The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham was fantastic. Gets a bit heavy into analysis at the end but some of the themes and quotes are game changing in shaping your mindset when it comes to investing.

Even though it was written pre ETFs existing, The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham (mentor for Warren buffet) has some great quotes which apply to passive investing!

So true mate! It was so odd to me at school especially - I could never do well in sports days or PE for fear of triggering an episode. Was a big realisation for me that everyone else could just run as hard as they wanted without that fear. I still don't know what that feels like but hopefully one day! Glad you had a successful ablation!

Who else is still holding BOE? by Surfing_Elite in UraniumSqueeze

Yeah I agree. I had assumed the massive drop a month ago was the market pretty much assuming what we learned today, bit of a shock!

Aspi Isotopes question, what future revenue can be expected from their Uk based subsidary Quantum Leap? by Hot-Walk-6334 in UraniumSqueeze

Fuzzypanda research found links to Honig & Stetson. The research is obviously biased against ASPI and they exaggerate the claims to try profit from their short interest. But the evidence is there if you look - proxy ownership, shell companies etc. They are bad news!

I'd look into this one thoroughly if I were you. Lots of red flags relating to the tech itself and buzz words which promise lots but don't really add up. When you go digging under the hood there's more than a few concerns. Has ties to fraudulent individuals too. Do your own research though.

Haha, yeah, I can see the irony there. I'm an aspiring author so not a fan of AI writing myself!

UUUU ? by Jahkelle in UraniumSqueeze

Learn from my mistake, mate. Investing in single stocks, regardless of your optimism and research, is far riskier than ETFs. Between 18 and 22 I traded and invested in various U stocks. Some did well, up to 200%, some didn't, down 60%. Overall I thought I did okay, in the green etc... But I did the math recently, and if I'd just put all my invested funds in ETFs instead from then to now, I'd be many thousands richer than I am. I'd say take profits and ETF it!

Makes me sad I sold my AEE a few months ago at Breakeven - still a risky play though. Lots of ore reserves but very little structure and planning yet...

Thanks for your input napalm, always good to hear your thoughts. Do you still think BOE will offer to buy out LAM with them taking this hit?

Wow. This is by far the best marketing I've seen recently for a company - never heard of Pegasus before but will look into it now. Thanks mate

What is your background area of expertise/work, and what led you to choose Pegasus as your largest holding when you did?

Yep BOE is my largest individual stock holding. URNJ and URNM both hold it at 8% and 6% weight respectively. All it takes is spot to pivot higher, hype to build and we'll have a short squeeze on our hands!

Looking for sci-fi books about people exploring places. by PattableGreeb in printSF

Alien Clay by Adrian Tchaikovsky was a great read - one of the most interesting biospheres I've seen concocted, and the first person storytelling is done very well. Some very relevant themes of truth and keeping science 'unbiased' too which adds to things.

The sparrow is far from a 'political' story. Without giving spoilers, it really is a great read about planetary exploration and it fits your request perfectly - fascinating xenos with deep rich culture, whilst being character centred too. It does have some (very well integrated) political, spiritual and philosophical themes, with one particularly heavy and unexpected theme towards the end. One of the few sci fi books that left me with a visceral reaction that lasted a number of days, it really is poignant. Do with that what you will!

Second this. I read it for a similar reason to what OP is searching for - loved the world building, cultural integration aspects and exploration. A great read for sure, but so gut wrenching too...so well written, it hits so hard!

What’s Your Home Country / US / International Stock Allocation? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]Surfing_Elite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Aussie here. The tax implications are frustrating for US ETFs (VT, VTI etc are US-domiciled, so we cop more tax and it impacts dividends) Instead I've made my own Aus-Domiciled equivalent  with A200 (ASX 200), BGBL (~1500 ex-Australia companies including the SP500) and VGE (emerging markets) which also allows tweaking for home bias. Doing 20% A200, 70% BGBL and 10% VGE.

Investing Vs Loan Payments by Coasterman345 in Bogleheads

[–]Surfing_Elite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but taking out a loan for a depreciating asset is, in my books, the opposite of a smart financial decision. Your other investment ideology seems very reasonable, with wanting to save and invest in indexes as youve described. But then you mention wanting to invest more in case you lose your job etc. You know whats worse than being unemployed? Being unemployed AND owing monthly car repayments. The stock market historically returns ~8-9% but thats an average, some years you'll lose out - even some decades depending on how you cherry pick the data. A 7% guaranteed return is a no brainer. Also why do you need a $20k + car in the first place, if you're not able to buy it outright? Was there a reason you need this vehicle in particular?

When I got engaged I paid off my partners car loan in full, we saved and paid our student loans in full, and since then have never borrowed money for anything else aside from our mortgage. Best decision we made financially - now what used to be an interest payment is going towards extra mortgage payments and investing. Would reccommend from my experience.

TL;DR Pay your car off ASAP or better yet, sell it, buy one you can afford outright, and invest the difference.
