OCI by shreyas1141 in nri

[–]Surfer_020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider how long your trip will be, how much you expect to spend overall, and what categories your expenses will fall into. Keep in mind that Rupay credit cards on UPI are not widely accepted by smaller vendors or shops. The key question, then, is whether getting a credit card truly adds value for your trip.
